    @RenThing: I think that was is the only way to make it work. If they went back into the hotel, it wouldn't work, but this at least sounds like something that you can read on it's own merit.

    I don't know if this counts or not, but I thought it was interesting:

    The latest Reason-Rupe poll asked respondents to use their own words to identify what the government spends the most money on. The following graphic depicts their responses with word size corresponding to frequency. The bigger the word, the more people who mentioned that particular kind of spending.

    Knowing Stephen King, it'll be a completely new book that just happens to feature a character from The Shining. He's pretty consistent, and I've always found him to have a pretty good grasp on his ideas. Stephen King is one my guilty pleasures, but I'm starting to think it shouldn't be so guilty. The guy knows what he's doing, and does it well, with very few outright misses of the mark. I'll put my faith in him.

    @magnusisasillyname: Definitely. It's not high literature, but the man is a solid writer. His On Writing book is basically my writing bible and I try to reread it at least once a year.

    Remember the robotic pack-mule Big Dog, the creepy four-legged robot that could run and jump over difficult terrain and take a kick to the side, restabilize and keep moving while running at full speed?

    They've made one bigger and capable of doing everything that Big Dog could while carrying four hundred pounds.

    They've named it Alpha Dog.

    I'd be interested to see if it can operate as smoothly with an uneven weight load but this is good/scary. I for one welcome the coming of our robot-horse overlords.

    Is your school-aged kid banned from playing conkers at school due to "health and safety concerns"?

    Well it's nothing to do with the Health and Safety Executive:

    @sneak - yeah, there were a whole bunch of stories like that that the H&S chaps have said 'no idea where you got that idea from' recently.

    There was a bit of a culture in the UK for a while of fear of litigation, but it does seem to have died down a bit. The tipping point seems to have been people too afraid to clear snow from the pavement outside their property during the recent heavy winters we've had, in fear that someone falling over on a cleared bit would sue them for not clearing it properly.

    Common sense does seem to making a comeback. I even bought a communal shovel for the flats I live in so we could each do a bit at a time...
