I use linux as well, but I also keep track of a lot of windows computers for people with a pretty low tech understanding. The standard I install to keep their shit clean and mostly safe is probably overkill but keeps them good:
AVG, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, spyware blaster, and ccleaner.

Keep AVG running as the main Antivirus.
Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware every month or so.
Update Spyware Blaster weekly. (It doesn't actually "run" anything, it plugs common/known vulnerabilities before they can be attacked)
Ccleaner is great for cleaning your registry after crap removal but it's even better to keep track of what programs are running when your computer boots up.

I remembered that I have a Premium service with Trend Micro, so I called tech support and had a technician link remotely. It took two techs three hours to dig out the culprit - it was a rootkit which had hidden itself in the TCP/IP stack. Malwarebytes wouldn't even run, nor would my usual antivirus. In the end they ran Combofix under DOS, and that did the trick.

Thanks for all the help, everyone.
