I recently read that a comicbook-industry legend is making a new graphic novel, telling a Brave! New! Version! of a much-loved classic romantic tragedy... (in fact... you might say it’s the classic romantic tragedy.)

…Which, for no fucking reason, will now be set in the midst of a future tech war featuring – I shit you not – cyborgs “made of artificial DNA” and multifarious zappy death-lasers. On the plus side, it looks very very pretty. On the minus side, it’s about as lazy as Invention gets, and appears to add nothing to the thematic subject at the heart of the tale. At least it's not fucking garden gnomes, right?

Anyway. I have decided we can do better.

The Faust legend is as old as the hills. Man meets demon, man sells soul to demon in exchange for global knowledge and self-indulgence, man gets global knowledge and self-indulgence, man dies, man goes to hell to be prodded in the bottom by pointy little devils for the rest of eternity, sanctimonious fuckers the world over say “I told you so.”

Marlowe retold it in a play in five acts. Goethe retold it as a closet drama in two parts.
