    Well, I won't pretend to understand on what terms the Supreme Court makes these types of decisions, and their stays don't do much sometimes -- in March 2010 they halted the execution of Hank Skinner on the night of, and while his lawyers are still active in the Texas courts right now his execution is scheduled for this November.

    Ultimately, this is on the government employees of Georgia, from the attorney's office to the prison personnel. If your job one day becomes to kill a person who was convicted on evidence that would be insufficient for firing someone from Walmart, you don't fucking do that job. It's not complicated.

    But, it's done

    Which death penalty supporters and fetishists must be realizing is a huge fucking cockup on Georgia's part. As much as the NAACP, conservative action groups and politicians should have been tearing their hair out over this. This is not how you keep the liberal youth disengaged and not how you keep the middle apathetic.

    Not quite - "inappropriately touching" male members of his congregation during theological therapy sessions, and by his own words, "adultery with a man". He's a real nut job, tried to bring a body back to life in a mortuary once, and in the 90s he publicly said that homosexuality is an sickness that should be purged from the world, etc...     A followup to the Amazing Whitechapel Speed Of Sharks discussion:

    Baffling results from CERN as neutrinos appear to travel slightly faster than the speed of light.

    Hopefully this will be a good example of the mechanism of science: Someone has found a result that appears to contradict existing scientific theory. Accordingly, they've opened up their research to see if anyone can explain what's going on.

    There are three classes of things that I think could happen here:
    a) Simple explanation (the experiment is flawed, FTL does not happen)
    b) Crazy explanation (some heretofore unknown effect is occurring that makes it look like FTL is happening, but it isn't)
    c) SUPER MEGA CRAZY PHYSICS PARTY EXPLANATION (FTL is happening, rules need rewriting).

    I guess that those possibilities are also in order of (vastly separated) probability, but honestly I'm excited to see the process of coming to any of them.

    @256 - Something faster than the speed of Bob?! I for one will believe it when I see it. Of course since my eyes probably can't physically distinguish things going that fast, I'll probably never believe it, even long after E=mc^2 is updated to E=mc*^2

    * Except for neutrinos or in the states of Texas & Louisiana where the theory of relativity has been deemed to be nothing more than just that and one that violates several state and local statutes.

    Every case of this I hear about seems to involve an elderly person sitting next to a heat source. I don't know what to make of that, but it does seem pertinent somehow.

    This seems like a pretty cool way to find potential therapies.

    Re: Movies in Our Minds - have seen some article or other calling this "video of actual memories" which seems disingenuous since it definitely is not video of actual memories. It's video compiled from guesses about what someone might be remembering.

    It's extremely impressive that fMRI can give enough information to identify when someone is thinking about a plane, or a face. But to imply that memories have been recorded and look like that is... wrong.

    it has always been theory (theory as in tectonic plate theory ie. almost as true as you can get) that certain things can and do travel faster than light, but there has been a problem in the past with observing this.... i believe that is the current breakthrough... my google fu is weak today due to lack of sleep, but basically the media are not physisists. It's a myth similar to that of "people believed the earth was flat", to paraphrase the great pratchett: teachers are liars to children but for a good cause
