Without spoiling anything about Dark Souls, now that I've played it for a bit: The very best moments in the game are against the bosses. These are real skin-of-your-teeth fights, and their difficulty is JUST so that as long as you've been able to get through the areas before them, you should be able to beat them... But only just, and only as long as you think on your feet. There's almost nothing more satisfying than figuring out the boss' quirks on your first go against him, and proceeding to deal the final blow with half a lifebar and no health potions left.

Portal 2 co-op is sublime. There have been plenty of hearty laughter between my co-op partner and I from GladOS, the robot animations, and just general portal-related tomfoolery.

Dark Souls is eating my face! Then again, I've only played for a bit and just got a Longsword +2. I think I'll be sticking with almost completely non-armored, because the speed and maneuverability of the initial Wanderer gear is far too useful to pass up. Even the relatively light chain mail I bought slows me down too much.

I recently did a review for ORCS MUST DIE! at my website here, and I have to say I was extremely impressed with it. I'm still playing it long after the review was finished.

Some folks have mentioned Defense Grid -- to my mind, that's the pinnacle of Tower Defense, and I've been playing it off and on for over two years now. But a close second is Kingdom Rush, which can be played for free through armorgames. Both are VERY fun, and Kingdom Rush has made some nice updates of late.

There's also a new version of Elevator Action out for the PS3 that I'm loving the heck out of -- and as a nice bonus, it comes packaged with the original arcade version. :)

I think someone else here nailed it on Deus Ex -- it rewards perfection, and punishes even slight flaws in your gameplay. I've still enjoyed it, but it's been set to the wayside for now.

As for Final Fantasy, I did play XIII, right up to the final boss, and then quit. That final boss just continued to kick my ass, despite my managing to handle everything else the game threw at me, and despite a fair amount of grinding on my part. So I gave up on it. I still think XIII is an alright game, but it doesn't come close to beating X, which is the best of the series for me (followed by VII and VI). I've heard that XIII-2 is trying to fix some of the problems folks had with XIII, like the extreme linear nature, and so I'll be willing to give it a look.

I haven't got far in FF XIII, My favourites are IV, VI, IX and XII. I should probably get FF VI on the GBA since the PS2 is currently under my bed.

One of the universal truths of gaming is that no two people will ever agree on which Final Fantasy games are good and which are bad. You can get almost a complete consensus with someone, and then find out they thought Rinoa was anything other than a complete doormat in 8, for example. (what?)

I've been playing Rage and it's very pretty, but pretty generic. The characters are something to behold - with the exception of the enemies, all the characters are very diverse. It also had the least dramatic ending, I've ever played though. No villain, no grandstanding, no sense of closure. It was just like the end of all the other missions, except for a short 20 second video that set up the sequel.

Wow Ace Combat is the shortest game I have played in a long time.. 6 hours maybe? The multiplayer is ok, but like all multiplayer is too much start stop for me; either I die all the time or just magically my team won or something. I would have liked to have known they were focusing on the mp more than the single player so I could have waited till a price drop. Well, ~$25 towards Skyrim I guess

Well, I was about to preorder Skyrim last month, but then Steam, the bastard, had basically all the games I wanted on sale, and over the course of two weeks I stupidly spent all sixty dollars I had set aside on other games.

So, I'm playing through all six campaigns in Dawn of War II: Retribution (they're nearly identical aside form the race you play, but the dialogue and hammy acting makes it worth it), nearly done with The Witcher 2 (brilliant and beautiful, but my computer grumbles trying to run it, and it is fiendishly difficult even with all the patches that make things easier) halfway through Fallout: New Vegas (awesome), eating up all the Fallout 3 DLC (nearly as awesome) slogging through Darksiders (much better than I expected, but the lack of a quick save and the fact that it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be about combat or puzzles are both annoying), and occasionally doing a mission or two in Far Cry 2 (a solid and very high-quality shooter, but for some reason I still find myself getting bored with it).

So I have plenty of things to play, but none of them are Skyrim, and due to my own foolish impulse purchases I probably won't be able to buy it on release day. Damn you, Steam sales, why are you so enticing?

Is everyone playing Batman Arkham City yet? If not, why not? Comfortably the best game this year so far. (And I don't just say that cause they're up the road and I have friends working there)

Yeah, Flabyo is right. It's the best game of the year. No question.

They improved everything: the combat, the riddles, the story, the design, everything. They even managed to include Hush and Azrael and make it not terrible.

Parts of it are a bit over-the-top-gritty though. That and the "bitch" thing are my only complaints. Otherwise, it's been my most enjoyable game experience since Fallout: New Vegas.

I kind of ran out of steam on Arkham Asylum, so I'm passing on City for now. Maybe later, but Dark Souls is almost all I need for the moment.

In upcoming news, I was all sorts of interested/intrigued/entertained by the idea of Saints Row: The Third until I found out it comes out on the same day as Rayman Origins

So not really much of a contest there.
