    a friend of mine and I are going to start a web business/ social network/ art project and need to find a web designer / programmer and as neither of us have any experience in this kind of thing we're a bit stuck as to how much the whole process will cost. It will need to be user modifiable and link to facebook etc. we have a GPRS guy on board who will do some of the work tying people to places but basically would anyone recommend anyone or a company or something

    Does anyone have any suggestions for pretty folk or roots music with female vocals? Anything in the vein of Emily Barker or Entertainment for the Braindead.

    Tough one, without a tighter spec on exactly what functions it needs to be able to perform any price is going to be complete guess work. Depending on how much stuff you've got artwise already sorted (logos, layout ideas etc) the design costs by themselves might be steep. As a coder and not a designer, and with the massive disclaimer that this maybe well off the mark, for a basic website with some form of CMS (Content management system) and user controls I'd probably ask for between £750 and a grand (assuming that it intends to be a proper and robust business website).

    @Will Elllwod- A musician called Michelle Shocked(?) from the mid eighties may be worth checking. I saw her live and enjoyed her set. She had a big cult album. I'm probably off the mark but I think it may have been called The Texas Camp Fire sessions or Tapes. It was recorded in mono on a old cassette player. I've not heard it for decades. All my mates digged it. I'm trying to think name of a band who did a track called, i think, "Hey Jack Kerouac". Excuse my grammer. I can still hear it. It was a little upbeat but the singers voice really got to me. wish i could be a bit more specific for you.

    The company I work for just moved offices, and while most of my co-workers ended up in cubicles, I lucked into a decent office.
    Thing is, it is drab as hell (Brown cabinets and white walls, 4 ft florescent lights, etc)

    Years ago someone told me they swapped their florescent lights with daylight balanced one to make it a friendly environment. So I am going to try swapping them out next week.

    Anyone have any other tips on how to make 9-5 office life a little more comfortable?
    The company I work for is pretty laid back, anything but the most extreme changes would probably be okay....so I am open to any suggestions

    The lamps are definitely a good idea.

    Couple of ideas:
    1. Get a rug - Depending on what your floor is like, you could put a rug on the floor for color, comofort
    2. Posters, pictures, anything to break up expanses of wall
    3. A plant
    4. Paint a wall - a similar, if more drastic, take on #2. Having one wall a different color can change the feeling of the entire room.

    Put glow-in-the-dark stars on the cieling!! Line any and all unnused surfaces with toys and figurines!! Have awesome posters!! Get a magnetic whiteboard for notes and fridge magnets! Cover you filing cabinet in fridge magnets too!! (This is what is in my office)

    I would make a crazy cut up thing using comic doubles and realitively unoffensive porno e.g Put Grendel Primes heed on a fit birds face etc. Mind you i would probably really most definitely be doing this to get the sack.Ah, the wonderful Fight Club just popped into my mind.

    Seconding the plants. Spider Vines are incredibly hard to kill and I think Money Trees clean the air or something? Apparently looking at plants/natural stuff is supposed to be restful.

    Fish are probably a bit too high maintenance, but you know what aren't? SEA MONKEYS! Those little guys are fun to watch, with all of their dancing and twirling.

    but why would you when you could have Triops!

    Triops look like a cross between a horseshoe crab and a facehugger (look out Sigourney!), and can grow to be up to 2” long. Oh yeah, and THEY HAVE 3 EYES!! You'll have a very unique conversation starter on your desk. And since Triops hatch in about 24 hours and almost double in size daily, expect your desk to be the center of the office as your co-workers stop by frequently to see how the Triops are doing. Go crazy, name the Triops after your co-workers. We did! And don't worry - these Triops are grown on special farms; you're not harming any ecosystems by growing an army of desk aliens.


    (by the way I do not work at ThinkGeek, I just love them, and sorry about the size of the pictures, but seriously check out all their geeky office products, there's so many different ways to nerd up and make your office fun)

    I once had a human brain in a jar in my office but they aren't easy to get your hands on these days, unless you can find a donor, but you could buy a prop one (also). Or a head in a jar, there are lots of fun Halloween toys you could use.

    More practically, think about some kind of air ioniser as they, the ones with a fan work best but might be a little too noisy and there are lots of alternatives (including light bulbs which is clever but perhaps not practical in this case). I've found one to be very useful with my allergies (something in my living room was setting me off but I could never pin it down, so I got a pretty cheap one from Lloyds Pharmacy, possibly this one, definitely this, so have become a bit of a fan of them - I did buy an ionising USB dongle but I'm not sure how effective that has been but I am considering a larger one for my bed room and possibly even a portable one. The trick to finding a good one is the negative ion output.
