So, about two weeks ago, my car got tapped on the rear bumper by someone else, going maybe seven miles an hour (it was a highway stop, and they didn't quite brake in time). I get out and inspect the damage, and find nothing serious - a very slight paint scratch, but not even a dent on the bumper (Jenny Jackrabbit's a pretty tough girl, for having a fiberglass body). On the other hand, the lady who bumped me took a bit of a hit, and since nothing all that bad happened to me and mine, and I'm not about to stress somebody out when they've already got some ugly car damage to deal with, I call no harm no foul, and she gives me a super-relieved smile and a short hug. All in all, good night.

However, about three days after the accident, I noticed that shortly after I start my car up and make a hard turn (either direction) I'm hearing a strange grinding noise from the back. After she's warmed up a bit, I don't hear the noise anymore, but anytime I turn after a cold start, the grinding comes back. I've inspected my car's undercarriage, but can't see anything loose or dented - exhaust system and muffler both look just fine. Now, I'm usually pretty good with cars, but I have no idea what that sound could be. So, I open up the question to the floor - anyone had something similar happen to them?

This is more an ontological question, one I've posed before and never received even close to a satisfying answer : What possible evolutionary advantage would derive from being a cat that resembled Hitler? Without putting too much thought into it, I would point out that house-cats weren't "evolved." They were domesticated and bred.

For further details, I'll defer to Wikipedia: house-cats are of the genus felis which includes small-sized wild cats like the African black-footed cat and the rare sand cat (last month a little sand kitten was born in a zoo in Israel, where none are left in the wild). The members of Felis, who share a common ancestor from 7 million years ago, basically are all very close to house-cats, and have different patterns of fur. None seem to have a 'stache.

The genetic mechanics of house-cat hair patterns are apparently of scientific interest and study, though. Wikipedia tells us that "the enzyme tyrosinase is needed to produce the dark pigment melanin and Burmese cats have a mutant form that is only active at low temperatures, resulting in color appearing only on the cooler ears, tail and paws." How about that! Color changing hair cat! Next up: Battle Damage Cat

The cat's that live and breed the most are probably the ones we domesticate and own. Now most of us don't own very many cats. If we get one, we have to pick and choose to some extent. And the one that will always catch our eye in the box of kittens being sold at the door of Walmart for a dollar or whatever, will be the one that has the most distinctive characteristics. Generally, 'tactical' in shotguns is a marketing term and not one of the more strict classifications, though as far as that goes it's not like there's anything that is a 'normal' type of shotgun, and most shotguns are actually more than one type depending how you look at it.

The common themes for a shotgun that is called tactical are (real experts please correct any errors):

-18-18.5" barrel which is basically the US legal limit for civilian shortness. You want a short-barreled shotgun when you want to use it inside or near buildings (where you are probably not out to shoot turkeys, unless you have a real different approach to Thanksgiving). Rifles and shotguns in original concept are way too long for urban use, really. Law enforcement and military will use that length or shorter. The magazine tube will usually extend the whole barrel length, which would give the gun a 7+1 round capacity, though here Benelli's marketed civilian 'tactical' gun caps it at 4+1 (it keeps the visual impression of a 7-round magazine, to match the military versions of the model).

-Manufacturer included rail for putting on a fancy sight. Since it's a marketing term, it's about whether the manufacture is laying the groundwork for the end user's excesses.

-Pump action. Some may also be semi-automatic, meaning they can load the next shot without pumping, though they will still have a pump because not all compatible loads are powerful enough to work the auto mechanism -- but a plain old pump action can still be marketed as 'tactical' anyway, i.e. the Remington 870 Tactical.

-Pistol grip (as opposed to no hangy-downy part behind the trigger) with fixed stock, usually, but neither is strict. Law enforcement buying Benelli's 'tactical' shotgun, which is actually the US army's currently designated M4 shotgun, won't want a fixed stock, they will have a fold-up.

So yeah, in the show if they were using Benelli and tactical in the same sentence they just meant this guy right heah

Is there any specific thing you're tying to do or any specific program your trying to use? Really, the best way to learn it, as with anything, is to just play around and look up things to help when you get stuck.

So, I'm re-reading Neal Stephenson's essay on OS, "In the Beginning Was the Command Line," because for some reason Neal always makes me feel better about things. I'm at the part where he's describing a Unix program that allows you to run Windows (and, presumably, any other OS) as a program within Unix. Pretty cool, right? Well, the question occurs to me, why would you want to do that? If you're already using Unix or Linux, chances are good that you don't have a whole lot of use or care for commercial OSes, UNLESS, those OSes can do things (namely, run programs) which your native OS cannot.

But, an operating system is nothing more than a graphics interface (a metaphor, as Stephenson calls it) between the human typing and the bits flipping. The underlying processes are the same, users just perceive and interact with them differently... right?

BUT, why then do some programs only run on Windows, or only run on Macs, or can't run on either? Shouldn't any computer code be able to be opened by any other computer code?

In Linux there's an application called WINE which stands for WINE is not an emulator. It allows you to run Windows programs because it acts as a translation interface between how Windows does things and how Linux/Unix does things.

A metaphor for this would be that different operating systems are speaking different languages with different (although often similar) syntaxes and vocabularies but using the same sounds.

If Windows didn't have all it's drivers and doodads, then everyone who wrote a program for Windows, especially one that has to work with multiple solid objects inside or attached to the computer, would have to write to the hardware, in other words do as much work as back in the day when computers all just did one program at a time. All the levels of an OS from kernel upward are basically extensions and elaborations of this service/toolkit metaphor.

You will not see popular games released for Linux because Linux is Open Source and to some code is a precious commodity. Classically there were few 'Windows' programs for Mac because the way that Mac's interface communicated with the Kernel was night and day from how Windows did. What changed? Intel. Now that the Mac CPU (BPU) is designed by Intel the communication have become similar and the software giants are seeing MAC as a viable financial gain.

Ok. I've got one. I have a question for those familiar with the fucked up system of welfare and social services in the US.

Just three years ago, I started my Disability application living with my Aunt in NJ. A few months ago, I started crashing in NYC out of a necessity to be more mobile. There ended up being a room opening where I was crashing, which I took, and became a part time roommate. I had no income, but used the last of my student loans to pay a fraction of the rent, borrowing from others, all on the blind hope that my hearing would be judged favorably, and I'd be able to pay everything back and be stable. I could not change my address because if I were a NY resident, my Disability case would be transfered to NY and would be put to the end of the waiting line, which would mean an ADDITIONAL TWO YEARS to the 2.5 years it'd already taken to get a hearing date. So, I kept my address as NJ, most of my belongings remained at my Aunt's.

The hearing was had, and I told the judge that I still had my things in NJ, but had been crashing in NY. That I wasn't paying my rent, that I had to start doing so come September. The judge decided in my favor. It's been over a month now, and I had to go to a NJ social security office for my Disability payment figuring. I showed her my sublet-lease for my NYC place, and she said that it would make things more complicated and she'd keep my address as NJ. So, my payment amounts were determined under the assumption that I live with my Aunt and pay no rent.... but then, Disability is an ability-based program, not a need-based program, right? So, does it matter?

I went to the Union County NJ Welfare office directly after, told the fellow there the exact same information, and he cancelled my case and told me that I live in NY. He told me to go to the NY Welfare office the next day and start a case there.

So. I went to the closest Welfare office, which was 15 minutes away in Brooklyn. I arrived at 4:30. I was seen at 8:05. They told me I had to go to a Queens County office, and that once THERE I could get an expedited Food Stamp card and maybe some rent assistance. The next day (today) I went to a Queens office. I got there too late, but asked the people at the fornt desk all my questions. There, they told me that I couldn't apply for a new Food Stamp Card until the new month, AND the guy said that I should not change my address until I start to get my money. That it's too complicated, and that they'd be asking me where I got my money for my rent. (Last semester I used the last of my student loan excess. This semester, I got less money and now owe to my school.)

BUT.

If I'm paying rent, wouldn't that change the amount of money I'm getting? Are my student loans considered income? I mean, If my student loans don't cover my tuition, and if I don't PERSONALLY get any money from my loans and it all goes to the school, that's... ok, right? They keep asking me all accusatively about how I afford my rent if I don't work. Is everyone trying to give me LESS money, and directing me the wrong way? Given all of this, can I still get Supplemental Security Income in addition? Can I get emergency rent aid?

Everyone keeps telling me I'm being too honest.

But I've got like $10 to my name, and a food stamp card that's going to crap out at the end of the month, with rent to pay and utilities, and school starting.

The reason that there are few commercial games on Linux is that very few people use Linux outside of professional environments. Game companies tried selling games on Linux, and nobody bought them. Also, apparently, according to my boyfriend, it's possible to find cheap or even free legal assistance. It'll take a little longer, but better than not having them at all.

Otherwise, I don't know anything about how to get disability. My boyfriend knows a little bit about it cos he was trying to get his ex on disability so that she would finally stop mooching off of his insurance and sign the divorce papers, and ended up doing all the leg work for her. Have you contacted your county Bar Association? In NJ, they keep lists of attorneys who will give an initial consult for free or for a nominal rate. NY City may have something similar. Another possible source of referrals is a law school legal aid clinic.

There are also attorneys who handle SSDI cases on contingency. I couldn't give you a recommendation, since the office that handled my case years ago is no longer in business. (I was denied, but I didn't pay a cent.)

If that's the case, you'll probably end up contacting Kirsten Gillibrand or Charles Schumer . As a word of advice, find their constituent office (the one that deals directly with the public), because the others might be outreach offices (ones who go out to the public, and spread the good word) who will redirect you.

Also, don't mail their DC offices. Luckily, my landlord boarded up the windows a couple days ahead of the storm. I'm glad he did, we suffered little to no damage compared to others who did not.

We stocked up on some food, and some water (both distilled and tap). Our area was just outside of the evacuation area, though we would not have evacuated anyways. We were just outside of Galveston, where Ike actually made landfall, but close enough for the Hurricane to do damage, shut down roads, drop power lines, etc.

What we did right: Stock up on food, water, hand-crank radio, not panic. We filled all our vehicles up with gas ahead of time, and any gas containers we had for reserves. What few gas stations are open afterwards will have long lines, and they will run out of gas fast.

There were about 6 of us that crashed in my house, that's a good number to have cooking & working on repairs, etc. We only were out of power for maybe 36 hours, compared to most others, who were out for close to a week.

We did keep loaded firearms handy; there was looting, but not at my house. During the night of no power & no a/c, we slept on the front porch with shotguns visible, and had no problems. We could see looters pass us by.

One roommate couldn't handle the aftermath. No power, he got bored easily. He also was upset he couldn't watch baseball (I think the Astros were @ Chicago) and was very frustrated. Keep people busy. Give them things to do during the storm/aftermath.

Once some of the roads cleared, we made little excursions out. Helped my buddy's parents get trees off of their house, use chainsaw to clear tree limbs from the street, etc.

One important move we made was to look for businesses that had lost power, like the local Spec's, the mega liquor store. They had an extensive meat & cheese section, and were selling it off fast as the coolers got warmer. We bought a lot of stuff for very cheap and ate well.

Oh yeah, keep cash on hand, as nobody will take credit cards for anything. That's all I can think of for now. Me and my friend's favorite game was to watch the news, and take a shot every they said, "hunker down."

Do take Greasemonkey's advice and get flashlights, bottled water, canned food, etc.

Do also take Gov Spy's advice, and get some guns and cash. My area wasn't bad, but near Crime Pine Hills, it got pretty bad.

The day after (depending on if you had power during the storm) go through your entire fridge, and remove anything that could go rotten without power.

If you live in a house, go through and remove any and all dead branches, so that: a. During, there's not too many hitting your place of well-being. b. There's not too much cleanup afterwards.

Make sure you either have: a lady friend, booze, a electronic mobile device with lots of power or some really good books, to keep you entertained during the storm.

If you have pets, put them in the bathroom or if its sealed, the kitchen. My first dog shit everywhere, and ran around barking like a manic, when he heard the first storm. That made clean up a little easier.

The worst part for me, was the first storm, since the power got knocked out. Thankfully, one of the managers for FPL (Florida Power and Light Company), lived on my block and get the power back the day after the storm. Now I don't believe anyone at a benefits agency gets a bonus for turning people down, but it often feels that way. My Dad works for a local advocacy and seems to deal with a lot of disability benefits cases and it always seems to get rather farcical. One woman had one leg (no prosthetic) and a host of other medical problems that meant she struggled to get out of a chair but her assessment seemed to describe a completely different woman who could practically jog across the room, defying both doctor's statements and reality - the only way the person assessing her could have reached those conclusions is by not seeing her and making it all up. Almost all the long-running cases he deals with involve people having to get their heads down and keep fighting, which is where he comes in as it can be dispiriting and people give up and he can help plot a route through all the red tape, laying out the case as succinctly and clearly as possible (he has no special training but a good eye for sorting through forms and the blanket of paperwork).

So, whatever the motivation, they do try and make it hard for people to claim and there can often be cock-ups (thanks to them having a much larger workload than they can deal with), so people do often need support in fighting to get what they are due. There have been plenty of good suggestions here to follow, just keep your chin up and keep at it. I can't, for example, imagine that if you are granted benefits in one area and then you move, that you then get nothing again and have to go to the back of the queue again - there must be a system to allow for this, and for people to adjust what they are claiming as their circumstances change. The problem is finding the right angle of attack to take and that is where a second pair of eyes can come in handy.

Edit: I just thought of something else. Does she like vintage/retro clothes? I don't know how it is in Iceland, but here in the US (especially where I live) there are great Vintage and Thrift stores. It will probably take more looking, but the coat is certain to be more unique (an potentially kinder to your wallet). A friend of mine is a programmer, creating software and writing code for a variety of clients for a variety of commercial applications. Not all of these clients use the same operating systems. The advantage of being able to run one OS within an other gives you the opportunity to test the software on the OS the client will be using. This was particularly useful when he was working with XP writing programmes for Vista simply because Vista would render graphics differently affecting the formatting of various screens, in some cases making them much wider than intended. (stoopid Vista).

The good thing about about Linux is that it requires much less space and processor power to run than any Windows product and is fully compatible with your various open source products like Open Office, Firefox, Total Commander, etc... (which we all use, right? Use them!) making it the ideal OS for older NetBooks with smaller processors and the smaller solid state drive (my old ASUS Eeepc with Linux and 2GB RAM is super fast)

In Fact, (and somewhat veering from the topic) on my main PC the only windows products I use are XP and Solitare. Everything else is either open source or absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft. As for Apple: I do not now and never will own a single one of their products. Screw them.

Kingsburg is south of Fresno and is a fun touristy town centered around the Swedish immigrants that moved there. Actually, I have some relatives who started out there before they moved to either LA or Oakland.

In Fresno itself, places that are fairly close to 99 (South to North): downtown is ... hit and miss. They've been trying to rejuvinate it a bit but it's still bits and pieces. However, I think there are some good restaurants and cafes that are open during the day (and sometimes the evening). I know more gallery/art studio stuff, if for some reason you wanted to check that kind of stuff out.

Tower District is a fun area. There's lots of good restaurants and cafes (and tea shops!), most of which are on Olive Ave. There's also the Tower theater and a fairly decent photography gallery (Spectrum).

In the Van Ness Extension/Fig Garden area is Piccadilly Inn (on Shaw, near Van Ness) which is in the northwest part of town - so "nicer" and more expensive. Don't bother with those dollar store brushes where you get a whole set in a plastic case for three bucks. They are a fucking waste of your time and money. (And this goes for all dollar store art supplies.) Synthetics are fine for acrylic painting, and they're only a few bucks apiece at Curry's. I use a cheap Japanese brand called Art Basics, or Windsor & Newton brushes if I can afford them.

The one brush I find absolutely indispensable for acrylic painting is the fitch or narrow flatbrush. The flat end is perfect for pushing around the thicker bodied acrylic paint, and it's extremely versatile for edge work, texturing or just filling large spaces. Filberts are flatbrushes with rounded ends, and can be used for almost any painting application at a pinch. At minimum I'd suggest purchasing a range of both straight flatbrushes and filberts, starting at 1/4", then 1/2", 3/4" and 1". There's no need to rush and buy them all in one go.

Round brushes I tend to use only in the small sizes, for adding lines and other fine detail. You could do worse than picking up a few assorted rounds, to get the feel of them.

Don't be shy about picking up new, interesting-looking brushes when you're browsing the art store. Most artists end up with a pretty big collection this way.

2) Paint.

I posted a guide to acrylic paints in this thread a couple of years back.

3) Canvas.

I generally buy the Paintwell prestretched primed canvases when I'm making something I'm planning on hanging at home or selling. They won't break the bank (between $20 and $100 depending on size, and you can sometimes score them much cheaper at a sale), but I wouldn't buy one to practice on - grab yourself some plywood at Home Depot, which they will cut for you for free, give it two coats of primer (white gesso is the standard, but you can use leftover house paint if you have it lying around) and you're good to go. Plywood is perfectly acceptable for professional pieces as well, but it's heavy.

4) Easel and palette.

You can either work flat on the tabletop if you throw a plastic sheet over the table and are careful about drips, or pick up a cheap folding easel for forty bucks. Those little plastic trays from the supermarket (the ones they sell cherry tomatoes in) are perfect for mixing paint, or just use a piece of plywood as a mixing surface.

Some stores have some pretty solid cheap sets too.

As for paints/colors, I'm going to give you a fairly traditionalist approach here:

First thing you need to know is a really basic crash course in how to use color. Everything has a WARM and a COOL tone. Very few "true" reds, blues, or yellows exist. There will always be cool shades of red and warm shades of red, cool shades of blue, warm shades of blue, etc. I can't find a tremendously good explanation of this online, but here are some color wheels. Some of them will probably look familiar:







And here's a pretty basic color theory tutorial. It's neat! And long, but broken up into little digestible bits. This one is a little more difficult to get through, but so far, great.

Also, distribution on warm to cool:


HOWEVER! When buying paints, it's rare that you'll come across a true red, a true, blue, a true green, or a true yellow. By that, I mean that colors lean cool or lean warm. Reds, while always warm, vary on the spectrum from cool to warm like any other color.

What I mean by this:

Reds:
Alizarin crimson (cool!)
Cadmium red medium (warm!)

Blues:
Ultramarine (warm!)
Prussian blue (cool!)

Greens:
Chrome Oxide Green (warm!)
Viridian (cool!)

Yellows:
Cadmium yellow medium (warm!)
Hansa yellow light (cool!)


WHAT THIS MEANS: a yellow that leans cool, when mixed with a red that leans warm, will be duller than a warm yellow with a warm red. That's because a cool yellow has a little bit of green in it, and when you mix red and green (complements, opposites on the color wheel), you get brown.

If I were you I'd get the following paints (acrylic, cheap as you please since you're just starting out):

Yellows:
Cadmium Yellow medium
Hansa Yellow light

Earth tones:
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna

Blues:
Ultramarine
Prussian Blue

Reds:
Alizarin Crimson
Cadmium Red Medium

Greens:
Chrome Oxide Green
Viridian Green

Other:
A purple (if you want. These are tricky to mix, no matter what you do)
Titanium White

IN order to get your grasp on mixing colors, I'd recommend screwing around with just some paint on paper first, painting your own color wheels, mixing colors, etc.

It is going to take a bit to get things moving and you'll have to price lower than you think you are worth initially but if you get permission to post the finished commissions in your DA gallery that will help build momentum as people can see what work you do and for how much. Make sure you add your work to relevant groups, so it is easier for people to find your work.

Price? Difficult to say, because as well as style and ability it depends on size and complexity. So for example a couple of Tharg's droids have been offering A4, single character and they quote prices: Dylan Teague and PJ Holden. There is also a general discussion about getting commissions from droids which quotes some broad ball park figures for commissions, even if you'd need to negotiate a final price. Obviously, you'd not be able to charge as much as them, but it could be a start. Years ago someone told me they swapped their florescent lights with daylight balanced one to make it a friendly environment. So I am going to try swapping them out next week.

More practically, think about some kind of air ioniser as they, the ones with a fan work best but might be a little too noisy and there are lots of alternatives (including light bulbs which is clever but perhaps not practical in this case). I've found one to be very useful with my allergies (something in my living room was setting me off but I could never pin it down, so I got a pretty cheap one from Lloyds Pharmacy, possibly this one, definitely this, so have become a bit of a fan of them - I did buy an ionising USB dongle but I'm not sure how effective that has been but I am considering a larger one for my bed room and possibly even a portable one. I second the Moorcock recommendations - he invented the term multiverse and his Eternal Champions sequence pretty much defines it. I also enjoyed the World of Tiers series round about the same time I was devouring Moorcock (no pun intended), and you've probably already read His Dark Materials.

In films The One makes good use of the concept (best to catch it on TV though ;) ).

If you are looking for a bit of theory to go with that fiction, then Michio Kaku is your man (my favourite theoretical physicist) and his Parallel Worlds lays out the science in an easy to digest form. I hate the word 'man' and I hate the word 'woman' -- they don't mean anything I would ever use in a sentence! More importantly, they don't fit as descriptions of 18 - 33 year-olds AT ALL. It's obvious that in modern times the concept of a young man/woman is considered as practically a different race of human as a middle-aged or old person. This is why in the early 80s when young people were buying Rolexes the term 'Yuppies' was born and not the term 'Uppies'.

Usually I end up wanting to reach for the word "girl" for "female young person." Then I realize, 'now this sentence looks creepy and/or unaware of what an adult female is.' This is how serious the inadequacy of the word "woman" is -- I find it easier to use the different word that also includes "seven year old humans selling cookies at Walgreens."

There are shorthands for "young __" but every one of them is part of the "American Dictionary of Beer or Taco Advertisements" -- e.g. bro, lady, dude, chica, etc. Related conflict: the actual phrase "young adult" implies teenagers.

To answer my own question I would make a guess that the vast difference in status between non-old adults and all other adults is extremely new. Culturally, the norm for forever in not just the anglosphere but languages we like to borrow from, and especially for females* is that you are a child until you are 16 and then you are being married to a baron who has a white mustache and shingles.

*I spent two minutes deciding what to type there!

In terms of what to call a significant other: Girl/Boyfriend is about as serious as it gets with the under-30s. If he's not just "a guy that I see" or "someone I've been dating," but an expected part of my life/plans/social-duties, it's kind of a Big Deal. Alternatives....
Partner: Not actually that bad. More serious than "date," less serious than official-sounding things (e.g. fiancee, common-law, live-in, mother-of-my-children, etc). The problem is that it's often used as a PC way to announce your homosexuality, so there's work to be done before it gets acceptance as a generic term. You could, of course, do that work.
Significant Other: Weirdly formal, as unsubtle as "partner." "SO" is a good casual version, but you can only use the written form. Don't say "Ess-Oh" out loud. Just don't.
Sweetheart: "My sweetheart?" Really? Ew.
Other Half: Has weird associations with "the ol' ball and chain." "Better Half" is cheesy. So is "Best Friend," which, yes, I have heard. "Life Mate" is too bromance-y.
My Old Lady: I actually like this one, though I bet there aren't a lot of women that would. I think it's cute, has a '70s-biker-gang air. Too bad "My Old Man" refers to one's father. I needed a new pair a few months ago, and I was more than a little reluctant to go to a high street opticians, seeing as my last pair had cost me some £300. My current pair I got from the same opticians (Specsavers), for a little under £100. Still not cheap, but I'm glad I went to an actual flesh and blood person in the end, rather than buying online.

The place I went to checked that my frames fit properly, and measured where the focal point was in my new lenses compared with my old ones. They also checked that my lenses would work properly in my frame of choice, made some recommendations on the shape of frame I should go for, and made sure I got my NHS complex lense discount. I personally swear by having one prime (fixed focal point, but better apeture etc) lens and one telephoto lens (my current setup). Also, avoid getting a kit lens if ever possible. Poor quality glass means more chromatic abberation, less tack sharp, and just... not so great. Also, digital means flaws are more obvious. Also, with Nikon, any Nikon lens from any era should fit in the lens mount, meaning, if you want, you can get an older non-digital lens. Again, digital lenses are usually higher quality because the glass needs to be a better quality to be good enough for digital. Also, you will want to find out what the crop factor on the D40 is. I have a D80 and the crop factor makes it that a 35mm lens works like a 50mm (not wide angle, not telephoto, nice average perspective lens). You can also get an import lens, which is cheaper. Also, check out www.bhphotovideo.com. I grew up in New Orleans, but haven't lived there in many years. Check with the hotel that you stay in to make sure that you're going to safe places.

Go to Audubon Zoo - it's a great zoo. Check on the docks near Decatur Street if you can still take a riverboat to the zoo. There used to be one that took you from the French Quarter to the back entrance.

Take the Streetcar along St. Charles Ave from Canal Street to Hana Sushi or Camellia Grill. They're both near where St. Charles turns into Carrollton, and it's a nice trip along the avenue.

Check out Capdeville for me. An old friend of mine is a chef there.

Catch some music at Tipitina's. F and M Patio Bar used to be a great bar - I hear that it still is.

See Napoleon's death mask at The Cabildo.

Magazine Street has some little cafes, odd antiques, and galleries and is nice to walk around.

Mardi Gras is great. Mostly if you stay out of the Quarter. Get a spot Uptown for the parades the weekend leading up to Fat Tuesday. That's where the natives go (although some will head to the Quarter, too). You are going to run into higher than normal hotel prices and lots of places will be busy. It's the high season. If you want to see a parade though - go for St. Patrick's Day. There's usually a parade in the Irish Channel that Saturday near the day. It's not Mardi Gras, but still good.

Other places in Louisiana: Lake Charles is really nice. Great seafood. Oberlin is a very, very small Cajun town with gas station crawfish. My dad was from there. Amite has an Oyster Festival. Covington has a lot of craft art stuff. Abita Springs is where Abita Beer is created, and they have a tasting room.

#camera @trini - I don't think a shitty kit lens zoom (what's the usual Nikon, 18-55mm?) is that bad of a way to start out when you're learning, especially if it's basically free with the body. But primes, especially old ones, are definitely something I've fallen in love with.

That said, I believe that while all Nikon lenses will mount to current Nikon DSLRs, the rear element of some lenses will interfere with the mirror, which is something to watch out for.
