    The team who reported the faster-than-light neutrinoes say they've repeated the experiment and confirmed the result.

    After the first results were reported aroudn 15 of the 150 researchers involved were unwilling to put their names to a paper reporting the phenomenon. Now that's down to about 7 or 8 and the hold-outs have agreed that the other co-authors can go ahead without them.

    The researchers claim that they've reduced the margin of error in their calculation to 10 nanoseconds - if so, the reported 60 nanosecond discrepancy can't be due to random fluctuations.

    Now there is no 'Mad Science' category, i suppose i should post this here, though it's more nostalgic than new and sad rather than strange; The Register have been to Woomera and took a few pictures while they were there (the best ones are on the second page). Right, i'm off to reread Ministry of Space and have a little cry.

    @roadscum - I've been to Woomera! Got some pics and video from Missile Park, not sure where though. It's a truly weird place, like a little piece of the 1950s marooned out on the high plain above the inland sea. It gets bloody windy there at night.

    @roadscum - you might be in luck, it so happens that I'm going through my entire stock of negatives at the moment resleeving and categorising. I haven't spied them so far but I'll keep my eye out. The video might be harder, it's on a tape somewhere in the middle of 5 hours of footage from my 10,000 km road trip with the kids in 2008.

    I do keep promising my wife I'll edit it down, she still hasn't seen any of it... but me and what army...

    Here's a little offbeat project (somebody has a little too much time on their hands)


    A student from Japan’s Tama Art University came with the idea for a leg hair font, after his teachers asked him and his colleagues to create new typefaces without the help of computers.
    Creating original letters without the use of digital design seems almost impossible in this day and age, and 20-year-old Mayuko Kanazawa started scratching her head for ideas the minute she heard about the challenge. She remembered seeing all kinds of letters, words and designs shaved into people’s heads, so she knew she wanted to work with hair, but she came up with the ultimate crazy idea only after a friend complained about a pain in her leg. Somehow she found the inspiration she needed in her friend’s leg hair, and the rest is history…

    You wouldn't know it from the Register article but the Wommera Joint Project was just that -a joint Anglo-australian effort with Australia contributing to all aspects of the project.

    Also, space research at Woomera didn't stop when the British left.

    Walking through doorways causes forgetting, new research shows

    We've all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do. Or get. Or find.

    New research from University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor Gabriel Radvansky suggests that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses. "Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an 'event boundary' in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away," Radvansky explains.


    Well that's good to know, but it doesn't tell me why I went to the kitchen just now.
