Well, I mostly lurk (I'm the lurking type - Lovecraft would loved me) but I thought I'd squirm out for a bit to talk about my comic coming out from Image in October. The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, written by me with art by Tradd Moore and colors by Whitechapel's own Felipe Sobreiro.

It's a fun, funny ridiculously violent book that's sort of a superhero/horror hybrid. Here, have a look at the cover and preorder thinger:

story JUSTIN JORDAN
art & cover TRADD MOORE
OCTOBER 5
32 PAGES / FC / M
$2.99
Luther Strode is just your average nerd until he sends away for a bodybuilding course from an old comic book, one that works a whole lot better than he ever imagined. His newfound strength and strange talents make school a lot easier, but they’ve also caused some very, very bad people to take a very, very keen interest in him. Things will never be the same for Luther Strode…if he survives.

AUG110403

If you dig it, I would not object to spreading the preorder thinger around, or assaulting your favored comic book retailer with it.

@ Curt - Sure, no problem. I'll answer briefly here, but if you want to pick my brain privately (anyone else is free to talk to me, too) you can shoot me an email at JustinJordan at gmail

Basically, we just sent the pitch in via email, and they said yes. I have been around comics for a few years (I had three Zuda finalist comics, for instance) and I had met Eric Stephenson verrrrry briefly at a con a couple of years ago, but I think I was completely unknown to Image. This was not my first pitch to Image, actually. I think it may have been my fourth or fifth, one of which they asked to see a hard copy version of but ultimately passed on. That was when Larsen was publisher, so I don't think those pitches had any effect one way or another on Luther.

The pitch was pretty basic - I mentioned who I was and very briefly what the comic was about in the email body, then attached a cover letter that had more about Tradd, Felipe and I and an expanded summary of what the book is about (a paragraph or so), a synopsis of the series on issue by issue basis, and six pages of art plus the cover (the cover we pitched was slightly different than the final version - Felipe came up with a cooler logo). I think this is pretty much what they ask for in the submission guidelines.

I think peopl sweat the submissions process too much. What matters (this is my opinion) is the art and the story. I'm not saying you should send one pin up and an eightypage story bible, but as long as the story is good and the art is good, you shouldn't sweat the submission too much. It'd be a rare company that would shit can a good series because your pitch wasn't perfect.

(Having said that, I do sweat the pitch. Not so much making sure it's only one page long or whatever, but making sure I really have the essence of what the story is about down. This is pretty helpful later on when you're trying to talk to journalists.)

Now, this is going a little far afield, but writers should (and this the opinion of somebody on their first real success, so grain of salt may be necessary) focus on two things: the craft of writing, and working with the right people. The craft part is something I can't help with, other than that you should write a lot, but the artist thing I can talk about. The trick to getting good artists to work with you is having artists work with you.

Or less paradoxically, the more artists you work with, the easier it will be to get other artists to work with you. When I pitched Tradd, I was able to point him to half a dozen things I'd done, which allowed him to see how I write, and that I'm at the very least not so much of an asshole that I can't be worked with. So if you're wanting to bust in as a writer, get in the habit of looking for artists and approaching them, even if it's just for a five page story.

@Ahlhelm - THanks! I hope you like it as much as we do. We may be slightly biased.

@ werwolf - Sweet! I've got people buying in Germany, Austria, Spain, the UK and Australia. That I know of. International!

Just read #1. Nice work, fellas.

I think special mention should go to Felipe Sobreiro's colours: very clean, nice use of differing yet complimentary palettes for the two story threads. I'm colour blind and when the colouring is too busy or from a too limited part of the spectrum, it makes the action harder to follow and detracts from the book as a whole. Absolutely not the case here. The art is clean and crisp, even when it's violent and dirty. [Although completely different stylistically, the first comparison that springs to mind is McNiven and Ponsor's current work on Captain America].

As for the story: The Hercules Method is great. (Won't talk any more about the story. Don't want to ruin it for anyone, loved that page, though)

The only negative is the fact that that wanker Mark Millar had the nerve to release Superior while you were still working on this. But the similarities are amazingly superficial it's just... I read them both today... On the plus side: you've been lumped in with Captain America and Millarworld first time out. That has to be worth something.

I'm along for the ride. Let's go!

Hey, look at that: your first proper Whitechapel review!

@VickVega - Hope you enjoyed it man!

@Nick - Thanks, man! Finding the right colorist for a project is the hardest part, even moreso than finding the right artist. Felipe is just knocking it out of the park with his colors, which is an aspect of comics that I don't think gets enough credit. Colors can really make or break the mood of the book, so getting Felipe, who gets what we're doing, was a hige boon to the book.

So I go to the guy at the counter and ask-- dude flips out! Turns out HE'D just read it the night before and popped all his remaining copies up by the register. It was noon, and he'd already sold 8 copies. I was the 9th...glad I got there when I did, because I'm sure he sold out by the end of the day.

Anyhow-- great book. I'm on board.

Sorry, I suck! I blame um... the time change! Yes, that's it. The additional hour in the day killed my internal clock.

So, things-

1) Petra has thrown out a few hints she's not as perfect as all that (going over to her place "not gonna happen" is a giant red flag that she's got problems going on) but she's still a bit wish-fulfillment. All Luther has had to do is let Petra throw herself at him. Also, if she like the shy, skinny Luther, I'm curious as to her take on his transformation into Mr Muscles.

2) The choreography at Paul's place. Paul is downstairs lifing weights, goes upstairs to dining room, sees parents murdered, and then it gets a bit odd. Baldmuscles McBeard hops to the door, punches through it, and Paul falls down the stairs.

I didn't really concern myself with anything but the action of this scene until I noticed that the angle on the door seems off by 90 degrees in the hopping panel where McBeard (did I miss his name?) says "Manners." The problem is that pulling one thread leads to others. Now, the reading of the panels shows hop-land-punch through door, but the angle of the door means he'd need to pivot 90 degrees. Maybe he did, that'd be no big deal at all, but way the two panels work together says land-punch. Then Paul falls down the stairs (and I don't mind at all that a fall like that with the brace would do terrible damage, in the real world, because that's not what this comic is for) but now that I've seen one thing I'm wondering why there's a door at the top of the stairs leading to a dining room on the second floor. The splinters all over the place and down the stairs make it pretty clear that breaking the door sent them there.

Bonus 3!) Paul throws a punch, it flies to Pete, Luther has a fantasy/nightmare. Then the punch is hanging stopped in midair, and I don't know why.

Honestly, nit-picking stuff. The only one that really had me scratching my head was #3. I've been having a total blast with the book and having friends read it, so please don't think this is all I took away from the book. I just have a thing for fight choreography, and may have seen one too many anime/manga where the guy has a (few dozen) girl(s) throw themselves at him for no reason I can see.

Ooh, one more thing- I'm kind of hoping Paul hates McBeard more than Strode. The difference between "that asshole at school" and "the guy who killed my parents", kind of thing. :)

 Haha, no worries.

"1) Petra has thrown out a few hints she's not as perfect as all that (going over to her place "not gonna happen" is a giant red flag that she's got problems going on) but she's still a bit wish-fulfillment. All Luther has had to do is let Petra throw herself at him. Also, if she like the shy, skinny Luther, I'm curious as to her take on his transformation into Mr Muscles."

Some of this actually gets addressed in the rest of the series, but there are a couple of things going on: Petra was always interested in Luther, but her two modes are basically aloof and really aggressive. But her forwardness is at least in part because Luther turns into an inarticulate dweeb when she does it, and she thinks it's funny.

"The choreography at Paul's place.

The splinters all over the place and down the stairs make it pretty clear that breaking the door sent them there."

That's meant to be him lifting in a furnished basement, which he's basically turned into a exercise room and party den, which, admittedly isn't obvious (the door and windows don't help). Specifically, the window behind the Librarian is the back of the house, and the stairs lead in that direction. The Librarian does have to pivot 90 degrees to punch the door, and that is my fault, because with how I wrote the scene there wasn't a better way for Tradd to depict what was going on.

"Bonus 3!) Paul throws a punch, it flies to Pete, Luther has a fantasy/nightmare. Then the punch is hanging stopped in midair, and I don't know why."

Luther DID intercept the punch, but that was the only bit that actually happened. The hanging fist panel is actually Luther throwing Paul's hand down, and he's rubbing his fist in the next scene because Luther did give it a pretty good squeeze - this is why Paul decides not to kick Luther's ass, because the speed and strength frightens him, ot that he'd admit it. What I should have done was have the hand intercepted, then Luther's eye when that sequence starts, because the eye focus is the story signifier for Luthervision.

I was thinking lifting in the basement made more sense! Especially with the door at the top of the stairs. I double-checked before posting to see if I got it wrong and the windows were all first-floor kind of things. Whoops. :)

Re-reading the scene with the punch, I can see how it works now. Plus I didn't notice the trail of yellow sparkle-things from Paul's hand to Luther's until about a second ago. My initial reading of Luther's pose was of him moving to get between them without any actual contact having happened yet, with everything on the preceding two pages being one of those bits where Luther looks slightly into the future to forecast his actions.

Not quite sure why I led with Petra, because of all of them that was my least important question. Especially seeing as I basically half-answered it while asking. Thanks for the answers, though. :)

Congrats on the sell-out on issue #2, by the way. It's always great to see something fun and original get some good attention. I don't know what's in the water over at Image this year but stuff like Luther Strode and Witch Doctor has been making me a very happy comic reader.
