So it's September, and the run-up to the Christmas season means the shelves are going to be filled to bursting with a mind-numbing overload of Sheer Damn Awesome!ness. My personal leanings are more towards smaller downloadable things lately, because they fit my time much better than 80-hour RGP Epicquest or Online FPS With Half-Hearted Single Player Campaign. But hell, let's talk about all of it anyway. :)

Now playing- Enslaved. I think I got it for $15 and it's good fun. A bit simple and overly scripted, with a camera that really really really wants you to look at what it tells you, but sometimes (more rarely for me lately) that's a nice break.

Serious Sam DD- Side-scrolling shooty mad goodness. It's pleasantly mad and oozing testosterone.

Trackmania 2: Canyon- Only played a bit of it so far, just because it's not really out yet and the online multiplayer is all that's available. Stunt-track racing doesn't get any better, period.

I also beat Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet a week or two ago. Here's a link to the review I wrote, if anyone wants to give it a read.

Tons of great stuff on the way for September- The Binding of Isaac, Dead Island, Hard Reset, Ico/Shadow of Colossus, maybe Warhammer: Space Marine. And the Minecraft 1.8 update is going to kill me, I can tell. :)

So what are you obsessing over, or planning to lose a significant chunk of your life to? Or, for that matter, knee-deep in the creation of?

Ah...the old video game thing! Because of my obsessive addictive nature i virtually wasted 6 years of my life on the PS2.I look back now and just think about the insanity of it all..desperately searching every nook and cranny of GTA looking for packages of floating spinning coke.

Spending weeks+ on RPGs levelling up til I was the meanest
S.O.B to grind my way through hobbit land.

Scaring the shit out of meself playing jap zombie games like Forbidden Siren.

It became all I ever wanted to do..food,sex and even drugs where secondary to me. I will never forget being focused using dexamfetamine(speed) to complete final boss fights on Metal Gear etc.

I've got an XBOX 360 yet hardly ever use it now. It's not that i don't want to..since stopping using the dex i've got the attention span of a kid in school who evil teachers decide to put in the special class. They did that to me in infant school.Fuck,I really enjoyed it too...I felt like The Joker having the time of his life in Arkham.

For me gaming is cool. But if you get to the state I did then it is definitely time to take stock and say "What the fuck!!!".

Take care young ones!

 Just sticking to the PSP...
Just finished Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. A little cutesy but heaps of fun beat-em-up/RPG.
Just starting Valkyria Chronicles 2, which I guess you'd call tactical combat. Pretty cool so far, but I'm still learning it.
Next up is Lord of Arcana, which I'm hoping is either like God of War or possibly Dynasty Warriors, which is incidentally excellent in itself, set during the 3 Kingdoms period of ancient China (2nd/3rd century AD).

Like Lazarus I'm giving my PSP a lot of time recently, had a fit of nostalgia and grabbed Final Fantasy 7, 8, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill, and Blood Omen. The controls on the original Silent Hill are pretty bad, but the atmosphere is still amazing and creepy.

On the PS3 I'm occasionally wandering the Mojave wastes, seems like I can't go a couple months without wandering around in the Fallout world.

Got Deus Ex and loving it much more than I thought it would. I missed the original, but the new one is hitting all my gaming sweet spots: Stealth, RPG elements, good writing and an engrossing story.

Plus it is really pretty:

You know, that feeling you get when you're playing a new game, and you like it, but it hasn't really clicked with you yet? Well, now I wish I'd gotten a little more sleep last night, but yeah, haven't had that feeling in quite a while.

Now I'm waiting for Dead Island. I highly suggest the XBox Arcade game called "Half Minute Hero". It's an RPG / puzzle game but each game in it (there's 62 or something in total) only gives you 30 seconds to complete the game. (Buy items, talk to people, do side quests, level grind, kill the big bad guy). Thankfully you can pray to the Time Goddess to reset the time, but it costs more and more money each time. It's a glorious game, and has a demo of the few levels / games.
It was originally on the PSP but a couple of weeks ago it went up for sale on the XBLA for only 10 bucks or so. Well, well worth the money.

Everyone should download the demo and let me know what you think.

 @ Ren Thing;

I've found that the enjoyment of an MMO depends upon how they cater to which camp you fall into: The "MMOs are less boring versions of Second Life" camp, or the "MMOs are bigger versions of what's on my Nintendo" camp.

CO doesn't seem to cater to the first group as much as other MMOs. You can do 99% of the missions without being in a group just fine, and you're not grubbing around killing random bad guys for resources to build some actually useful armor for your character. I mean, you can do it, but it doesn't seem to be too important to the game and really is optional unlike the fake-optional of games like LoTRO.

Since you're Gold, the whole game is available to you. I say give it a spin if you got the free time.

Unless, you know, you prefer mining.

Recently got a new laptop, so I've been neglecting my 360 for the PC.

Been playing Borderlands GOTY (it was ridiculously cheap on Steam a week or so ago), League of Legends (I really just need to uninstall it until I have no other games to play because it is fucking addictive and at the same time it feels like a waste because there is so little progress to be made), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I'm not sure how I feel about DE:HR yet. It's like the game doesn't want me to play it, because every time I get really stuck into it and start enjoying it it crashes on me (black screen cutscene crash for those playing at home). Got so pissed off with the first boss battle (it's 2011, can't we just get rid of boss battles in any non-arcade-style game?), and with the fact that the game crashed when I finally beat him, that I took two days off from the game and haven't really been feeling it since then. I've played a few more hours, but more because I spent good money on it and I should play it, rather than because I want to.

I'm not really interested in any of the upcoming titles (no new release I'm waiting on until ME3 I think), so I'm sure I'll have time to get into it and enjoy it before something else starts vying for my attention.

I've also recently picked up "Elevator Action Deluxe" for my PS3, and am seriously enjoying both the remake and the original arcade game that gets bundled with it. I also picked of King of Fighters 95 as a PS3 download, as that used to be one of my favorite fighting games, once upon a time.

Also, I've been seriously enjoying KINGDOM RUSH, a free tower-defense game on Armorgames.com.

Non-final verdict on Dead Island- great fun! It's horribly flawed in many ways, not the least of which is the way the interface feels so sluggish and un-intuitive, but when you target the arm of an attacking zombie and slice it right the hell off, then kick it in the face to have it stagger to the floor, where you can decapitate it, all is forgiven. It's a giant gratuitous gory mess of a game, and I'm having a great time so far.

Also, apparently the PC version (which I'm playing due to an unbreakable preference for anything FPS to be on PC, where my trackball and keyboard provide perfect controls) had a dev version released with all sorts of probelms, most of which got patched out after a very rocky start. So despite some initial launch-day problems it's working fine now.

And I beat Enslaved before starting, so now I can feel good about not adding another mostly-done game to my giant pile of unfinished shame.

Well I know it's an MMORPG, but I don't know much about the combat system (which from what I hear can be altered however you like; so if you want to go from fire magic to guns, you can) Though Funcom likes to talk about their lack of levels and character classes. I'm actually really enjoying the Space Marine multiplayer (for the most part). When the players on your team are actually using the classes and weapons tactically, it's pretty awesome. When they're blatantly ignoring how the game is balanced, and the other team is combining their talents properly, you get steamrolled over and over again and it's spectacularly frustrating.

I haven't bothered with the pre-1.8 update, mostly so I can keep playing on the multiplayer server I use but also because I like my bugs squashed first. Having said that- how are you finding it? It sounds to me like the 1.8 update is part 1 of 2 in terms of bringing more Game to Minecraft, and while what they've got is nice, it won't really come into its own until the 1.9 update completes it. NPCs in the villages, the animal breeding/raising, exp having a use, etc. The new terrain goodies mean I'll happily generate a new world to play in, but 1.8 really seems like its biggest impact is going to be for the groundwork it lays for 1.9.

Clearly, I have a new purpose in life: dynamite!
There ares lot neat details though; such as the new changes in light and the way animals run away from you faster than before after you hit them. You're right though when you say it seems like groundwork; XP does nothing and while the food bar is a nice touch I don't know how amazing it will be. I completed "Ghost Trick" for the DS the other day, and it's completely awesome. Made by the same people who did the Phoenix Wright series, it puts you in the role of a sort of poltergeist, who gets the ability to rewind time to four minutes before someone's death to avoid that death. It's got a very old-school LucasArts vibe to it at the same time, with the animations and all.

(That dog in the video, by the way, is also awesome. One of the best characters in the game. Truly a Top Pomeranian.)

Fairly minor spoilers in this second trailer:

Also, it's one of very, very few games to make me cry.

Play it. Anyone else "played" Saya No Uta and felt bad/sickened/like drinking afterwards? It's a visual novel rather than a game. I forgot about some of Japan's "quirks". :( I still feel queasy. Unknown if recommended and honestly, I question the legality of it in western countries. Yeah.
----
Anyone used on-live? Got Gears 3 at midnight. The fella and I get excited about games that have local co-op (that we're both interested in). We played campaign for a couple hours before collapsing; so far, it's still the same mindless fun, story's a little better (ETA: even if there hasn't been a SINGLE line of dialogue that hasn't been full of snark).
Horde mode's gonna be interesting, especially since neither of us have XBL Gold.

(ETA: Horde's pretty awesome, but I can see it'd be even better w/ more than 2 players.

Also, either I've embarrassed myself by saying I like Gears and no one wants to speak up, or everyone's too busy playing (Gears or otherwise) to post. It's hard to tell.)

I've got a nice upgrade coming in the form of Win7, from WinXP. I should probably buy some new RAM to celebrate switching from an 11-year-old operating system. Not really a game, specifically, but finally being able to use the latest version of Direct X should do lovely things across the board.

Recently got Sword of the Stars - pleasantly surprised that underneath the garish UI, horrible 2D artwork and occasionally cheesy voice acting, it's the best empire-building game I've played in a long time. It ate roughly a complete week of my time, and then I found out that there's a sequel coming out some time between last week and next month. The sequel looks like it's going to be one of those rare gems - a game set in space that doesn't look ten years out of date when it's released. Plus one of the races gets to summon huge* genocidal psychic whales to take part in fleet battles. I know I have to move house pretty soon but I'm not sure where I'll find the time.

(*as in bigger than the biggest ship anyone can build)

After watching the trailer it appears that it could turn out to be quite a good shooter... But a linear, heavily-scripted shooter. Might be great, but won't be much of a Syndicate game in my books . I've had this conversation on 2 other forums already, so I won't go into it any more now unless anyone is really interested.
Even if it's great I'm going to overlook it (at least until it's really cheap), mainly because I'm just sick of shooters right now. I didn't even finish Human Revolution, and don't know when (if?) I'll be bothered to.

Anyone who is lamenting the Syndicate FPS remake should be interested in this.

Dark Souls. Is on its way. To me now.

Sweet, sweet masochism. Comes with a guide too, since it's the collector's edition, but I'll try to ignore that as much as I can. Maybe just read the weapons section, if the weapon upgrade system is as opaque as it was in Demon's Souls.
