Just thought I'd put this up because, well, we all drink such nice beers. And I'll not hijack it and turn it in to a home brewing journal this time. Promise. As a side question, should this be a monthly thread? Or a general one? Hmm...I'll ask in the CHANGES thread.

Anyways!

I have been getting constant cravings for this beer lately:

by the wonderful Spearhead Brewery based here in Toronto (yay local!). five different malts, three different hops and Pineapple juice which leaves a really refreshing, nicely bitter brew that is perfect for summer. Sadly, it's only available in pubs and not stores. But damn, I'm heading to a pub after work today just to have a single glass. It really hits the spot.

So what beer is the rest of Whitechapel drinking?

This was, by far, the best Imperial Stout I've everhad. Thick, dark like molasses, it smelled like you were sniffing dark chocolate. Had a quick google and found this which is getting my mouth watering;

This porter-style beer has a striking label showing a medieval knight entering battle on horseback. It is named after Black Tom, a knight who fought in the Battle of Winceby near the famous Bolingbroke Castle in 1643.
Bateman's Dark Lord (England)
(RP) The beer has a rich, barley-white head that tops a dark ruby-brown body. It is brewed with Maris Otter pale malt (85%), 10.5% crystal malt – this is an extremely high proportion of crystal – 3% wheat and 1.5% roasted barley. The hops are Goldings with 40% of the hop grist made up of Challenger, which are used as a late hop in the copper boil for additional aroma and flavour. The colour rating is 106, bitterness units 48. Dark Lord has a superb aroma of creamy malt, dark burnt fruit, espresso coffee and hop resins. Spicy and peppery hops burst across the tongue, balanced by roasted grain, tart fruit and powerful notes of coffee and dark chocolate. The long finish has a big punch of bitter and resinous hops, but the bitterness is balanced by roasted grain and tangy fruit. Full-bodied, complex and quenching.

Last night, I had the pleasure of sampling Bluegrass Brewing Company's (out of Louisville, Kentucky, USA) Bourbon Barrel Stout, as part of the inaugural Oldhat's Mad-Fun-Times Internet Beer Talk Session.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a hell of a beer. The whiskey scent is extremely strong, just from the first inhalation after cracking the top off the bottle, and it never goes away. It isn't all just in the aroma, either - the first few sips taste very strongly of whiskey, although I get much more of a peaty, smooth scotch taste off it, something not unlike warmed-up Johnnie Walker actually, rather than bourbon. Admittedly, I'm far more of a scotch man than a bourbon man, so that may just be me tasting what I want to taste. One way or the other, the barrel-aging sure as hell worked on this baby!

Under the whiskey, there's something very strange and wonderful going on, here. I don't get nearly as much chocolate or coffee flavors as one usually does with a stout or porter - instead, I get a very dry, spicy flavor, with cinnamon, cloves, and even a bit of cayenne to it! Yet, it doesn't taste like a chipotle or jalepeno beer, which is good, at least for me... it doesn't go upside your head with the spiciness, and the dry finish ensures that it doesn't stick around any longer than it should. There's also a medium-strong licorice or anise taste, which goes nicely with the whiskey flavor.

I do have a few complaints about this beer, namely that it seems to only bring out the fullness of it's flavor in a very limited temperature range. I'm having another one now, stuck in the fridge overnight, and as much as I love me a cold brewski, this one just doesn't work as well chilled. Last night, I had it at maybe a bit over 78 degrees F (let's say 26 degrees C), and that actually was pretty perfect for it. This isn't a super huge problem, just the nature of the beer, but when it's this hot, I do like my beer to be a bit cooler. On the other hand, once autumn hits, this stuff is gonna be my Go-To, alongside some type of pumpkin beer. One other concern is that this thing just doesn't hold its head up that well - initial pour into a tulip glass will get you a very nice brown creamy foam, but it dissolves quickly into bubbles, and then into a thin lacing. Which is too bad, really, because the head is one of my favorite parts of a good stout.

Overall, I'd rank this beer as B+, missing an A only because of its finickiness - but then again, that's kinda why I like it. This isn't a beer you're allowed to fuck around with, but you treat it nice, and it'll treat you even nicer.

As far as food pairings go, I got one word for ya: CHILI. Red kidney beans, ground beef, an overcooked carrot, celery, a cannatamatas, whatever and as many spices as you like, and then half a bottle of this stuff, simmer it as long as your appetite will let you. I admit I haven't done this yet, but my god, I'm gonna as soon as it's my turn to make dinner again. This beer SCREAMS to be made into chili.

So I've decided that I genuinely do have some sort of alcohol synaesthesia, because I can never really describe the flavours of beer and whisky in terms other than brightness and temperature, and occasionally weight.

Alan and oldhat can vouch for my struggle in trying to describe both Guinness and the Yeti Chocolate Imperial Stout last night. Guinness has a nice comfortable warmth to it, like a light blanket on a cool summer evening, and the Yeti was stiflingly dark and warm and rich and heavy, like being smothered in pillows. But now that the Yeti's been in the fridge overnight, it's cooled off a bit (no pun intended), so now it's a bit more like a thick comforter in front of the fireplace. In both cases, it's not something I could comfortably drink a pint of, at least not without some crackers or crisps or something to clear my palate between swigs, but half a glass before bed would do a treat.

Today I'm making beer pizza again, and using Maudite (and a 2:2 mixture of white flour:wheat flour. Hopefully the wheat won't overpower the beer flavour, because I might be defeating the purpose of using something as strong as Maudite). When I bought it, the guy at the store said 'it's a lot like Trois Pistoles, but not as strong,' and I took a sip of it just now, and no. It's absolutely nothing like Trois Pistole. It's significantly brighter, and nowhere near as heavy. It's sweet, but it has an almost cidery tang to it that Trois lacks (iirc, it's been a few years since I've had Trois), and it's decidedly cooler. I could probably drink much more of it than could possibly be good for me in one go.

They also had a few bottles of Terrible (italicized to emphasize au français), and I'm very tempted to pick one up. 10.5% ABV.

I can attest to the deliciousness of a beer float/beer shake, when it's done properly. I think darker, maltier beers would be better for that, but then again I can see a wheat beer kicking ass with ice cream riding shotgun.

A slight variation of this is Guinness Punch, originating in Jamaica, which mostly consists of Guinness (or any other sweet stout), condensed/evaporated milk, and variable amounts of cocoa powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I made one with Brooklyn Brewery's Chocolate Stout, with a little bit of hot cocoa mix, and it was... well it was interesting. I suggest giving it a try.

Regarding chili beer: I've had Rogue's Chipotle Ale, and found it FASCINATING. Which isn't to say I enjoyed drinking it - I really, truly didn't. I KEPT drinking it because it was so strange. What it IS really good for, however, is cooking. I made a pretty good potato stew with it.

Since I'll be joining fellow Whitechaplians in about...an hour, I thought I'd have something light for me.

SAM'L SMITH ORGANIC RASPBERRY. You know, I've always been pretty wary of beers with Raspberry in it. I've often found that they taste of artificial flavourings and are either too syrupy or too weak. My only exception has been Amsterdam's Framboise.

This...this is VERY syrupy, but I'm getting the taste that they used actual extract in this (The USDA Certified Organic sign also gives me that impression). This is a fine, fine dessert beer, I think. Or something to slowly sip on the porch. It's good both chilled and at room temp, thanks to the flavour. But damn, you can't drink more than one just because of it's thickness. Very, very, VERY syrupy. But quite nice!

So two weeks AFTER the Stout Hangout, I found a six pack of a locally brewed Oatmeal Stout in the organic grocery down the street. Nimbus Oatmeal Stout. It's quite good. A bit richer than Guinness, with decidedly stronger chocolate notes, and a head that starts out much frothier, holds for a bit, and then fades really quickly. Easy to drink, not as heavy as Guinness, and no bitter kick in the after taste.

They were also doing a beer tasting at the store. I've already forgotten the name of the brewery, but it was a Lager and an IPA. The lager was pretty 'eh' (it was in a twelve ounce soda can, so that's pretty much automatic beer disqualification) but the IPA was notable (to me) because it had spectacularly strong grapefruit and pineapple flavours in the after taste. And you know if it's strong enough for me to actually say 'holy shit this tastes like grapefruit,' then it's pretty fucking strong. It'd probably taste more like juice than beer to those with a more developed beer palate than mine.

My opinion of the new Stone beers:

Collaborations
1) The Green Tea IPA (with Baird and Ishii) is very good. Kind of an earthy taste to it that I really liked. Doesn't actually taste like green tea, but it has some of the characteristics of the green tea flavor (the earthy bit, mainly)
2) Chocolate Cherry Stout (with Tröegs and Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard). VERY good stout. Lots of dark chocolate flavor in it, which I really liked. The cherry is almost non-existant, you almost have to look for it. Will definitely be buying more

These two collabs are very solid, great tasting beers. Any IPA lover will enjoy the green tea IPA and any stout or chocolate lover will enjoy the chocolate cherry stout.

Escondidian Black IPA
I was actually rather disappointed with this one. It's not bad, but it's not amazing, either. It DID taste like an IPA, but there was something "off" about it that prevented me from finishing my serving. It's worth trying out if you've never had a black IPA before (as was my case), because it will really trip you up to pour a dark beer that tasted like an IPA; otherwise I don't really recommend it. One of my good beer buddies bought a growler full of it and also had trouble finishing it.

New things I have picked up (actually the only new thing) is Dogfish Head Sah'Tea, which I've had once before and LOVED. It's a chai flavored beer and it tastes, well...like chai. And it works beautifully. So excited to have found another bottle.

Okay, so, due to some circumstances, I've made it my goal tonight to get depressingly drunk. Here's what I'm drinking:

Unibroue's Blanche de Chambly: Belgian-style wheat beer from Quebec. Hints of coriander in the aroma and a sliiiiiight taste of orange, but I've never really been impressed with this one. I prefer it's stronger cousins La Fin du Monde and Trois Pistoles

Great Lake's Brewery's Miami Weiss (ho ho ho): Actually, not a weiss at all, AND it's Canadian (they admit on the back of the bottle that they just liked the name) but an America-style wheat beer that's been hopped to hell and brewed with pale ale yeast. Lovely floral aroma to it, but the hops just punches the hell out of you upon the first taste and throughout the mouthfeel of it. As it goes down there's a hint of citrus, which makes it all very nice.

Beau's All Natural Brewing Company's Festivale: Summer seasonal beer that is quickly dropping from the shelves, so I decided to get a bottle to say goodbye. Pleased to find that it's aged well since it was bottled at the start of this month. When I first tried this brew (when it was first tapped at a Beau's event, actually) I really appreciated the balance between hoppiness and maltiness, found in the tastes (basically it would start bitter and get progressively sweeter as it went down your tongue). But this is different. The hoppy taste that was once pretty noticeable is now a whisper and has been completely taken over my a dark, refreshing, biscuity malt taste which makes this beer just lovely.

After this, Muskoka Harvest Ale. Will let you know about that soon.

 Aaaaaeeeeeiiiit's PUMPKIN BEER SEASON, baby!

First up is America's Original Pumpkin Ale, by Buffalo Bill's Brewery, from the west coast (the bottle lists Seattle, Portland, and Berkeley as brewing and bottling centers, so your guess is as good as mine). When drunk cold, it's got a honey-sweet and refreshing flavor, with a hint of nutmeg. Let it warm up a bit, though, and the pumpkin rolls in out of the fog, putting you instantly in the right mindset for comfy sweaters, football (the kind with the teams with animal names) games on TV, and pleasant hours raking the leaves alone with your thoughts. I love pumpkin beer for its ability to utterly and perfectly transport the drinker to very particular place and time. There are better-tasting, more complex, and certainly more alcoholic brews out there, but as a mental time-machine, nothing stands up to a good pumpkin beer, at least not for my money. AOPA has almost no hop character, though the hops are there in the aroma if you look for them - and believe me, you REALLY have to look for them. For someone like me, who likes hops but doesn't necessarily need them in his beer, that's just fine, but if you're a hophead, this might not be the pumpkin beer for you.

That would be Dogfish Head's Punkin' Ale.

This baby's got the hops, not necessarily in a strong and powerful way that a pale ale or IPA would, but the hops don't exactly stay on the sidelines for this game, either. What's more, the hops are perfectly balanced by the nutmeg and cinnamon flavors in this beer, creating just the perfect bittersweet base for the pumpkin flavor to rest on. Said flavor isn't as pronounced in the Punkin' as it is in AOPA (in fact, and forgive me if this sounds a little gross, but I actually taste something like turkey, rather than the pumpkin pie flavor you might expect), at least not by itself... what you do if you want a lot of pumpkin, is this. Mix your Punkin' with about two scoops of vanilla ice cream (and mix WELL, believe you me), and just a little bit of butterscotch flavoring. Sprinkle nutmeg on top. PUMPKIN BEER SHAKE. Glory be, it's tasty as hell. Also, I bet this stuff would make a GREAT gravy ingredient to be served over poultry and spaetzle, too.

Now, I don't actually have any on me, but around this time I do sorely miss O'Fallon's simply-named Pumpkin.

I've talked about it before, but I really can't express enough how GOOD this beer is. If given a choice, I would even choose it over the Punkin, and as an East Coast beer fiend, that's tantamount to high heresy, but it's just that good, people. It's got more sweetness than most beers would even dare, but it's not cloying, or sticky, or syrupy, or candy-like. This isn't alcoholic soda. It's sweet beer, and it's God-Damned delicious. It's also spicy, with cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar (I know, it's not a spice, but the beer is having its naughty, naughty way with me), and what might as well be sprigs of thyme and rosemary, even though I don't think O'Fallon actually included those in the wort. It's Blue-Light-Special Cheap, too, or at least it was where I got it (the local Hy-Vee drugstore's liquor section), and unlike Punkin', it comes in six-packs, not four. And believe me, you'll want six.
