Hey, EvilPants -- if you liked Frazer Irving (as I certainly do), you could do far worse than looking at Necronauts. Charles Fort, Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini and HP Lovecraft fighting Old Ones with cricket bats.

That's because it is and you should. It is in the Tharg's Terror Tales Presents volume coming to the US this Halloween if anyone wants to pick it up. Not 2000AD-related but if you liked that then pick up Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained, which also features a younger Fort along with a whippersnapper called HP all drawn by Irving (oh and keep an eye on Zarjaz, the 2000AD fanzine, for Necronauts sequels ;) ).
Also ones to watch out at the end of the year: Cradlegrave (a stand alone urban horror story from John Smith and Edmund Bagwell) and Insurrection (a Dreddworld story that is basically WH40K set in the same universe as Dredd, by Dan Abnett and Colin MacNeil, who previously worked together on the WH40K story Bloodquest) - both universally acclaimed at the time with both the art and writing firing on both barrels. Pre-order them now, you won't be disappointed. -

the very first thing I posted on Whitechapel was a request for recommendations for good new brit comics to use in a set of lectures. most replies were telling me Cradlegrave which was running in the progs at the time so i've been waiting for this trade for a while now.
i only found out about Insurrection a week or so ago and i'm pretty stoked about that too - abnett does space war very well (at least in novel form) - it was Gordon Rennie who wrote Bloodquest though. -

Only a little bit ;) I'm afraid that once away from 2000AD I doubt I have much original to offer on the comics recommendations front (we are all reading Ellis, Moore, Morrison and Mignola according to preference), although if you enjoy the more Lovecraftian aspects of Necronauts then Self Made Hero's Lovecraft Anthology is an excellent sampler of adaptations (and their Mountains of Madness has, rightly, had praise rained down upon it).
On the 2000AD front it might be worth keeping an eye on eBay for Extreme Editions (folks in the UK can pick them up from the 2000 AD shop) as they often collect stories that don't make it to the trade. Details are on Barney. I'd recommend Firekind in #8 (which has made some suspicious about its influence on Avatar), Shako in #18 (for old school polar bear mayhem, a little close to the bone with today's news), Revere in #20 (John Smith takes a lot of acid, goes a bit mad and writes one of the odder 2000AD stories), The Dead in #21 (Peter Milligan teaming up with Belardinelli, a meeting of weird minds from two different generations of 2000AD creator, you also get early Tyranny Rex stories which have yet to be reprinted despite my campaigning for it), Armoured Gideon in #23 (giant robots killing monsters, with added Slaughter Bowl, one of the better stories in the Summer Offensive) and possibly Times Flies in #19 (for a fun Garth Ennis romp with lovely art from Philip Bond although being humour of the rather wacky variety people's mileage varies a lot).Just finished Necronauts. It's less explicitly Lovecraftian but an enjoyable romp with some seriously nice art. The trade isn't as lovely as the Rebellion one but that is a bit special (large glossy, pages with the extra folding bit on the cover) but we can't let that spoil our enjoyment. I did an interview with Frazer and reviewed both comics for the Fortean Times website but a redesign has made them disappear in a manner suggesting the universe is odder than we think. I keep meaning to bung them up elsewhere.Just finished Cradlegrave, and I can't say that I enjoyed that as much. Sorry.
No need to apologise (not to me anyway, you've probably made John Smith cry ;) ), I know a couple of people that didn't enjoy it (perhaps I should have said "almost universally acclaimed"), so it isn't for everyone - the setting/genre might not be some people's cup of tea and I know some are put of by the Smithian word salad (although I'm a fan and think it is well worth persisting with - just keep the first bit of the sentence in mind with my recommendations if you discover you aren't much of a fan of us work). -
has anyone mentioned the Cursed Earth? Complete with token punk and Matchbox toy plug, it's an excellent snapshot of early 2000AD and late 70s Britain. And it upset McDonalds and the Colonel. Go, find, read!

Although it upset enough American corporations that you'd need to buy the original progs to read the entire story as it has never been reprinted whole. A great story without those bits though.

The Cradlegrave collection details are released along with the cover (it is a paperback though) and they bagged Ramsey Campbell for the introduction (John is a big fan of his so really wanted to get him for this and Robo-Keef managed to get him).

As I said, I think this and Insurrection are going to be the big hits of the upcoming releases at the end of the year. If anyone is going to ThoughtBubble I think Colin MacNeil is going (artist on Insurrection) and I'm trying to pester John Smith into going (he went last year when he had nothing to promote, thanks to Peter "no I'm not him" Doherty's persuasive powers), so anyone attending might be able to get them signed too (although no promises at this stage ;) ). -
As a long-time 2000AD reader, with my collection from approx #350-1450, which is in boxes somewhere in Christchurch (thank God the storage faculty didn't get munted in the earthquakes), I've been revisiting the stories in the trades. Recent highlights are the Shimura trade. I'm gagging to get Hondo-City Law, which should arrive next week.
All of Nemesis: The Warlock. A.B.C Warriors: The Black Hole, and also the more recent HC collections of the Volgan War, painted by Clint Langley (who's also done amazing work on Slaine).
For those of you who said Button Man, a resounding SECONDED. And you know that Mazeworld is finally being collected, right? I also love Ranson's Cassandra work, but the trades are so hard to find.
My only beef with the recent phonebook reprints of series like Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper, Casebooks, is that the art is not in its original size. This makes me cry sometimes. -

Judge Anderson: Childhood's End is one of my favourites for a number of reasons. First, it takes place on Mars. Second, it's a dungeon delve into ancient alien ruins. Third, while it's a tad overly stylised the art is quite striking. Finally, it's about Cassandra Anderson and is the culmination and payoff of years of plotlines about her, her roles as a psion and a Psi Judge, and certain key events in the life of Mega City-1. Critically, while with pretty much all of Dredd's big events life continued on unchanged for old Stoney Face after they were over, this ends with a genuine change of the status quo.
Judgement on Gotham is pure crack: Batman accidentially ends up in Mega City-1 and loses a pissing contest with Dredd only to be rescued by Anderson and returned to Gotham so they can track down and stop Judge Death & the Scarecrow from slaughtering the world. The art by Simon Bisley is a pitch perfect accompaniment to a script that effortlessly captures the essence and personality of its characters. -

Just a note to say 1750 is another jumping on point and it sees the return of Indigo Prime and Dirty Frank, as well as Dredd and Ampney Crucis. Also after a double-length opener from, Mr Crucis Kek-W's Angel Zero starts in prog 1751. Along with Wagner/Flint on Dredd this is looking like one of the best line-ups this year and possibly for a few years. -

@ I grew up on 2000 A.D. I imagine everyone has recommended everything i would put forth..Toby the robot dog scared the shit out of me when reading HALO JONES..The early BAD COMPANY was a blinding read.."The diaries of Danny Frank". Grant Morrison doing Dredd was well nasty...Bisley on ABC WARRIORS in black and white was amazing...ZENITH was ground breaking...SLAINE was pure hardcore sword and sorcery ( i used to have a mad T with him having a warpspasm and I'M WARPED in big letters on it)...NEMESIS..MENTAL! I lost my entire collection from 2 to whatever years ago when my flat was flooded. I'm not pissed off about it, I just hope it got recycled when i had to move.
