This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.

No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. Original photography is fine.

FANTOMAH

About time we had a she-character, I think. And let’s go back to comics for our source. Specifically, a typically twisted Fletcher Hanks creation from the pages of Jungle Comics. This infoblot from WIKIA:

Fantomah is a mysterious godlike being who protects the jungles of Africa. She has vast magical power, to the point of being practically omnipotent, and can transform herself into a frightening blue phantom/skeleton creature as well as a floating skull with blonde hair… Fantomah often sentences her enemies to bizarre and brutal punishments. For instance, in Jungle Comics #7 she transforms a band of greedy diamond miners who oppressed the natives into one man, then sends that man to an "unfound world" to be enslaved by hideous green fanged monsters, then sent into a pit of cobras, and then absorbed into a wall by a giant hand.

In a way we’ve already met Fantomah, on the grounds that our old friend PROFESSOR ZOMAX was one of her enemies. You’ll recall he was the unfortunate eco-hater who was screwed-over by NATURE ITSELF and quite probably sodomised by gorillas. So let’s not scrimp on the Weird And Horrible, yes?

Fantomah has been variously reinvented down the years as a bimboesque Tarzanette, an Egyptological sorceress and so on… but let’s stick to the “DEFENDER OF THE FOREST” motif. We’ve drifted away from Spandex in recent challenges – absolutely nothing wrong with that – but let’s go back to core, eh?

@ David Lee Ingersoll: I think this challenge has been so kick-ass because the African, jungle, witch-doctor, blood and primaeval elements really pushed our buttons. Plus, we had a "Queen of the Jungle" theme, which is always popular. And I reckon that skull-face power was the cherry on the top. The judgement process is based entirely upon my unreasonable, unquantifiable and whimsical gut reaction to the pieces of art on any given week, not on who drew them. If that seems unfair, or if you find yourself throwing a tantrum because none of your own entries have been showcased yet, you can and should beware of the digital door striking your arse on the way out. Remake/Remodel isn't about getting your art shown-off on a comics gossip website; it's about challenging artists to use their brains and their skills to respond intelligently to interesting problems, and getting the feedback of their peers along the way. The Bleedingcool slot is merely the period at the end of the sentence.

Second, you say anything piss-takery will be removed - but what would it take to be deemed piss-takery? Does that refer to the artwork, or what you say to other subscribers, or both?

All of us have felt "outclassed" by something here, and complaining about it gets boring, so better to put your energy into getting your game up to the level you wish it to be. It took me a few years to really hit a level I felt I could even feel good about here with the possibility of someone like Mike Weiringo showing up and owning the entire thread.

The "No piss-takes" rule is also in the same vein; we're all here to see good stuff, so bringing something that is obviously half-assed or was slapped together with little thought is a piss-take, and it wastes both our (the viewers) and your time. Again, better your time is spent on a good piece of art or getting better for your next entry. I literally used this place as boot camp, knowing that I could do comics and art, but needing a drill instructor to say "Okay, now 20 more, soldier!"

Looking back, some of my first REMAKE pieces were utter crap. But I kept coming back, kept getting schooled by some really good artists, and eventually I started making stuff that I knew was my best work (not the best in the thread, but best for me) and it was a great kick in the ass. I had been deafened by the echo chamber that places like DeviantArt can become (OH, YOU'RE AWESOME LOL) and now had to deal with the open, stony silence that can be a forum like this, where people of incredible taste actually have an informed opinion, and give praise when deserved. Sure, there is good natured barbing and hassle, but the end goal was the same: show me something that excites my eyes and brain. Warren demanded it, I know Si demands it, and it's something we should all demand of ourselves, be it here in the REMAKE thread, or a photo thread, a story thread, fiction thread, wherever. This place keeps me coming back because I feel I have to bring my good game, art and brain-wise, and keeps me sharp and frosty and constantly challenging myself.

I don't know that I'll "hit" every time (and I'll save you the suspense; I will fuck up PLENTY), but I will keep getting better, because it feels really good to keep getting better, and I love seeing people here evolve into amazing artists, storytellers or whatever. This board loves new blood, so put on some big person pants and join in the drill. You obviously are interested, so give yourself some time to find your footing and really show what your best work is. You'll (and we'll) know when it happens.
