I have been kicking around a few ideas in my head (all brilliant, of course), but alas, my head is where they remain. I have found, in the past, that writing with others helps me release some of those creative juices and put ideas to paper.

My first instinct is to create a space where we can register members and learn more about each other - at the very least, what people look like and who is coming so that we know what to look for at the venue. If we use a tool like Grou.ps (the inferior but free alternative to Ning), we could even be as sophisticated as having profiles that describe ourselves and our writing projects.

Mainly I just think I would be more likely to go if I felt like I knew something about the other people coming.

A group would also facilitate voting on times and locations, and provide a place online to keep in touch about how projects are going or when to set up the next date- and a place to post fiction or ideas without threat of arse eels.

It's a bit of startup effort but it's scaleable and keeps things organized.

That's just how I would do it, as a perfectionist nerd. I agree that a place for this community is a good idea, but I don't think we need to build a social network at this point, but rather focus on gathering people and meeting as quickly as possible. Then we can worry about establishing a better structure.

Alright, let's rock (although I would like to know more about the people who are coming — apparently you know something about me!).

I like the idea of a coffee shop, but it would have to be chosen carefully based on how much seating space can be expected at the chosen meeting time. Do you have a place in mind? All the coffee shops around my area are usually too full to find a seat even for one person, let alone a small group with laptops. Other possibilities that usually have better seating situations are bubble tea shops and pubs, of which I could recommend a few if we wanted to have it around the Grange neighbourhood.

The one at Spadina and Dundas, though, has a sort of upstairs-balcony-seating-level.
Jet Fuel at Parliament and Carlton has something similar, which is rarely home to more than a few people.
The best place I can think of offhand, though, is Tequila Bookworm at Queen and Bathurst, which has a huge second floor with two rooms, neither of which are ever very occupied. As long as we promised to drink and snack I'm sure they'd let us take one over without a fee.
