Because I'm spending too much time in the Open Mic thread and need happy thoughts.

I got my IUD today! HURRAH! Now I don't have to worry about taking a neon pill during a 1 hour time window everyday, nor do I have to worry about buying more packs or neon pills constantly; it's good for FIVE years. Moreover, it's more effective than the pill!! :D

However I do have to deal with feeling cramped up and bloated for a few days and ouchies the procedure was not comfortable (like getting a charlie horse in my uterus x_x). But it's for the greater good, it really is.

Also my birthday just passed and gifts included beer books from my boyfriend (How to Brew by John J. Palmer, The Craft of Stone Brewing Co., and Brewing Up a Business), a book on the Japanese Tea Ceremony from a friend of mine, and the entire collection of the Transmetropolitan paperback reprints from my sister (technically half of them is for bday, and half for xmas). Hooray reading!

Got my car back the same day as dropping it at the shop!

Getting right back on that bass line for Shakedown Street after years of not playing it! It's kind of the only Grateful Dead song I actually like. The entire rest of their (impressive) catalogue does little for me, but I'm glad I still have a line on that one song.

It's a little harder to get in bc your cervix is tighter, so there's that. I remember my old ob/gyn from my uni saying it had something to do with advertising them more to women who were already sure their family was "complete," since there is a risk of getting PID (small, but it exists), which can affect fertility. Otherwise my ob/gyn seemed completely supportive of the idea and the Planned Parenthood people didn't mention any greater risk of rejection for me.

edited to add: Just found this when looking through the Family PACT website:

"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recently announced that long-acting reversible contraceptive methods (LARCs) -- namely IUD and the implant (Implanon) -- are safe for use by almost all women of reproductive age. Many have mistakenly believed that only women who had given birth and who were at low risk for sexually transmitted infections should be considered candidates for LARCs. ACOG is recommending that LARCs are appropriate for almost all women -- including adolescents, stating, "Available evidence suggests that IUDs are more effective and have higher rates of satisfaction in nulliparous women compared with oral contraceptives."

Today I met up with two great friends that I haven't seen in ages. We went to the Mill Street Brewpub and I got to try their Oktoberfest Beer (which was AMAZING). But...yeah. It was good to catch up and get rowdy. Really nice girl's night out. :)

Cold day today, which I'm not a big fan of (even less so when impertinent foreigners (e.g. anyone from outside of Southern California) tell me this isn't "real" cold), but with it came a bit of rain which was lovely.

And there was German chocolate cake, which I usually skip because it is ZOMGtoosweetyeech!! but decided I'd take the piece my mom was shoving my way. And finally hot chocolate. Which seems anticlimactic now, after the cake, but fuck it I've been thinking about it all day long. Yay, hot cocoa!

I found out that year-long memberships for my boxing gym are now $100 cheaper and that the owner is VERY flexible for payment plans for it. I...I'm actually going to go for it. I'll be able to go to the gym any day I want instead of scrapping enough money for one class a week if I'm lucky. So hooray weight loss! Hooray for punching people! Hooray!

Also interesting because I'm right in the middle of a two week free trial at the YMCA and, while I ADORE the facilities they have there, I just find the all-female and no children environment a lot more accommodating. Plus because it's a small gym, the chances of making friends there are increased. And everyone there is just awesome. I don't think I can bear to NOT see the coach there. She's really great.

My very elderly and cantankerous Mercedes, Moby Benz, passed it's MOT test today, just needing two new tyres (which I'd guessed it would). Last year the thing cost me £850, so this was much more palatable.

And my girls have guinea pigs, which I have had to concede are more cute than I was initially prepared to acknowledge.

It was my mom's birthday last night. I think she was happy, even if the restaurant was too loud for her to hear much of anything.

I dressed pretty awesome today as it's the first day where it won't boil me alive to do so. Breezy and a little rainy! My favorite weather.

Took my three year old out for the day, first time in ages I've spent time with her on her own. We went from Gosport to Portsmouth on the ferry, I didn't have a plan for what to do next, but when we got off, she said 'Daddy, want to go on ANOTHER boat', so we went and found the harbour tour round the naval base. She's a little darling and I'm going to miss her like hell when I go back to work next week.

Today, a woman who curates shows at one of the bigger art places in Salt Lake, who I happen to be friends with on facebook since she came to do a lecture at my previous college and I was able to go out to dinner with her afterward and whatnot, posted a status asking for people with experience in working in galleries to come help set up a show. Or just people in general, really. She sounded super stressed about it, the opening was at 6. I'd just taken a test that marked the beginning of my week long fall break, so for once I had time to do whatever I wanted. The plan originally was to take a day off and relax, but I decided to go help instead.

I'd forgotten just how much I loved working in a gallery. The crazy mess mad dash to the finish where tons of art that could (for this show especially) be worth more than your life is strewn about, waiting to be hung. The sudden peaceful sort of party with everyone dressed nicely that it magically becomes in just an hour (or sometimes a couple of minutes). Leveling things, taping wire behind things, hours of work on things that know one really cares about but that make such a difference for the art... I love it. I stayed and worked for about 4 hours until there was basically not much left for me to help with.

They got contact info for those of us helping. Another volunteer said at one point they'd heard that we'd be paid for the help, but I doubt it. And even though I'm running out of money and I don't have a job and I don't know how I'm going to manage, I don't even care. I had a blast. I made it clear that they should call me next time to have me help again.

Then I went to the opening for the show, and it was easily one of my favorite exhibits I'd ever seen in a contemporary art gallery. And I've been to Chelsea. I went to every opening for 3 school years at the CUAC, which is gaining reputation as the leader in contemporary art in the state. This show was fantastic.

Not to mention, things like this are kind of a good in to get into the gallery world a little bit. And they can go on a C.V. Sometimes. But really, I don't even care much about that either. I just like measuring walls and filling them with art. All the pictures in my bedroom have been hung at 60 inches over center since I moved in, just like we used to do in the gallery at Snow College. I guess part of it is the anal retentive qualities you get with a printmaker, and part of it's my inability to get bored that comes from growing up in Dugway, but I really really love working in a gallery, and I'm so excited they're gonna call me to do more of it.

Six months ago my son was born.

How to sum up the last six months?

Tiring is definitely part of it. Having to be active, on, and engaged pretty much non-stop has taken some getting used to (I'm definitely a person who appreciates the times when I can just veg). This has gone up several factors in difficulty since he's gained two things: greater degree of awareness and mobility. He's able to pretty much roll at will now. Not quickly mind you, but unless we put up some kind of physical barrier around him he's never in the same spot you lay him down in. This means no more turning your back on him when he's on the changing table or after a sink bath. He's also fascinated with cords, which means we've already started the baby-proofing. However, Michelle has been saying I've been doing a really, really good job with this so there you go.

But, along with the tiring nature of always be on guard for "NODON'TYOUDAREPUTTHATINYOURMOUTH!" or the "No, my water glass!", it's been awesome seeing him realize things like object permanence or that the dogs aren't just flights of imagination and are, in fact, real. Along with this he's become more expressive, making a lot more noises of different varieties and communication (of a sort) has already started. His noise of protest is apparently to make a motorboat noise (yes, that kind of motorboat) which is even more hilarious when he's protesting you feeding him something. Well, he finds it hilarious when you're wearing the contents of his spoon. I may just feed him with a paintball mask on.

He's also started real food. So far avocado is ok, rice cereal is a torture that we inflict upon him that proves we have no love in our hearts, and apple sauce is the BOMB. So much so to the point that he tries to grab the spoon so he can feed himself faster.

And what can I say? I love the kid. I know the reasons I had before for why I didn't want a kid, and they make sense for me at that point in my life, but for the person I am now I wouldn't change anything. These last six months have been great and I look forward to many more (or at least until he's a teenager and I want to strangle him).

my flatmate, after a serious talk about being a grown up, has come through today with six weeks back rent which means I can pay the bills and put food in the cupboards. It had got a bit irritating and was causing some friction with my girlfriend and so I'm very glad it's dealt with. He assures me that the rent is gonna be on time from now on and I'm hopeful that he will be. He's an old friend and I'd hate for us to fall out over this shit.

last night I finished third in the final tournament of my local pub's poker league. Was dead chuffed because I haven't had a cash finish in ages despite being quite happy with my game. It meant I finished fourth in the league of thirty or so people over thirty weeks of play. New season begins tomorrow and I'm hoping my luck stays good.

I brewed my first beer today! Liquid malt extract. It was from a super cheap homebrew set I got for my birthday, nothing grand, but still neat. It came with a can of extract for a golden lager and one for a golden ale and some extra sugar to add to each batch, but since the book I'm reading (How to Brew by John J. Palmer) says NOT to use the sugar and just use more malt extract instead (so that the yeast have plenty of other non-sugar nutrients to work with), I just used both cans of extract for the one batch. I figure since they're both light colored beers it should be fine, and the one extract, despite being called a lager, still came with ale yeast, so that works out, too. Anyway, now it's just hoping the fermentation goes well over the next two weeks and then I can bottle it all up, sugar prime the bottles, and carbonate. And then, homebrew!

Well, I thought I was going to go on a date today or tomorrow, but it looks like that isn't happening. Bummer, but oh well. I've been trying No Doz as an alternative to coffee so I can be high energy at work, and it seems to work very well so far. As for me...less of a good day thing and more a vile hug:

I *like* doing community service. Except when I HAVE to. I like putting my ear right up to people trying to do more than slide through another day...until the backlash of fighting to survive smacks me.

Left alone with another person doing mandated hours at a community food place (hand out boxes of dry goods), running two conversations in two languages with two ladies, both with children, and I'm trying to remember the very few details I know about all the paperwork they need. Spanish convo started first so we get to the part where she gets her box o' goods before my English speaker does. English speaker does not like this and starts telling me I'm giving the other woman preferential treatment; that I'm discriminating against her. I hold my breath for a moment then explain if she lets me finish we can get to the part where she gets a box of food too. But these are details I need her to know because there's a lot of stuff (other services) I can't do alone and there's simply nothing I can do about that.

I could get defensive, I guess. I could note that I consider my ability to speak Spanish and help people a gift that I'm routinely grateful for simply because of the opportunity for communion it gives me, not because mi gente come before everyone else. But meh.

People aren't exactly thrilled to come to the center, but some are friendly and many are just quietly accepting. The lady had this defeated thing about her. Like she was tired inside, but super strong on the outside. Wilting...but then it was hot as blazes today. After she left I looked over her family/housing situation where it notes who else is in the home and the state of income. On the line for husband it read "deceased." She has four kids.

I hope she finds respite and support.

Today I reached the back-break point in a major website development project - the bit where everything starts to come together and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. After a week spent drowning in code and not seeming to get anywhere it's a glorious feeling indeed.

Additionally, after several weeks of frightening penury my bank account has crept back to the minimum level that I consider healthy. I can't start splashing cash around, but I can at least go to bed at night not worrying about how I'm going to eat. A few more weeks of the austerity measures I've implemented should see me well and truly back in the black.

Oh, and next week I go to see Stephen Fry with some good friends. And (perhaps even better) get the money off them that they owe me for the tickets :)

Apparently last month I got a payrise and decent performance bonus. I didn't know about it because our payroll is online now and I don't always check it, so didn't notice until I logged into my bank account to pay my credit card bill.

My line manager was meant to give me a letter and talk to me about it, but I was off that day, and deadline pressrue meant he forgot.

I'm still in a love/hate relationship with my job at the moment, but it's more to do with future career prospects than the work itself really. And it's always nice to actually be recognised for the work I am putting in (been a good few years since my last rise, and haven't had a performance bonus for a similar amount of time for various reasons)

I will be celebrating by finally buying a chaise for my lounge, as lying propped up on a cushion on the floor to play videogames is playing merry hell with my back (haven't had a sofa for a few years, old one wouldn't fit in this flat and haven't really had the spare cash for one till now)

I finally got a decent workout in after the last two weeks. Last week was when I got my IUD inserted, so I was just resting and taking it easy, but all the resting made me lazy and then this week I didn't workout much either. Also, the new hormones have made me all kinds of hungry and abounding in sugar cravings (as I am wont to do when I get hormonal), so I wasn't eating well either. ANYWAY, it wasn't my best workout session, a little weaker than most, but still a solid one. Also I realized that I am now 25 pounds down from what I weighted in July 2010. And I can do 3 real pushups now, so that's all exciting.

My daughter got offered a school place in the infant school that's on the same site as the one her older sister goes to. She's been on the list for nearly two years. It means moving schools, which is sad as we like the one she's at but it also means that my partner doesn't have to do the logistically impossible school run where she's meant to simultaneously drop the girls off at two schools that are two miles apart... which will remove an awful lot of stress from her life and pretty much guarantee that all of them go to the same place.

So... result!!

If all's well that ends well then today was pretty sweet. In fact the entire morning was a giant pain and largely unproductive (thankfully not financially a waste, but only through a fluke of a careless cashier). Having to walk half a mile in brutal heat is my version of "it could be worse; it could be raining." Just enough time in bleak enough conditions to make me think about all the things in my life that are wrong. Finally got my shit sorted, dropped attempts to get the first task of the day and headed home to regroup. Got a leisurely chill in AC, ate nicely and was much more composed for the rest of my day.

Visited a friend who improved this new-to-me lappy so now I can write in ??? - any type! So exciting! Visited with his wife who is way to sweet to deserve the breast cancer she is currently fighting. Was ignored by their child.

Had a sandwich with rather spicy mustard. Yummy, yet it feels like I'm being punched in the nose. Mmh chai latte. And then improv class. Had to shake off a bit of rust. Recalling that I can't just get into breath and body but have to jump into being social and I was still way in my head instead out among the people I was sharing space with and it showed. Neato quotient: another dude from a different class joined up tonight - we were both referred by the same teacher. (smug note of smugness: Dude is a tall, broad black guy who can be a bit imposing. He can intimidate people who make assumptions, but with the first words out of his mouth there is absolutely no doubt he's a nerd and a sweetheart. smug because I already knew him so got to watch the class have to learn it for themselves. };>)

We hung out after for a little while talking about the two classes. It's good to bounce thoughts and experiences around with other people, to check if they see what I see. He cracks me up a little. He's fighting with himself feeling like he has talent but firmly in his head where talent means something different. There's always something interesting about a struggle like that, as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, the thing is he's almost 10 years younger than me and has almost no real training - BUT he has real talent. I LOVE watching talented people harness their ability with practice and come out with skill. This is gonna be fun!

Picked up an apple pie at McD's. Meant to have ice cream by they failed me... Nice, nice day all the same.

My life's been quite damn stressing and shitty lately for various annoying reasons, which has reflected to my dreams also. Apparently my brain decided that enough is enough and decided to give me a spontaneous sunny holiday. I was in dream-version-Cyprus, we were there for three days, spent time planning the trip with a map that had all kinds of fun attractions (The Cave of the Sculptors), took nightly walks in a marina, followed fun evening events and bought souvenirs, went to a small cruise (the water looked nice and I felt a bit sad I didn't have my scuba gear). We talked the similarities with local and Hungarian place names, and ate massive ice-cream portions you could build yourself from a vast selection of ice cream, sauces and sprinkles.

I booked a week in Florence in December, staying in Florence for 4 nights and another 2 nights in Siena. Everything on the cheap...I'm flying with Ryanair, and staying in cheap b&b's. Italy is quite affordable compared to France, as long as it isn't venice.

After two weeks of my eyes becoming "difficult to use" to the degree where most of my evening pastimes were off-limits, A new spectacles prescription is working wonders. However, I now have to wear glasses for pretty much everything other than driving or walking down the road and also, my eyes are so spoiled by my new lenses assistance that forgetting to wear my glasses (which was apparently the cause of the initial problem, doh) is practically impossible, as I can't actually focus on text at all without them now.

My general mood has been rather in the dumps and at the best volatile lately, due to several truckloads of suck hitting the same intersection for the first time in a looooong time. This weekend went a long way to making life feel fun and me all bouncy. In short, there were video games and good sex, a colleague hinted me that there's a French open air marketplace in Helsinki and I totally overdosed on stinky cheeses and chocolate nougat, there was a large white chocolate cocoa and fun time cooking some lasagna with no hurry; a day spent exploring some abandoned wooden villas with my fiancé and photographing them, there was the latest Terry Pratchett novel to read, I learned more about creating ebooks and edited one e-zine a bit further, managed to be productive with the day and side jobs, and to dot the i, I got to end the weekend by spending Sunday night in Helsinki Hacklab doing arts and crafts, more specifically aging a replica of the Chernobyl reactor 4 console room control panel which they are creating. Did not suck :)

Just got back from a really wonderful workout at the gym.

It's also looking like, for the most part, the class is cardio with light-to-moderate strength stuff. The entire time my body is moving, my heart is pounding and I crave water. So while there will inevitably be some muscle gain in areas I don't use, I will still be able to lose weight (and most importantly the 20lbs I have left of my goal). Back home after having a little family vacation to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. It was an awesome 5 days in a little beach town. We took our son to the zoo for the first time today. I'm up to fifty push-ups a night (in two sets of 25 with five minutes of gasping for air between, and the second set with side-planks) \o/ At this rate I should have my arms back into notably buff form by New Year's. I just need the temperature to drop about thirty degrees so I can start riding my bike to and from work. I thought it was cooling off last week, but it's gone back up to 84 at 8am again, so fuck biking in that.

Hallowe'en plans more or less set in stone as of last week (hotel booked, time off work approved, tickets for two different festivities bought), I just need to find an ascot for costume 2.

@oldhat, the numbers will still go down, as more muscle mass = higher metabolism. I've been mostly doing strength training lately and while the numbers are going down more slowly, they're still going down. Also, you''ll be more lean, so even if they don't go down as much as you'd like them to, if you measure yourself you'll notice you'll still have lost some inches off you.

I have a new beanbag. It is a thing of glory. It means I can slink upstairs away from the TV and the shrieking kids and read quietly and listen to music without having to run away to the study. This will make a big difference...

I also have a swiss army knife. Which is cool. And a new Rotring Newton fountain pen. And new moleskines. And I walked to work instead of getting the bus, and also ordered new glasses.

Plus I managed to fix touch/pen input on my laptop, and the problem that was causing Opera Mobile to crash on my phone.

All in all, bloody good progress in the fight against lethargy and depression...

My attempts to be a morning person instead of vampiricly nocturnal are slowly slowly slowly sort of working. I've been sleeping BEFORE dawn (this is a big deal to me), and waking up close to noon. Yeah, the Lyme Disease return has me wiped out and sleeping AT LEAST ten hours a night, but the fact that i'm waking up, showering, and leaving the house before dusk is pretty impressive.

I am still nocturnal my nature, but having the daytime to sit silently in the livingroom all afternoon while no roommates are about, with the sunlight pouring in, listening to the sounds of trees swaying in the wind makes it worth it.

Glorious autumn sunshine.

Also, discovering that the Polish place at the end of the block has a $6.50 dinner has just made my insides quite happy.

3) On the subway ride home, waiting for the train to start, I did my usual i-don't-give-a-fuck-i'll-grab-and-hang-from-the-bars-and-bend-my-knees thing to stretch out my shoulders and back for a few minutes. At the next stop, as a fellow was about to disembark, he tapped me on the shoulder and said "thank you". Huh? "You just made my night" he said, smiling. I had a first date over the weekend that went alarmingly well. We have a lunch scheduled for tomorrow. She's a writer, beer drinker, looker and easy to talk to. I'm trying to ride the wave of neuro-chemical goodness that comes with a promising new person in my life without allowing myself to get so caught up in some removed from reality, hyper-romanticized fiction which will inevitably lead to heartbreak. I keep checking my e-mail to see if she's replied to my latest flirty bit of e-banter. It's possible I may need Glukkake to virtually bop my nose as well if things get more out of hand.

On the creative front, I finished the first draft of issue four of 8 Pills. Four more to go. I did some mixing on one of my songs this weekend. I also poked at a couple of others. I need to find some time when no one is in the house and my head is in music since right now recording (or re-recording) vocals is the primary bit of unresolved work for most of the album. It's been my back of the back burner project for two and a half years now. In that time I've written a screenplay, a four issue comic story and four issues of an eight issue one. I would really like to get the album done and move on.

I just bought a ticket to see a live musical performance of Rocky Horror. Like with an actual cast, not a typical friday night shadowcast thing. I am SO excited. I kept putting off buying tickets because they were so expensive for good seats, and then only crappy seats were left, but I knew if I didn't go I'd be really, really bummed out. And I've already been bummed out a few times this year for having had to miss events I wanted to go to (like Burning Man, among others). So, yeah, super super excited for this :D

I wanted to write up yesterday but I was so damn tired! Fine day of seeing extended family, possibly because my time with them was very short. But also sad because of that. But happy too because I ran off to a voice class that was damn awesome. Sad to miss family, happy to have class. Weird. But good. Class was excellent, had a lot of fun, brought in the good chops, remembered how to act and wrapped up the evening with fascinating talk on Suzuki/other Japanese forms of intense expression. Rah!

Today: Japanese test kicked down to a week from today instead of being in two days. It's a relief, even if it does mean I'll have to spend precious Halloween decorating time curled up with my textbook.

Hooray engagements and weddings!

So, bad news for me is that my first try at growing arugula, the arugula got cabbageworms (a type of caterpillar, not actually worms), and they munched away at some of the leaves. BUT, I was able to salvage a bunch of leaves, anyway. My spinach bolted, which means that instead of growing lots of lush edible leaves, it grew upwards like a regular plant because it wanted to flower, so it only produced a few edible leaves. Boooo.

BUT, that being said, last night, for the first time, I packed a bento which contained organic homegrown veggies :D I'm really excited and proud about that. Next goal is to be able to home-grow cherry tomatoes so that the salad tier of the bentos I make can be completely homegrown. :D

Last night my roommate threw a Halloween party, which went really well. I didn't have an guests of my own, but I decorated, drank some Duvel, and chatted with awesome people till dawn.

Today it is snowing and awful out, which is awesome for me and my broken self. I am way too ouchy from aqll the physical activity of yesterday to venture out in the world, and having treacherous icy thundersnow is the only thing that could make me not feel like shit for not venturing to NJ for the convention where Elvira will make one of her last appearances. (but maybe i'll go tomorrow) It is a day for tea, tea, tea, tea, which is perfection.

Also, today while bra-less in my pajamas, a beautiful woman told me I had wonderful breasts. It's really brightened my whole day.

I'm staring blankly at laptop screen trying desperately to say this correctly because it means the world to me.

I was with this site from almost the beginning.When it was a throbbing hive of frenetic energy..when open mic was a lunatic asylum with Uncle Warren at the controls.I used to spend saturday nights indoors with my mate huddled over a mobile phone watching the energy explode on it.I was lost to the world of active addiction with no real desire to stop taking class a drugs.I was a bit of a pratt and was put on time out for saying childish things to Warren.I came back as a different name..was told to curb my enthusiasm etc.

A couple of years pass..i hit the point where i just could not go on using as it was killing me.I finally decide enough is enough..i have to get clean.So i slowly start coming off vast quantities of evil drugs.I eventually get a second hand laptop and return..

Damn..im exhausted..falling asleep as writing this yet must get it out.

You guys..and you know who you are..or do you? Anyhow you have helped me get through some real dark hours in getting this clean.

And i have felt your pain at times but more importantly i have also felt your joy. So,on behalf of the committee and the committed, I want to thank you all from the depths of me rancid heart.

@ government spy: Again..thank you mate.I've thought about you and your partner and have been genuinely rooting for her and your recovery.Alcohol has been yet another substance that i used to abuse.When i was told i had hepatitus c i had to take drastic measures to stop and have luckily managed to stay on top of it.One of my best mates is wrecking his life with it as we speak and it is breaking my heart.I look upon him as a son but i am powerless over his choice to drink.He is so intelligent and talented like us all.His whole family have died from substance abuse yet the grog has been the main protagonist .i look forward to reading your posts.All the best.
