I always love the small, obscure references hidden in there, but my favorite one of all time showed up in this volume. There is a "Karkus" comic book at the news vendor's rack about 20 pages in. Karkus is a fictional comic character that comes to life in the "Mind Robber" serial in 1968 on Doctor Who. The back story is that he is a popular comic book character from the early 21st century timeline of the Second Doctor's companion, Zoe and comes from her memories. The actor portraying Karkus wore a huge rubber muscle suit that looks more like something out of a post 90's comic book movie than a 60's TV show and he has a almost fetish -style leather-ish mask, something else that superheroes in the 60's didn't seem to be wearing but modern ones do. It's almost like Karkus predicted (or maybe influenced?) the darker heroes that actually would show up and be popular her and now in the early 21st century. I always wondered if a younger Alan Moore had ever seen the serial and been subtly influenced by it to do his part in helping making this grimmer and grittier funny book future a reality?
It makes it even more fun that Troughton as the Doctor shows up in the first panel of that very page too!
