    So. Warren’s REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. I plan to keep it running – once a week. Artists need a place to show off, Whitechapel should always always always be It.

    Let’s start on a Weirdness High.

    Sekhmet and Sekhmet

    THE RULES:

    This is ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a 2nd-Generation Arse Eel deployment and a banned account.

    No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. Original photography is fine.

    No more than ONE submission by any one person.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    SEKHMET – Warrior Goddess.

    It has come to my attention that many of our US friends’ first childhood exposure to ancient mythologies came via mainstream Superheroes, appropriated from the same. Thor, Hercules and others: for millions of people the Spandex Supers were a gateway-drug to forgotten cultures. I want to know what would’ve happened if Marvel or DC had picked a very different deity to crowbar into their heroic continuities. How would she look on the spinracks of today?

    In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet (also spelled Sachmet, Sakmet, Sakhet, Sekmet, Sakhmet and Sekhet; and given the Greek name, Sachmis), was originally the warrior goddess as well as goddess of healing for Upper Egypt. She is depicted as a lioness, the fiercest hunter known to the Egyptians. It was said that her breath created the desert. She was seen as the protector of the pharaohs and led them in warfare.


    So what we’ve got is a she-fiend with a leonine vibe, who heals as often as she slaughters. Possibly with desiccative halitosis. And it gets better:

    During an annual festival held at the beginning of the year, a festival of intoxication, the Egyptians danced and played music to soothe the wildness of the goddess and drank great quantities of beer ritually to imitate the extreme drunkenness that stopped the wrath of the goddess—when she almost destroyed humankind.


    …so our gal is a Massive Sop as well.

    Note that Marvel did indeed create a short-lived version of their own back in the 70’s (see the image up top). For some reason they gave her a cock and a fruity beard. Let’s stay as far away from that as possible.

    Wow, that's a fantastic take on the Remake/Remodel idea! This is the kind of thing that makes me wish I could have artistic talent from a bottle instead of having to earn it over decades like people with talent have done.

    Hi, I'm new here. Please don't hurt me.

    Been meaning to enter one of these for ages. But either didn't have time or just plain forgot. Or, as in the case of The Avengers last week; got all excited and keyed up at the prospect... and then realised I had absolutely no belief it could, or should be done. I have too much love for those characters and that series to want to see me trying to re-work it.

    Sekhmet, on the other hand... So, so much potential there. I regret not being able to enter more than once. I haven't taken enough advantage of the potential weird by any means. So very much looking forward to seeing what you all produce.

    @Rooth There's so many directions that this could be taken in. I figured mine was most likely one others would get to first if I didn't aim for first off the bat. My only vague regret is not going with reworking the sun and uraeus as a big glowing ball of string perpetually taunting her over her head.
