One of my greatest aims is to make Whitechapel a nexus for Desirable Information.

Memes, virals, that which makes you laugh, that which makes your bowels weep; anything found or scavenged online which has no informative value: that stuff will continue to go in “Around The Net.” I’ll be updating that once every four weeks too.

This…? This is for everything else.

News Stories. Mad Science. Horrific Nature. Metaphysical madness.

Here is where we gorge ourselves on the creamy clostrum of Information. Here is where we nuzzle at the red-raw teat of the Up-To-Date Dataweb. Bring me the light of your Weird Wisdom and your New News.

(Anything of particular interest, go ahead and create new threads in this category to delve deeper.)

 @Flabyo
Prison conditions in Mexico seem pretty reasonable.

I think it should be made known, that those conditions are usually on the cartel side. If you're hooked in with cartels, and they still want you to do the jail time (they still need to control the prisons) they'll supply you with alcohol, guns, bodyguards, drugs, prostitutes, good food, etc.

If you're not with the cartels, you're sharing a small room with upwards of 10 people, one toilet, fighting for scraps, always under threats of violence from inmates and guards, insanely filthy conditions, no medical care, etc.

So if you're going to prison in Mexico, make sure you're hooked up with the cartel!

Here's a little offbeat project (somebody has a little too much time on their hands)

A student from Japan’s Tama Art University came with the idea for a leg hair font, after his teachers asked him and his colleagues to create new typefaces without the help of computers.
Creating original letters without the use of digital design seems almost impossible in this day and age, and 20-year-old Mayuko Kanazawa started scratching her head for ideas the minute she heard about the challenge. She remembered seeing all kinds of letters, words and designs shaved into people’s heads, so she knew she wanted to work with hair, but she came up with the ultimate crazy idea only after a friend complained about a pain in her leg. Somehow she found the inspiration she needed in her friend’s leg hair, and the rest is history…

As most people probably know at least in outline, there have been violent protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square since last Friday.

35 people are dead as of the latest count and the heavy-handed tactics of the police have turned what started out as relatively small political demonstration, into something approaching a popular uprising with 50,000 people or more occupying Tahrir Square.

It all started over attempts by the military to retain special powers even after Parliamentary elections and over the refusal by the military to set a date fro Presidential elections.

The military is now back-pedaling furiously after their unelected cabinet of technocrats resigned en masse and they're talking about some sort of national unity government.

link

It eventually meant that Luzerne County, which had 3 percent of the state's population, was locking up 22 percent of the state's youthful offenders.

The "kids-for-cash" scheme, as it became known, showed that the pressure to fill up these facilities led to some horrific abuses of power over children, most of whom were locked up without legal representation.

A high school girl who mocked an assistant principal on a website was locked up for a month. A 12-year-old boy who took his mother's car was locked up for two years. A 13-year-old boy got 48 days for throwing food at his mother's boyfriend.

Children as young as 10 years old were locked up. In the end, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania dismissed 4,000 juvenile cases affected by this scheme.

Great to see these judges who abused the system are now going behind the bars at actual state facilities now.

You know, when it comes to celebrating holidays that we all know are nothing even close to the rites or rituals which inspired them, all I can really say is I don't give a fuck.

To me, if I actually bother to celebrate a holiday, I do my best to capture the feeling that me and mine wish to get out of it.

When it came to Thanksgiving, my yearly toast was simply, "To being with the family you choose to be with," as most uf us chose not to be with our blood families, but a few did, and they should take that as an honor; I'm not being with you purely because of the randomness of us being related, I'm being with you because I actually like you.

When it comes to Christmas, yes I buy presents, but I don't have a tree. I plan on buying one eventually, because I actually like having a tree. Even if it's just to give my cat another place to sleep on things I own. Although, I buy gifts for people I care about year round. Xmas is just an excuse for me to spend more on my friends. I easily earn double, if not triple most of my friends, and I don't like being dickish about it. I can't just pay for everything all the time without making folks feel bad, and Xmas is one of the times I can indulge without any reservations. Especially for my kid. I just spoil the shit out of her every chance I can get, but she knows it's out of love, not out of a holiday marketing campaign.

Halloween I mostly just like to go to Austin with my girlfriend so we can watch pretty people in slutty costumes while seeing good live music.

And I don't know what to do on St. Patty's now that we're sober. I'll probably watch The Quiet Man, but I don't know if I can do Boondock Saints without whiskey.

And as far as those holidays' origins having nothing to with how I'm celebrating them, well, why would I let that ruin my fun?

 government spy:

Couldn't agree more with your approach. I celebrate Christmas because it's a great excuse to meet friends and family, to eat until you're silly and so forth and I got no issue with approaching holidays like that - or, if someone wants to place some religious meaning on them, feel free.

I get a bit cranky only when someone starts going on about traditions spanning centuries and crap like that. Actually placing some historical meaning on certain holidays that just aren't there. There's a lot of xenophobic shit and clueless nationalism going on in Finland around now, and one of the thing they're bleating about is how the modern world destroys the centuries old traditional Finnish Christmas. I swear, even thinking about that argument made my blood pressure just jump 20 points...

<threadjackrant>About the bullfighting thing... yeah, let him go to the ring and let the bull finish the job.

I eat meat, think hunting is a good thing ecologically and probably a fun hobby (was studying for my hunter's license when I was teen and going to get that some day) so I don't say this lightly: bullfighting is just torturing animals for someone's amusement and I fight it fucking disgusting. It's a nice thing that the bull wins now and then.

If you want to do scary, dangerous and extreme stuff, go jump off airplanes or do some free climbing. I find that stuff downright sexy too. That's why me and the fiancé strap pressurized gas on our backs and crawl into shipwrecks, and have our holidays in radioactive cities.

Relativism sucks and not every custom has to be accepted.

</threadjackrant>

A musician who composed a track for use at a local film festival later found it being used without permission in an anti-piracy campaign. To make matters even worse, a board member of a royalty collection agency offered to to help the composer to recoup the money, but only if he received 33% of the loot."

Copyright Corruption Scandal Surrounds Anti-Piracy Campaign
