    "When I wrote "Look (Stop Me If You've Heard This One) But There Were These Two Fellers", that was definitely the last series. They were going to make no more, so in that series we went right over the top; we went really weird, because they knew there weren't going to be any more."

    No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss.

    I will allow original photography.

    No more than ONE submission by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    THE AVENGERS. The TV show. (We will disregard the dismal film adaptation.)

    The Avengers is a 1960s British television series in the Spy-Fi genre set in cold war Britain. The Avengers focused on John Steed (Patrick Macnee) and his succession of investigative partners working as government agents for the "Ministry". As the series evolved Steed's later partners were high profile, stylish women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), followed by Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and later Tara King (Linda Thorson). Later episodes increasingly incorporated elements of science fiction and fantasy, parody and British eccentricity.




    Science fiction fantasy elements (a style later known as Spy-fi) emerged in stories. The duo would encounter killer robots ("The Cybernauts"), and giant alien carnivorous plants ("The Man-Eater of Surrey Green").


    The Wikipedia entry for the show is actually very good.

    Comedy was evident in the names and acronyms of the organizations. For example, in "The Living Dead", two rival groups examine reported ghost sightings: FOG (Friends Of Ghosts) and SMOG (Scientific Measurement Of Ghosts). "The Hidden Tiger" features the Philanthropic Union for Rescue, Relief and Recuperation of Cats — PURRR — led by characters named Cheshire, Manx, and Angora.


    Your job is to redesign, revamp, reinvent, remake and remodel this property into something that would work for the 21st Century.

    You have one week.

    I'm only passingly familiar with The Avengers, but it seems like the American show Wild WIld West may have been a direct rip-off (substituting the quintissentially American cowboy hat and horse for the quintissentially British bowler and roadster). They seem similar, what with the spies, eccentricity, random sci-fi/fantasy elements, and horrible movie adaptations. As a kid I loved Wild Wild West (although I haven't seen it in a decade or more), so I'll have to check out The Avengers.

    Sizer sets the bar again. I love where Jason's humor is going and imagine if the yanks got a hold of it we would be seeing Valente or Oxbrow (we 'Mericans like to re-film things).

    @Paul: In my case, remakes featuring ethnically varied, sexually objectified young men are not so much a creative exercise as a reflex, so it's less a matter of great minds thinking alike as it is one of us taking the high road and the other the low road, but both of us ending up somewhere in Scotland. :) Plus, mine would have been less tasteful; best that you did it. ;)
    @Beamish: My many apologies include one to those fellow 'Merkins who will find the "John Peel" joke perplexing. :( As well as to the many Brits who will probably find it all too obvious a play on words.
    P.S. I really didn't intend "nag" as a pun. I just noticed it.

    Yeah, I know the "switch the gender" option is pretty standard, but I also wanted to get away from the white skin and get some ethnicity in there as well.

    I was also channeling the attempt from a few years ago to imagine males in similar costumes that woman usually wear, like a male version of the Star Sapphire costume meme that went around a bit.

    Sorry if I beat anyone to the punch, but I hold full confidence that it just means you all will come up with even more twisted and inspired outcomes, right? And there's always better designs too.

    @paul...don't sweat it. I have a hard enough time doing sexy ladies..let alone sexy lads. You nailed it.

    Here's my take. A new Avengers for a new generation with Lady Steed and Doctor Augustus. Tried to recall my tom-boyish ex-flatmate for Steed's character.
