Teenager claims to have lived wild in a forest since childhood

A boy turns up at a police station in Germany speaking little German but apparently being fluent in English, he claims to have no memory of who he is saying only that he has been living rough in the woods with hi Dad for years, until his Dad died recently.

I am suspicious, but we'll see. A lot of people are drawing parallels with the Piano Man, but this also has a distinct whim of Kaspar Hauser.

Online gamers crack AIDS enzyme puzzle

Online gamers have achieved a feat beyond the realm of Second Life or Dungeons and Dragons: they have deciphered the structure of an enzyme of an AIDS-like virus that had thwarted scientists for a decade.

The exploit was published on Sunday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, where - exceptionally in scientific publishing - both gamers and researchers are honoured as co-authors.

6 Things the Film Industry Doesn’t Want You to Know About

You may already be a film industry cynic. Maybe you think Hollywood is a barren wasteland, devoid of creativity and originality. Maybe you’re sick of seeing talented people get ignored and vapid hacks get splashed all over the trades. Maybe you’re tired of 3D everything and having to re-buy your movies every five to ten years.

I’m not here to dissuade you of any of that. Hell no, I’m here to make it worse. Get ready, because this is some of the rottenest shit of which the film industry is capable. These are the things so terrible that Hollywood has to cover them up, lest God see their sin and smite them accordingly (and keep various government entities and lawyers off their backs, of course). If you still had any kind thoughts toward Hollywood, I suggest you prepare yourself for crushing disappointment.

@Vorna - That's a great article. Tho' in fairness you could probably apply those forms of shady practice across any industry sector, not just movies.

*hums there's no business like show business*

On a side note about copyright, does anybody think that there will ever be a work enter the public domain ever again? I can see the terms being extended in perpetuity.

I think it's bound to happen, we are just now crossing a huge technological generation gap with the people who are deciding about things. Once the fax & VHS generation are finally gone, things like this are bound to change.

Actually yeah, you are quite right. There may well be a de-facto case that works have entered the public domain once they have been remixed/remade/remodelled widely across the net. The phrases genie in a bottle, and cat out of the bag apply here I think.

The future of drone warfare: fully-automated killbots.

I for one welcome the coming of our robotic, murdering drone overlords.

@Ren Thing: Charming. I'm inspired by our progress as a species.

Be interesting legally - who is accountable when one of these things blows the fuck out of a wedding party? The programmer? The military?

If Robocop has taught us anything, clearly the wedding party had it coming.
