    Modified ecstasy 'attacks blood cancers'

    One variant increased cancer-fighting effectiveness 100-fold. It means that if 100g of un-modified ecstasy was needed to get the desired effect, only 1g of the modified ecstasy would be needed to have the same effect.
    Scientists say this also reduced the toxic effect on the brain.
    Lead researcher Professor John Gordon, from the University of Birmingham, told the BBC: "Against the cancers, particularly the leukaemia, the lymphoma and the myeloma, where we've tested these new compounds we can wipe out 100% of the cancer cells in some cases.

    @icelandbob - they needed to hold onto that one for a few weeks, we're still reeling from the whole 'modified HIV virus destroys cancer by delivering DNA rewrite payload' thing.

    HIV being such a strong virus for getting at human biology, I'm suprised they've taken so long engineering it.

    'Bulletproof Human Skin' Made From Spider Silk -I'm pretty sure the story doesn't live up to the headline (even though the story is impressive), which should be more like "Slow-Moving Bullet Proof Human Skin Cells Made From Goat Silk." OK, it is Fox News but still...:

    Take a pinch of Spider-Man's webbing, add some human skin cells, and you just may end up with skin worthy of Superman.

    A Dutch team created a piece of "bulletproof" skin from special, U.S.-made spider silk and human skin cells and found that it indeed can repel bullets -- as long as they're not traveling too fast.

    The special brand of spider silk came from genetically modified goats and worms at Utah State University in Logan. U.S. researchers have spent years harvesting the spider silk protein from the goat milk to try to make new types of super-strong fibers.

    Such skin is still a long way from adding practical protection to humans, but it gives a glimpse of what future soldiers or would-be superheroes might expect. After all, the U.S. military and other armed forces have continually sought new ways to bulletproof their warriors on the battlefield, and also have shown interest in discovering the ultimate warrior genes.


    As long as they aren't looking for Ultimate Warrior genes, we'll be OK.

    Crazy!

    You would still prolly be not superman if you were hit in the head, though. All the energy would still be like "Yo I'm a bullet's energy" and your skull would all be like "Ahhh this is a problem" (medical term), even without penetration; like how blanks can still punch in a skull in that inch or so before the paper pieces flutter apart, as would-be famous actor Jon-Erik Hexum "learned" :(

    I have heard you can get hydrostatic shock-style effects without penetration (although it is more likely just to be blunt force trauma, also that article suggest HSS might be cobblers). Blimey the things you find out from clicking around on Wikipedia: Big Hole School, which I thought was a hentai title.

    Al Jazeera's live feed is rolling on Libya, where the rebels are in Tripoli and have apparently captured Gaddafi's sons. Looks like Gaddafi is actually on his last legs.

    Rumours are always going to fly around this sort of situation, but people are saying that Gaddafi fled over the border into Algeria overnight.

    The main concern amongst the rebel leadership now is to avoid descending into infighting as the various factions vie for overall control.
