Just got in from finishing topping off supplies, in Boston. The real stuff isn't supposed to start til the morning, could still be a Category 1.

I'm figuring Worst Case for me is up to 3 days of no power, internet or cable. There are a bunch of ominous trees in the neighborhood that I expect not to be there anymore come Monday.

We have gas heat and hot water, so unless the basement is completely flooded, we should be able to ride it out OK without leaving the house.

Things are still calm in New York. From the radar it looks like we've still got a few hours ahead of us. But I've already watched a movie -- treating the day like the hurricane's already here.

The subway is right outside my house and the MTA employees have been driving around the city putting plastic tarps over the grates and weighing them down with sandbags. Not sure how effective this will be in the long term..

I'm in Manhattan and thus far, it looks like 4am.
There are some stores closed, but several bodegas, organic marts and bars are still open. Even my Duane Reade was open, which allowed me to buy the incredibly important provisions of a giant bag of salt & vinegar chips. I had several beers at the bar down the street, since they were having happy hour. The owner said he planned to be open until 2am, since he lived just a few blocks down. Hell, even the 99cent pizza place is open and a bunch of people were enjoying the sidewalk cafe's brunch this afternoon.

I've seen a few windows taped up, but not many. I didn't, since I don't really think that does anything the security grates won't handle. My plan is to sleep as far away from the windows as possible if the winds sound like they're really terrible. I'm just on the border of the flood zones, but I'm also a 4th floor walk up. Since I just moved in, I had to buy a ton of groceries Friday evening anyways (the fable of the grasshopper & the ant was especially relevant to me after I spent all week partying with friends and left the shopping to the last minute) & plan on cooking a bunch of stuff that should last a few days with very little refrigeration, but that + making sure I have my sketchbooks is about the extent of my preparation. I'm really not all that worried.

I lived through Hurricane Andrew as a child. A Cat 1 does not scare me anywhere near as much as a Cat 5.

Only sad point is the fact that transportation is dead and thus, I have no access to my Brooklyn bound friends who are having awesome parties. NYC survives everything by getting drunk, it seems.

I have been cooking up a storm as well. If there's one thing I love, it's finding excuses to buy awesome things and make food.
Bought an eggplant, which is my ultimate apocalypse vegetable and fried it up in slices to eat on its own with tomato sauce if the power goes out or to mix into foods if i can keep cooking (I have a selection of bread, noodles, rice and eggs). Also got a good cheese that can keep for days, am boiling eggs and basically precooking a bunch of meals to store.

I also bought donuts because, really, even in an apocalypse I want something sweet.

Anyone else been planning foods out besides canned beans & tuna?

I'm on Cape Cod and it looks like we may only get the edge of it, so I'm not too worried. Mostly pissed that the weekend in a tent with my daughter we've been planning all summer is blown away. It was going to be her first camping trip.

We lose power if a fly sneezes, so I expect to be without for at least a little while. The food in the fridge should last a few days, with a few things pre-cooked to be safe. I still have a few pork buns from my trip to China town yesterday (which, now that I'm thinking about them, may not last 'till the storm gets here. Yum!), a full tank of gas in the car and some extra bottled water.

My kid went to her mom's a day early, just to be safe. I think this might be the first time since we separated over two years ago that I gave up a scheduled night. Totally sucks, but if shit does get hairy, I would rather her not be out on the roads.

Now I just need to keep myself entertained. My plan for tomorrow, when it's supposed to hit here, is to work on music. I've been composing the orchestral bits for a song lately. By co-incidence, it's called Storm, so him hoping things will be inspirational.

Stay safe everybody.

My girlfriend is somewhere in Connecticut, Wilton or Bridgeport or something, just flew in for a funeral on Monday. Do they cancel funerals? I hope not. That just sounds odd...

So we're trying to stay in touch.

She's the one that held my hand through Ike down here in Houston, which bounced between a 4 and a 2, not sure what size it was when it hit Houston, but it was actually kind of fun. I feel bad for people who were out power for a month, or died and stuff though. For the most part it was the only time I felt any sort of community with my neighbors. We all came outside and helped each other clear the streets, yards of debris. Never spoke to any of those people before or after that.

Wishing all of you luck as you "hunker down"...

@glukkake - I'ma try to do some of that later myself. I have tomatoes and cauliflower that need to be turned into marinated salads that wouldn't mind sitting on the counter for a day or so.

I'm all set with the neighborhood togetherness thing, honestly. We get that every winter when we try to figure out where to put the snow, so all the cars can park, and we establish and defend our dug-out parking spots with markers. That really brings the neighborhood together.

I was just thinking that the perfect disaster would be one that caused a lot of inconvenience and paralysis, but nothing too really dangerous or anything. Like having mono as a kid. A plague of frogs, for instance, would make driving virtually impossible, but more or less just force you to stay put and take life easier for a while...

Apparently the eye of the storm is now passing just east of NYC (1300 UTC) so hopefully the worst is over there. As some people predicted, Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm as it made landfall in NY.

I'm wondering how the storm surge played out. All I've seen so far: CCN/Weather Underground is reporting some overflow of the East River into Lower Manhattan, and about foot of water in the Battery from the Hudson. Characterised as "seeping" not rushing.

Something I read yesterday said that the magnitude of surge is tied to the state of the tide and, if I'm reading this from NOAA correctly, it's high tide right now. So the current amount of flooding might be as bad as it gets.

Edit: Yep, per that graph, water levels are dropping quite steeply now.

Also, some footage of Manhattan from AP:

Not sure where all of it is, but the images of the city lit up but practically deserted are worth a look.

I left a window wide open until 2am and didn't even notice. The blinds didn't rattle and I couldn't hear the rain, I only noticed because I wanted to peep out and see how the storm was doing (and why it was so quiet).

Someone suggested that if you stocked up on a ton of non-perishables and don't think you'll use them now that the danger is over, to donate them to a local shelter/pantry to help others, which I think is a damn fine idea.

Yup, it is basically like any other day after a late summer storm in NYC, except that everything is closed because the subway is shut down. I biked all over Lower Manhattan looking for damage and saw a few downed trees surrounded by cops and picture takers. Debris on the East River bike path suggests minor overflowing of the banks but all is seemingly intact and people seem somewhat disappointed. We were promised a goddam apocalypse! Everyone seems grudgingly grateful to be deprived of bragging rights and i am certain some anger is going to be directed at our mayor for his completely batshit over-the-top overreaction.

I turned around and came home, as I have all services running.

Good thing our boss decided to save money on that datacenter by self-hosting all our stuff.

On the way back, I saw a lot of tree damage all along the side streets, but basically no flooding anywhere inland in the Boston area, and all the major roads were passable down through the Blue Hills.

I've gone through winter storms which left my neighborhood had to go without power for extended periods of time, so I sympathize with fellow Whitechapelers. Also glad that nobody seems to be hurt. Though I wonder whatever happened to Oddbill?

Meanwhile, certain GOP politicians are smelling political opportunity in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann sees Irene and the other recent natural disasters as a supposed sign from God to rein in federal spending. (Anybody seriously believe she was joking?) While House Republicans see Irene federal disaster relief as an opportunity to blackmail more federal spending cuts.

Despite the dire apocalyptic predictions of the local news media, New York City itself dodged a Bullet and got away relatively unscathed this time, most of the major damage here and in all along the northeast was due to heavy flooding and high winds.
I'm in Queens, outside of all the Evacuation Zones, but my Grandmother lives in Evacuation Yellow Zone B - ironically she was taken to my Mom's house in Evacuation Green Zone C. My uncle lost power in his house Valley Stream ( I myself rode out the storm drunk on Jack Daniels hahaha.)
I took the day off, but I have to come into work tonight ( I'm glad the MTA is running again ).
Anyway, I really hope that everyone out there made out Ok.
I'm glad Irene wasn't any worse.

Unfortunately hurricane season doesn't end for another month.....

Where I live in Cambridge, MA appeared relatively unscathed other than some downed trees. I fully expected to at least be in a blackout since they've often happened during weaker storms and last year's blizzard on my part of the grid.

I hope folks in the areas more seriously hit by the storm stay safe.
