I'm guessing that the battery inside the torch was D.O.A -probably pressed in transit, and from what I can see there is no way to replace it when it eventually runs out which is a bit sad (again I'm not bitching, I understand the cost of producing a torch with replaceable batts would have been unfeasible -but it is such a cool looking gadget).

Additionally, on a positive note the book itself is fucking stunning. Design, format, layout, colour, art. It really is a beautiful thing. Obviously I'm waiting until my torch arrives to read it and only flicked through briefly, but I think it is safe to say D'Israeli was on fire when he put pen to paper with this one.

And my first impressions? the torch was a little fiddly to use and with the UV ink, it took a little getting used to find the extra text, especially as it was a Sunny evening, but this morning with it being very gloomy and overcast, i can see the UV rather nicely

. the little touches such as the tentacles in the sewers and dark corners and the subliminal messaging the the ads was a really nice touch.

The Story? I found it worked really well as an tight self contained one piece, similar to what Warren did with Apparat Single Vol 1. I liked the use of both high and low tech ideas to avoid modern electronic surveillance.

The story was great, and D'Israeli's art was simply fantastic, but my primary thoughts on the book are technical. The way the UV ink could peek through the other side of the page, or transfer over to the facing page. The clever use of broken lines to hide UV word balloons. The way the UV ink was subtle in the story and used so strongly in the bonus material. Things like that.

Follow-up thoughts involve the difference in things I think in words vs those that aren't so clearly defined. It felt like I was part of the story. There was a moment when I was reading the comic right after I just gave my torch a once over and when the character described the torch while I was holding it in my hand, it put a smile to my face. Like the protagonist might show up at my doorstep looking for the SVK. nicely done.

and there is definitely something there with this type of technology, but i did notice problems.

First off the torch itself is glitchy. It has two lights, one turns on fine, but the other one blinks like a defective neon light. Have to ask for new one.
Also, the only way to even get a chance at reading the invisible words I had to turn off lights in my room and read the book in the dark.
3rd some of the invisible ink bled to the other side of paper on some instances and second some of the words in the invisble ink were so blurry I couldn't read anything.
Plus there was a huge strain in my eyes in trying to read the invisible words I could read.
