Hell on Wheels feels like it's trying really really hard to be Deadwood. It has a lot of potential, but I think the 'Bohannon hunting down his wife's killers' plot is needlessly injecting additional drama into a show that already has tonnes of drama from the premise alone. And I hope they plan on being a bit more nuanced with their portrayal of the Native Americans than that raid was.

Hell on Wheels feels like it's trying really really hard to be Deadwood.

I would go as far as to say that it's kind of a Deadwood ripoff (complete with a watered down Swearengen villain). The latest Community was pretty good. Kinda messy but good. Gillian Jacobs continues to be the absolute standout this season. The rabbit bit, the delivery in the last punchline and the reversal of Shirley's catchphrase were so much fun.

While it was certainly zany, it was also kind of depressing, like Season 2's Mixology-Troy's Birthday episode. The tag at the end, the therapist reveal, his self-imposed exclusion from the group and the general emotionlessness McHale protrays him as having whenever he's avoiding any sort of close human relations makes it pretty clear that he's suffering from depression. This isn't being played off in a jokey-angry way like the Advanced Gay episode.

 @ government spy

Anna Friel is playing a pirate captain. I'm definitely checking this one out.

And speaking of spies and spying, here's my current take on Burn Notice.

I think that Anson's a good, creepy villain, but I really wish they'd left out the level of his involvement in Michael's past. I can buy that the Management Group would be interested in Michael, but ten years and having Anson being that personally involved with his folks seems absurd. One of the core points of the show is that it goes out of its way to de-mystify the "spy business." The whole point of Michael's various voiceovers is that he's basically just a normal guy doing a job. That ultimately, spying is something that anyone with the right training and outlook could do.

I tend to imagine the Burn Notice show as if the viewer is having a very long conversation with Michael Westen in a bar or something, that he's telling you/us about his life, and that the voiceovers are his little asides about how things in the spy business work. In short, the whole point of the show is that Michael is not some irreplaceable superspy. He's just a guy like a bunch of other guys who's doing this particular type of work. Therefore, the idea that the Conspiracy has gone to this much trouble just to recruit this one guy undermines the basic premise of the show.

Season 2, with Carla, was about him cutting loose from them and ultimately telling them to go fuck themselves via the helicopter jump. And then in Season 4 they were all 'Hey, we have this big file linking together this web of conspiracy of things that are actually super bad and we wanted your help to take those people down, and that's why we burned you. Sorry about that.' And that's where my suspension of disbelief failed with that show. If they'd actually wanted him to be an ally, they could've, y'know, told him all that stuff right away instead of just fucking with his life over and over again.

Tonight's Hell on Wheels took an interesting turn. I was fully expecting them to make Bohannon's character this progressive former slave owner who wasn't actually a racist and even when he owned slaves he treated them all nice, but then tonight he comes out as being just as spectacularly racist as everybody else on the show.
