    So Grant Morrison (who did the amazing All-Star Superman) did an interview on how he will be portraying Superman in the new DCU. In the interview, he stated that originally, Superman was a hero to the common man, a rabble rouser who was more concerned with the economic and social inequality in America than fighting supervillians.

    This makes sense to me as I seem to remember one of the first people that Supes acutally went up against was a wife-beater. Superman was born out of the great deprestion, and as we are currently weathering a new great resession, I kinda think its fitting to have superman go back to his roots. Thoughts?

    Hmm, never thought of that connection! This new Supes looks damned interesting, and is a welcome refresher after the whole "grounded" mess of the past year and change. But I wish they were going to play him as the champion of the common man in the self-titled book also, rather than focus on his "alienness." pardons if i've gotten my news mixed up.

    My reaction the second I saw that Morrison is writing Superman again:

    Shut up and take my money!

    @Ananzitusq -- My understanding is that the "alieness" is more linked to Action Comics, which honestly makes sense considering Morrison's take on the character in the past and how a real person might react. Like, you grow up, and you realize you're different from everyone else--more than that, you find out you can see differently from everyone else--you see the cells in your mother's heart grow, or see electromagnetic waves blanketing everything. If there is a soul, Superman can see it. That's gotta be enough to make you see the world in an entirely different way from everyone else.

    I think it was Elliot S. Maggin in Miracle Monday that really set this up--with his power, he could have become detached, cold, a twisted observer and manipulator of mankind. However, because he had Ma and Pa Kent to raise him right to treat everyone with kindness and dignity and stand up for what's right, he uses that power to be a protector of mankind.

    Sorry if I'm fanboy wanking too much--I just really love the character. :)

    Superman also solved the mystery of Who Killed Jack Kennedy IN HIS FIRST ISSUE. (Go ahead, Google it. I'll wait.)

    Superman has been : blue, red, electric, not electric , with a mullet, without a mullet, best friends with Batman, enemies with Batman, Superboy, not Superboy, etc. Superman is whatever you make him.

    And by the way, his dad owned a hardware store. (Pa Kent, that is. Jor-El is just his biological dad. Although, he MIGHT have sold laser-nails or whatever the Kryptonian equivalent was. Let's see Grant set his story-telling dogs loose on THAT one.)

    This isn't the Superman with knee-pads we're talking about, is it?

    Perez's book is the one with the more armored costume, but it looks like they've toned down the knee-pad look. In Morrison's book, where they're doing more of the "champion of the oppressed" thing, he starts off with a T-shirt, jeans, and a little cape:



    Not sure if the cape works with jeans, but hey, little fanboy nitpick, I can live with it.

    @Beamish - I dunno, looks very nice, from that one panel.

    If anyone can make Superman interesting, it's probably Grant Morrison.

    Or maybe John Byrne. EH? EH? GET IT? REMEMBER? REMEMBER?

    Seriously, I wish Grant good luck. And that art DOES look nice.

    Someone explain the knee-pad version, though.

    @Jay Kay -- nah, hell, not enough fanboy wanking! Ahh, thanks for the clarification! I wasn't certain which book was focusing on those themes, but it makes perfect sense now. I'm glad Morrison is doing it too, heaven knows not many at DC could do that right.

    I'll go and say that I prefer the jeans costume over the "battle armor" costume.

    I think one of the things about Action Comics will be him eventually making his way into that costume, which is some sort of ceremonial Kryptonian wear.

    All I've every wanted from a Superman comic was for some talented writer to read maybe the first two Action Comics harcovers DC used to publish and write that character. Ignore everything else, just do that guy. And now Grant Morrison is doing as close to that as I think I'm ever going to see.

    So yeah, heavy anticipation.

    Knee-Pad Superman will be ranked below Mullet Superman but above Blue Electric Superman.

    Not sure about Jeans and A Tee Shirt Superman, where he'll be ranked. Next to Dick Superman (of the 1950s, natch!), probably.

    Am I the only one who misses Curt Swan?

    Right now my favorite news is the Hard cover collecting all 52the issue 1's11 for a whopping $5 in savings. Nothing against Grant, I have been tired of Superman for years now.

    Yeah, there's some stuff with the DCnU that I'm looking forward to or curious about--Scott Snyder on Batman, J.H. William III on Batwoman, Gail Simone on Batgirl, Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chaing on Wonder Woman, Paul Cornell on Stormwatch, a lot of their "Dark" books, even Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on Justice League--but yeah, Morrison on Action is definitely number one on my list of things I'm most looking forward to in comics in September.

    He has been doing other stuff--his Supergods book comes out this week, he did a mini-series for Vertigo called Joe the Barbarian (which I haven't read, but the art looks AMAZING), he's writing two screenplays, one is a strange sci-fi road trip movie called Sinitaro, and the other is called Dinosaurs vs. Aliens, which he's also doing a graphic novel adaptation of the latter.

    @Jay Kay: I'll back you up on Joe the Barbarian - the artist, Sean Gordon Murphy, draws and inks like a fucking maniac, in the best possible way. I'd like to see Morrison team up with more artists of his caliber of skill and individuality.
