SDCC madness will arrive in a couple of weeks. I've enjoyed my experiences there as long as I generally avoid the big media events. Brian Wood talking about NORTHLANDERS when it was starting up was a fun experience, for example.

So for those Whitechapelers <del >insane enough</del> dedicated enough to go this year, what will you be checking out? I've definitely penciled in the BURN NOTICE prequel movie and the Garth Ennis STITCHED premiere.

There are going to be a lot of sad, inattentive geeks out there who don't read far enough to realize that a panel that has Warren Ellis in the name doesn't necessarily have Warren Ellis on the panel...

Even so, I am interested in the Captured Ghosts panel, just to see what they have to say. Probably the biggest Hollywoody thing I'm gunning for is Game of Thrones, and I may brave Hall H on Sunday for Doctor Who, we'll see. If the line is too insane at GoT, though, I'll be happy to wander over to Charlie Huston instead.

Will also be doing everything in my power to get into Locke & Key.

And of course the CBLDF auction... the trip is our honeymoon, and for wedding favors we donated to the CBLDF for everyone. We asked them if there was any way we could get into the auction (we don't have Saturday tix), and they said they'd see what they could do... a couple weeks later they announce that for the first time the auction is held off-site and open to all. So that's pretty neat.

Dudes and ladies, I am here to inform you that today's Charlie Huston spotlight panel was a thing of joy. the "special guest" was a Warren Ellis muppet, which made me kind of sad inside. Antony Johnston got up there and had nice things to say about Warren. But they didn't really screen the movie so much as play a couple minutes, then talk about it, then play a couple of minutes and so on.
they also showed the trailer for the Grant Morrison movie. I couldn't understand his accent worth a fuck. Don't get me wrong, I love that man but the trailer makes him look like he's super into himself and his whooaaa way out there ideas.

Back from SDCC. Wisely avoided the mainstream media panels, though bummed about missing the preview for THE RIVER. The STITCHED short film was okay but nothing spectacular.

Didn't buy much, as I was trying to avoid hog wild additions to the library. However, I made an exception for the new Fantagraphics book Tim Kreider's TWILIGHT OF THE ASSHOLES, an incredibly acerbic collection of political cartoons and commentary on America that would make the overpaid clowns passing as political pundits look like cretins. Favorite comment comes after Kreider meets this intelligent guy who's getting shipped off to Iraq. The meeting inspired in Kreider a desire to ambush Paul Wolfowitz in a dark alley with a jar of Vaseline and an American flag attached to one of those staffs with an eagle with open beak and outstretched wings.

 To recap:
* Line for Thursday badge pickup: giant.
* Epic Fantasy panel with Pat Rothfuss, GRRM and others: fell asleep a little.
* Penn & Teller: Penn & Goddamn Teller.
* Dr. Horrible Sing-Along: headache.
* Charlie Huston: glad the line for Game of Thrones was so long. No way they were having that much fun.
* Eisners: Hosts not funny, local shop failed to win or place, got free comics, went home.
* Saturday: Fuck that noise, I'm going to the zoo. Also, failing to buy anything at the CBLDF auction, but still came out $300 lighter.
* Doctor Who: Fun panel? Yeah. Worth 2 hours in the H-line to get in 15 minutes late and stand in the back? Less so.

Yeah, that Ellis muppet is getting seriously sodomized. My eyes.... MY EYES!

My own Con experience was actually rather positive. Only made it to one panel - Grant Morrison's unmoderated, solo gig. Otherwise, I spent the bulk of my time meeting up with friends and colleagues, some of whom I only ever get to see in San Diego. Also took part in this odd SDCC writer/artist speed-date thingy - 25 of each met in a room, and you've got five minutes with each person, checking out their respective work, shooting the shit, sizing up. I met about twenty artists, four or five of whom I'll email and open a dialogue. Whole process was a bit awkward, but if it yields fruit, then so be it.

I also devoted to the "counterprogramming" known as Tr!ckster. This was a mash-up of bookstore, wine bar, and salon, all dedicated to creator-owned works. They also had eight or so symposiums over the four days, each on a different topic. I took in both "Building a Creator-Owned Creative Team" and "World Building". Participants included Greg Rucka, B. Clay Moore, Ivan Brandon, Mike Allred, and more. Fantastic times. Two hours a pop. Only twenty to twenty-five people in attendance.
