The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

On the evidence of recent entries, the quality steps-up a notch when all you talented pencil-monkeys are given a bit of extra time to scrawl. So I'm going to standardise these challeges as Two-Week Gigs. Any objections, let me know.

    Six-Gun Gorilla

    THE RULES:

This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.

No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. Original photography is fine.

No more than ONE submission by any one person.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    SIX-GUN GORILLA

Yes, this was a Real Thing.

(Think of it as a touch of lowbrow relief from the make-ya-think challenges of the past few weeks.)

Six-Gun Gorilla was the star of several short Wild West stories in Wizard during the late 30’s. Let’s hear from that inestimable Prince of Pulp Jess Nevins for more, as nicked from his forthcoming Encyclopaedia of Pulp Heroes:

Six-Gun Gorilla is O’Neil, a gorilla. As a baby he is trapped in Africa and brought to the United States. In Colorado he is sold to Bart Masters, a prospector. Masters is a kind man and treats O’Neil well, and O’Neil grows up to love Masters. Masters teaches O’Neil how to dig, fetch firewood, haul up buckets of water, cook, clean, and load and fire a revolver. Unfortunately, Masters is murdered by bad man Tutt Strawhan, leader of the Strawhan Gang, for what Masters knows about "the great motherlode."

When O’Neil finds Masters’ body, he swears revenge. O’Neil straps on a bandolier and two six-shooters and begins tracking the murderers across a hundred miles of Colorado mountains and badlands. He picks them off one by one, meanwhile discovering a talent for holding up stagecoaches and using them to chase fleeing gunmen. O’Neil dies as he kills Strawhan.

Not much more to say, really. An armed-and-dangerous silverback knocking about on a lawless frontier, out for revenge. Presumably holding-up banana shipments and grunting along to The Ecstasy of Gold. Named, for no sensible reason, “O’Neil.”

Remember: we’re REINVENTING. If you’re planning on literally just drawing a Cowboy Gorilla you ain’t going to score much kudos round these parts, pardner – unless you add something new or novel to the setup. More likely you’ll be wanting to recontextualise, right? Maybe you’re dragging poor old O’Neil into the modern era or further into the future. Maybe you’re changing his species, his M.O., his fruity bandolier…? Most important part of this one: Have Fun.

    You have two weeks.

FWIW I'll be putting out (through Lulu.com) the collected Six-Gun Gorilla around this time next year.

Who does an 800-pound gorilla shoot right in their dumb face?

    Whoever it wants to.

I love that the character was set in Colorado. I can't tell you how many six-gun wielding Gorillas I deal with on a weekly basis.

@moali - I figure if I'm gonna go obvious, I should at least get it in ahead of a superior talent so for awhile it can be the only obvious one.
