October is traditionally the month when the first batch of heavy hitters for holiday season start to appear. Generally if you're launching in October it's because you're trying to avoid getting steamrollered by the November releases.
It's also when advertising really starts to kick in hard. Sony America seems to have one of the better ad strategies in recent months, this is their newest.
So, what are people playing? I'm mainly still playing Gears of War 3 in multiplayer, and working my way through F.3.A.R. for reasearch reasons. Most of my most wanted all drop within the same fortnight in November...
Having finally gotten up off my ass and finished Dragon Age: Origins (yeah, I know) I have gone out and gotten Red Dead Redepemtion. Yes, I realize I'm a bit behind but I plan on getting Skyrim when it comes out next month and if that's another God of War then I'll get that too.
Other than that, still playing and enjoying League of Legends despite the large amount of shit-talking, pre-testicle-drop teens on there. It's almost as bad as Xbox Live at times.
The big upcoming October release for me is Batman: Arkham City. I absolutely loved the first game. If you were a fan of the early 90's Batman animated series, this is definitely a game for you (if you aren't, what the hell is wrong with you? and if you haven't seen it, DO IT NOW, you'll thank me later). All of the voice actors from the show are in it (Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, etc.). And to top it off, the gameplay is actually really good. It managed to blend the stealth, detective work, and beating the crap out of people pretty damn well. Arkham City is going the be that, but more so. More characters, more area, more things to do. (I'm a little annoyed that Harley Quinn isn't being voiced by Arleen Sorkin in this one, but oh well, I'm sure I'll cope).
Broke down and got all the DLC for Fallout: New Vegas. Just finished Dead Money, it was an intriguing little story, worth the gameplay annoyances. It practically forces you to go melee/unarmed early on, which I thought would bug me with my skill in those non-existant and my Str low.. It ended up making it more tense than if I had been melting everything in sight.
still enjoying gears 3 it's the first time i've gone for the full 12 month subsription for xbox live and i'm enjoying it only encountered two people that were loud and foul mouthed other then that i'm enjoying it alot.
Recently beat ENSLAVED (A western, post apocalyptic version of the eastern fable, "Journey into the West") Where the Monkey King rides a hover board (Nimbus). Very cinematic gameplay, but gets repetitive.
Been playing through RAGE (The love child of id and Bethesda) recently, just as a rental. It's not bad. If you were a fan of FALLOUT or BORDERLANDS (but without the Diablo style loot grind) or even RED FACTION I'd say give it a try.
I will say the whole time I've been playing it, I can't shake the feeling that something absolutely fucking terrible is about to happen at every turn.
FROM DUST is a lot of fun: shaping the world, saving tribes, finding mystic shamanism that allows me to repel Tsunamis and Lava. All in a day for the spirit of the world.
On the PC front, League of Legends (Dominion is out!) and World of Warcraft (Ugh...just....ugh.)
So Dark Souls is pretty much more Demon's Souls in a different world with a new story and new enemies, a little bit more refined and with a less hard-to-grasp stat system (this one is actually explained on the upgrade screen).
It's balls-hard, but even when you're being smacked around, you feel that if you were just that little bit better or came in better prepared, you'd come out on top. And it's usually true.
Just finished playing God of War III. Before that I was doing another playthrough of Xenogears. I originally picked it up when it came out on PS1, but years ago a friend destroyed my copy when he borrowed it. I had to DL it when I found out it was rereleased on PSN.
I'm undecided what to start now. Since Arkham City is being released later this month I'll probably try to finish Arkham Asylum before it comes out. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is probably the only thing that'll stop Skyrim from taking over my free time next month.
Radiant HIstoria- Absolutely lovely J-RPG, and the first one I've devoted any time to in several years. I love the story mechanics of zipping between two time streams that split when a major decision was made. Skills learned in one open up paths in the other, or allow you to zip back to an earlier point in time to open up little side-quests. And the battle system has yet to get repetitive, which is amazing!
The Binding of Isaac- twin-stick shooter for PC that's based on Zelda and heavy randomization. Random rooms in random layouts with random monsters in them, and random upgrades to survive. It's dark, twisted, worryingly funny, and wonderfully wrong. Also highly addicting, and I really can't recommend it strongly enough. Especially for $5.
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection- If you have a PS3 it should be in your collection, simple as that. Here's proof in handy Review format. :)
Scoregasm- Twin-stick shooty madness, and the sequel to a personal favorite, Bullet Candy. I won't be playing too much of it soon, though, because of all the time I put in during beta. Plus, as I may have implied, I've got more games than time to play them in right now.
Dark Souls is coming soon, but I loved Demon's Souls hard so this "waiting" thing isn't sitting well. Soon!
Also, Dead Island. I obsess over side-quests, but have slowed down until the patch releases. I want to write a review for it but I'm not wasting my time playing it with critical intent until it stops having one of the most broken interfaces ever.
Been playing a bit of Frozen Synapse. Haven't won a multiplayer round yet, but I'm having fun with the plotting and losing. I think if I was more patient I would probably do better, but I just can't be bothered simulating all the enemy's possible moves.
I've sunk something like 16 hours into DefenseGrid:The Awakening in the past couple of weeks, and now I'm contemplating buying the DLC because apparently I have plenty of money and time. If you like Tower Defense though, DG is the best one I've come across (apart from Trenched, but that's such a different take on the genre it doesn't really count).
Got no interest in any of the big releases coming out, so that should give me some time to actually play through all the games in my backlog. I'm also expecting the complete Dawn of War 2 pack to arrive in the mail today, so it's not like I'll be starving for games.
I'm on chapter 12 or so of Ghost Trick. Very enjoyable so far. It basically removes everything I didn't like about Phoenix Wright and solves many of the problems of adventure games. I haven't decided yet if the puzzles are too easy or just super fair and well-thought out! Without spoilers, the "philosophy of white clothing" was awesome! Totally makes me re-think a lot of movies. The big reveal (so far) had me laughing so hard I dropped the DS...not sure if that was intentional or if that makes me a bad person....Going to finish it now, hopefully.
Finished Gears 3's co-op campaign. Ending was a bit underwhelming, especially after those jerks played the big emotional card early by putting an instrumental version of "Mad World" in the middle of the game (I'm really sensitive to sad songs). We are definitely going to have to re-up Gold, just so Horde mode won't be as difficult to manage. I don't like playing online w/ strangers, so I'll put my username in here if we get online again. Got the new Portal 2 packs downloaded, haven't checked it out yet. I get the impression it's just challenge maps, but for free, I'd be happy w/ anything. Fella is really, really excited about Arkham City. I couldn't get into the gameplay of the first one for some reason, so I'm happy just to watch him play it. And I'm still playing Fallout. I'm even playing ANOTHER run of FO3, even though I've gone through it multiple times.
@Corey Waits: Defense Grid is awesome! One of the best Tower Defense games ever!
@RenThing: My name is Blaarrgghh. Sure! If you see me online, ninja invite me. I predominantly play Sivir and Galio atm. Still trying to feel out who I enjoy playing as.
