October is traditionally the month when the first batch of heavy hitters for holiday season start to appear. Generally if you're launching in October it's because you're trying to avoid getting steamrollered by the November releases.

It's also when advertising really starts to kick in hard. Sony America seems to have one of the better ad strategies in recent months, this is their newest.

The execution is cheesy, but it's a great idea

So, what are people playing? I'm mainly still playing Gears of War 3 in multiplayer, and working my way through F.3.A.R. for reasearch reasons. Most of my most wanted all drop within the same fortnight in November...

The big upcoming October release for me is Batman: Arkham City. I absolutely loved the first game. If you were a fan of the early 90's Batman animated series, this is definitely a game for you (if you aren't, what the hell is wrong with you? and if you haven't seen it, DO IT NOW, you'll thank me later). All of the voice actors from the show are in it (Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, etc.). And to top it off, the gameplay is actually really good. It managed to blend the stealth, detective work, and beating the crap out of people pretty damn well. Arkham City is going the be that, but more so. More characters, more area, more things to do. (I'm a little annoyed that Harley Quinn isn't being voiced by Arleen Sorkin in this one, but oh well, I'm sure I'll cope).

Broke down and got all the DLC for Fallout: New Vegas. Just finished Dead Money, it was an intriguing little story, worth the gameplay annoyances. It practically forces you to go melee/unarmed early on, which I thought would bug me with my skill in those non-existant and my Str low.. It ended up making it more tense than if I had been melting everything in sight.

Very cinematic gameplay, but gets repetitive.

Been playing through RAGE (The love child of id and Bethesda) recently, just as a rental. It's not bad. If you were a fan of FALLOUT or BORDERLANDS (but without the Diablo style loot grind) or even RED FACTION I'd say give it a try.

I will say the whole time I've been playing it, I can't shake the feeling that something absolutely fucking terrible is about to happen at every turn.

FROM DUST is a lot of fun: shaping the world, saving tribes, finding mystic shamanism that allows me to repel Tsunamis and Lava. So Dark Souls is pretty much more Demon's Souls in a different world with a new story and new enemies, a little bit more refined and with a less hard-to-grasp stat system (this one is actually explained on the upgrade screen).

It's balls-hard, but even when you're being smacked around, you feel that if you were just that little bit better or came in better prepared, you'd come out on top. Just finished playing God of War III. Before that I was doing another playthrough of Xenogears. I originally picked it up when it came out on PS1, but years ago a friend destroyed my copy when he borrowed it. I had to DL it when I found out it was rereleased on PSN.

I'm undecided what to start now. Since Arkham City is being released later this month I'll probably try to finish Arkham Asylum before it comes out. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is probably the only thing that'll stop Skyrim from taking over my free time next month.

I'm a little overloaded at the moment-

Radiant HIstoria- Absolutely lovely J-RPG, and the first one I've devoted any time to in several years. I love the story mechanics of zipping between two time streams that split when a major decision was made. Skills learned in one open up paths in the other, or allow you to zip back to an earlier point in time to open up little side-quests. And the battle system has yet to get repetitive, which is amazing!

The Binding of Isaac- twin-stick shooter for PC that's based on Zelda and heavy randomization. Random rooms in random layouts with random monsters in them, and random upgrades to survive. It's dark, twisted, worryingly funny, and wonderfully wrong. Also highly addicting, and I really can't recommend it strongly enough. Especially for $5.

Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection- If you have a PS3 it should be in your collection, simple as that. Here's proof in handy Review format. :)

Scoregasm- Twin-stick shooty madness, and the sequel to a personal favorite, Bullet Candy. I won't be playing too much of it soon, though, because of all the time I put in during beta. Plus, as I may have implied, I've got more games than time to play them in right now.

Dark Souls is coming soon, but I loved Demon's Souls hard so this "waiting" thing isn't sitting well. Soon!

Also, Dead Island. I obsess over side-quests, but have slowed down until the patch releases. I want to write a review for it but I'm not wasting my time playing it with critical intent until it stops having one of the most broken interfaces ever.

Been playing a bit of Frozen Synapse. Haven't won a multiplayer round yet, but I'm having fun with the plotting and losing. I think if I was more patient I would probably do better, but I just can't be bothered simulating all the enemy's possible moves.

I've sunk something like 16 hours into DefenseGrid:The Awakening in the past couple of weeks, and now I'm contemplating buying the DLC because apparently I have plenty of money and time. If you like Tower Defense though, DG is the best one I've come across (apart from Trenched, but that's such a different take on the genre it doesn't really count).

Got no interest in any of the big releases coming out, so that should give me some time to actually play through all the games in my backlog. I'm also expecting the complete Dawn of War 2 pack to arrive in the mail today, so it's not like I'll be starving for games.

I'm on chapter 12 or so of Ghost Trick. Very enjoyable so far. It basically removes everything I didn't like about Phoenix Wright and solves many of the problems of adventure games. I haven't decided yet if the puzzles are too easy or just super fair and well-thought out! Without spoilers, the "philosophy of white clothing" was awesome! Totally makes me re-think a lot of movies. The big reveal (so far) had me laughing so hard I dropped the DS...not sure if that was intentional or if that makes me a bad person....Going to finish it now, hopefully.

Finished Gears 3's co-op campaign. Ending was a bit underwhelming, especially after those jerks played the big emotional card early by putting an instrumental version of "Mad World" in the middle of the game (I'm really sensitive to sad songs). We are definitely going to have to re-up Gold, just so Horde mode won't be as difficult to manage. I don't like playing online w/ strangers, so I'll put my username in here if we get online again.
Got the new Portal 2 packs downloaded, haven't checked it out yet. I get the impression it's just challenge maps, but for free, I'd be happy w/ anything.
Fella is really, really excited about Arkham City. Verdict on the FFXIII endgame? I actually found that the game came into its own nicely in the area before the Big Badguy Reveal (the area before the area before Gran Pulse), offering up proper dungeonlike areas... But after alllll that corridor walking for the first twenty or so hours, you'd really have to be interested in the battles to stick around after the Gran Pulse detours turned out to be more corridors and LOTS of backtracking through'em.

Thankfully, I WAS interested enough to stick with it for a total of 70 hours. Did all the hunts I could do before the post-ending grid increase (including a couple of fights I technically wasn't strong enough for, but managed to claw my way through), and then was pleased to discover some real exploratory areas between the corridors.

It's a shame, though. If they'd just tightened the game a bit, removed some of the repetitive "oh no we can't do it/oh yes we can" dialogue, and above all axed ten to fifteen hours of corridors from the start of the game, they would've had a really GREAT game. As it is, I feel a lot of players were tired of it once they got to the meat of the game - 15-20 hours in.

I did like Dead Money a lot, though.

I haven't been playing much. Over the summer I got really into Team Fortress 2, just before it went free-to-play, but I've kind of gotten out of it as gaming has become more casual since I started school.

I really want Arkham City, but my X-Box is busted and it doesn't come out for PC until November and I can't really afford it anyway. @TwentyThoughts, re: FF13. Eh. To be honest, it'd been so long since I played it that I had forgotten who everyone was and why everything mattered. They did that whole flashback montage at the end and I was completely lost. I am doing the hunts just to give myself something to play for a few minutes while I decompress from work, before cooking dinner for the lady of the house.

It's certainly a gorgeous game, but either Final Fantasy games aren't as good as when I was a kid, or I've just grown to not like them any more. I don't think I'll even consider going back to a JRPG until they decide to include Japanese audio tracks with subtitles. Horrible dialogue and bad writing are easier to ingest through other languages and subtitles.

But in a few weeks, Arkham City will be here and I can leave it all behind. Then Uncharted 3. Then I return to my never-ending backlog of games. Assassin's Creed II, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, LittleBigPlanet 2, Portal 1...

I tried to make this deal with myself that I wouldn't buy new games until I had finished a few of the ones I already had. I forgot that there's also a new Legend of Zelda coming out soon.

Final Fantasy games aren't as good as when you were a kid. After FFIII on the SNES, there were only a few shining moments left in the series- FFIX and FFXII. Also, the online RPG thing really should have been done as spinoffs, rather than as part of the proper numbering.

I think I've lost my taste for J-RPGs. The first one I've actively enjoyed in years is Radiant HIstoria. I used to play a ton of them, like Lunar 1&2, Chrono Trigger, Arc the Lad, Shining Force, etc. Now I start playing, the game talks forever before giving the player even a bit of freedom, and even if I don't put it down out of boredom after 2 hours I still tend to find the battle systems better suited to putting me to sleep than anything else. The genre just feels like it stagnated.

On a side-note, one of these days I've got to take another crack at Knights in the Knightmare. It practically requires a phd in its battle system to clear even the first fight, but I get the sense there's something in there worth finding.

-edit- And wouldn't you know, after posting this here's the video for the Serious Sam RPG-

I can relate to those going off JRPGs, I'm in the same boat. For me the last decent one was FF12 because it changed things up and took a few risks, but it was so hated in Japan they decided to abandon it in favour of something even more linear and worthless than 10 was.

As a genre it has ceased to move on. All the ones I've seen on PS3 and 360 might well have been on the PS1 for all the use they're making of the power and storage space beyond 'ooh shiny'.

Even the most stagnant western genre, the FPS, throws in interesting new ideas every now and then.

FFXII's battle system was definitely a step forward in gameplay for the FFs, it's a shame the plot was so bad. "I'm someone you've never heard of, and I'm here to tell you about a thing you've never heard of in a place you've never heard of. Even though you've never heard of it, it's really important."

VIII and X are my favorite of the post-SNES FFs; VIIIs mechanics are pretty good (although well within the increasingly boring JRPG template), and the way X unfolds its world as you play through it is really beautifully done.

I bought my friend Radiant Historia for his birthday and he seems to really enjoy it.

I got Tactics Ogre for the PSP but don't have a lot of time to play it. I was a big fan of Final Fantasy Tactics so playing a similar game from the same creators appealed to me.

Final Fantasy 6 was my favourite in the series. 9 is my favourite PS1 entry. I enjoyed bits and pieces of 10 and 12. I thought 10 had a decent cast and a great soundtrack, the story wasn't too shabby, but really cheesy in some places. I loved the design and world of 12, but the characters were forgettable and the story wasn't all that great.

I will probably cave and get Ni No Kuni, simply for the visuals.

For those looking at getting Arkham City, are you planning on getting the DLC as it comes out, or hold off and wait for a game of the year edition? This, and Uncharted 3, are the first games I've ever pre-ordered. Usually I just wait for cheaper, more complete versions.

Without spoiling anything about Dark Souls, now that I've played it for a bit: The very best moments in the game are against the bosses. These are real skin-of-your-teeth fights, and their difficulty is JUST so that as long as you've been able to get through the areas before them, you should be able to beat them... But only just, and only as long as you think on your feet. There's almost nothing more satisfying than figuring out the boss' quirks on your first go against him, and proceeding to deal the final blow with half a lifebar and no health potions left.

I recently did a review for ORCS MUST DIE! at my website here, and I have to say I was extremely impressed with it. I'm still playing it long after the review was finished.

Some folks have mentioned Defense Grid -- to my mind, that's the pinnacle of Tower Defense, and I've been playing it off and on for over two years now. But a close second is Kingdom Rush, which can be played for free through armorgames. Both are VERY fun, and Kingdom Rush has made some nice updates of late.

There's also a new version of Elevator Action out for the PS3 that I'm loving the heck out of -- and as a nice bonus, it comes packaged with the original arcade version. :)

I think someone else here nailed it on Deus Ex -- it rewards perfection, and punishes even slight flaws in your gameplay. I've still enjoyed it, but it's been set to the wayside for now.

As for Final Fantasy, I did play XIII, right up to the final boss, and then quit. That final boss just continued to kick my ass, despite my managing to handle everything else the game threw at me, and despite a fair amount of grinding on my part. So I gave up on it. I still think XIII is an alright game, but it doesn't come close to beating X, which is the best of the series for me (followed by VII and VI). I've heard that XIII-2 is trying to fix some of the problems folks had with XIII, like the extreme linear nature, and so I'll be willing to give it a look.

I've been playing Rage and it's very pretty, but pretty generic. The characters are something to behold - with the exception of the enemies, all the characters are very diverse. It also had the least dramatic ending, I've ever played though. No villain, no grandstanding, no sense of closure. It was just like the end of all the other missions, except for a short 20 second video that set up the sequel.

Well, I was about to preorder Skyrim last month, but then Steam, the bastard, had basically all the games I wanted on sale, and over the course of two weeks I stupidly spent all sixty dollars I had set aside on other games.

So, I'm playing through all six campaigns in Dawn of War II: Retribution (they're nearly identical aside form the race you play, but the dialogue and hammy acting makes it worth it), nearly done with The Witcher 2 (brilliant and beautiful, but my computer grumbles trying to run it, and it is fiendishly difficult even with all the patches that make things easier) halfway through Fallout: New Vegas (awesome), eating up all the Fallout 3 DLC (nearly as awesome) slogging through Darksiders (much better than I expected, but the lack of a quick save and the fact that it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be about combat or puzzles are both annoying), and occasionally doing a mission or two in Far Cry 2 (a solid and very high-quality shooter, but for some reason I still find myself getting bored with it).

So I have plenty of things to play, but none of them are Skyrim, and due to my own foolish impulse purchases I probably won't be able to buy it on release day. Damn you, Steam sales, why are you so enticing?

When you play as Catwoman you're constantly being called a bitch. Even Jim fucking Gordon calls Harley or Catwoman a bitch at one point. It's slowly toned down through the game, but it's pretty jarring and especially at the beginning. It's not done to suit some sort of overall narrative but to be gritty and it accidentally casts the game in a somewhat misogynistic light. This is counteracted by a lot of the character work and story elements later on, but getting called a bitch by every henchmen you met for the first mission is pretty depressing.
