    I lived in LA during the post-Rodney King rioting. It spread sporadically down the freeways, coming within a couple miles of me. From my apartment window, I could see plumes of smoke rising from Downtown, then Hollywood... while my neighborhood stayed unnaturally quiet. And with all of that happening in real time, I watched it all unfold on TV.

    @magnus - The West Londoner put up a couple of pictures, which looked faked, then took them down on that basis. Haven't found them elsewhere yet. As far as I know there's no violence in that area.

    Edit: Twitter lights up with eyewitnesses to say that the Eye is not burning. Andy Carvin is a good person to follow if you're not already, collates and retweets a ton of stuff.

    Brent - this really does remind me a lot of the LA riots of 1992.

    256 - Good ole Andy Carvin. I don't even know if he's still with NPR but he's been on the ball with happenings/eruptions as live-Tweeted since the Tehran protests more than a year ago.

    Were it not for my Whitechapel peeps (and following Penny Red thanks to Herr Ellis) I'd know next to nothing of the demos of the past year. Someone even kindly explained kettling to me.

    Now... to find who's on hand to bear witness to protests in Chile.

    On a lighter note at least some of these Beyonce CD's that plague this Earth will surely burn in the fires.
    Stay safe don't breath the smoke and pre-break and board up your windows it saved many of small businesses from getting looted in the LA riot.

    I actually feel quite upset about it. I lived on st johns road in clapham junction for two years, right above that electrical store. Thank fuck I moved out a year ago, i don't know where I would have gone. Most of my friends live in the other areas affected.

    We all spent last night texting each other to make sure everyone had a safe route home.

    Everyone keeps saying that the police aren't doing anything but it must be fucking impossible - the looters are all bloody kids. It must be difficult to go and knock heads when half of them are 15-16 years old. But having said that they're discussing calling in the army on tv. They're also talking about curfews but I'm not sure what that will do when apparently things kicked off at 2pm in lewisham yesterday.

    I think it may well get worse before it gets better.

    Yeah, I think a massive unsurprising lurch to the right as a knee-jerk reaction to what I can best describe as a few hundred disaffected teens deciding to fuck shit up during their summer holidays will be much worse in the long term for the general public than any rioting we've seen so far.

    Water Cannon? The Army? Curfews? Are people really being serious?

    When the met stop sitting on their hands in order to score political points against the government cut-backs to frontline numbers we might actually be able to have some kind of reasoned response.

    We live 100 yards from JD sports in Wood Green, just off the High Street.

    Luckily we were out of town this weekend, but the Riot Van was parked outside our house for a good portion of the night. Although from the people I've spoken to they did sweet FA for 3 hours whilst the High Street was looted. Most of the shops are now open again. The local bookshop has a good blog that sums up my feelings quite well.

    Last night there was a large mob of lads milling around in the street about 11pm, a car got its window smashed (if not more) and a brick found its way into our garden. Not conducive to a very relaxing nights sleep.

    Then this morning I come into work in Camden and find another smashed up JD Sports, the Electric Ballroom boarded up and a brick embedded in the the door of a local tattooist. Otherwise south of the Canal Camden was looking relatively good. Not so sure about Chalk Farm end...

    Hope this calms down soon.

    11.00am: My colleague Haroon Siddique sends this amazing story about a hold-up at a Michelin-starred restaurant. He writes:

    Staff at the Michelin-starred restaurant the Ledbury, in Notting Hill, north-west London, leapt to the defence of diners when it was targeted by a gang last night.

    One of those eating at the restaurant when it came under attack was Louise Yang, who blogs under the name Naked Sushi and posted an account of the heroic intervention by staff.

    A restaurant spokesman said the Ledbury would be releasing a statement shortly but confirmed the basic details of the incident. Yang wrote:

    Around the fourth dish of the tasting course, there were loud bangs outside. The restaurant staff [were] yelling at us to get away from the windows. Before I knew it, the front door, a solid piece of glass, shattered and people came crashing in with hoodies, masks, and random weapons.

    The looters were yelling at us to get down and throwing stuff all over the place. I got down and started taking off my wedding and engagement ring to hide somewhere, but unfortunately wasn't fast enough. One looter came up and demanded my phone. I didn't have it with me since it was in my purse and it was out of arm reach. I also didn't want to lead him to my passport, so I said I didn't have one.

    He told me to take off my rings and grabbed my hand, trying to yank them off. His friend tried to help too, but the rings wouldn't come off and I just yelled at him that I'd take them off myself. In hindsight, now that I know that gun control is so fierce in England and he only had a bat, I should have held on to my rings better and maybe slugged him in the face.

    The kitchen staff at the Ledbury went beyond their call of duty by rushing up from the kitchen with rolling pins, fry baskets, and other dangerous kitchen tools and scared off the looters. Then they provided well-needed glasses of alcohol including champagne and whisky.

    Yang said that word then came that the looters were coming back a second time at which point the staff ushered the diners into the bathrooms and told them to lock the doors. A few minutes later, they led them into the wine cellar and told us to lock ourselves in there. She concluded:

    Guy who took my ring, I hope you put it to good use and don't just dump it in the street. Also, I hope you get a case of flaming diarrhoea for the rest of your life. Ledbury staff, thanks for keeping things under control and giving me some petit fours to munch on.

    Wow, sad. Strangely it's not so much the destruction that's upsetting to me as trying to profit from the situation. But it's not surprising behavior because we have plenty of profitable and respected industries that benefit from disaster.

    Or if these people had more means to begin with they might be arms dealers, accountants or manufacturers, but they still wouldn't have ethics. I guess the upshot is that their destruction happens on a smaller scale.

    I'm not trying to make light of the situation. I just think these people are on the bottom rung of society and shit rolls down hill.

    As an aside, wouldn't water cannons with bright red paint/dye that takes a few days/weeks to wash off work well? Maybe add something in there to make it glow in the dark too? Although it'd be equal parts terrifying(in person) and hilarious(from a distance).
