We've all been there. Someone asks you for music to suggest, any genre, and you go all giddy and start going through your collection for what you regard as ESSENTIAL LISTENING. You may listen to it all the time, you may not have even heard it in years, but it's still wonderful enough to be even kept in your collection.
So that's what I'd like this thread to be. A placement for what you personally regard as ESSENTIAL LISTENING. Any genre. Any mood. Any length. Youtube links, soundclouds, links to a web site or even 8tracks mixes made by you are all welcome here. Just show us the best of the best of your collection.
If this is too close to looking like the Listening thread, apologies. Meant it more as a general thing as opposed to a "currently listening" thread.
I have a few artists that I always go to. Generally, it's just "Listen to everything by _____. They're the best." My biggest four obsessions when it comes to people who make music are Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, Jesca Hoop, and St. Vincent.
Then every once in a while I get a favorite song. So much of a favorite I want to listen to it basically on repeat for months on end. Sometimes a favorite only lasts a few days or weeks, but when I've been listening to it more than once every day for over a month and still not gotten tired of it, I know it's a good one.
My current favorite song I've had for the last month or so is this.
The one before that was this. It was my favorite for over two months, along with Four Dreams.
I think it was Actor Out of Work by St. Vincent before that. You get the picture. Those four people, on repeat, always.
the one record that i think ABSOLUTELY needs to be heard on vinyl is the Black Sabbath s/t debut.
i used to be 10000% anti-digital, and even though i have softened on that a bit i still prefer vinyl. this record, above all others, needs to be played loud, with the rich sounds of the birth of modern rock n roll/metal /8 million sub genres bleeds out of the opening sounds of rain and bells. i would link to it...but that kind of is the opposite of what im saying here. i think you could probably find a copy of this record for like $1 anyway.
This entire album, but starting at the end, then flowing into the first song seems appropriate, given that I listened to nothing but this album for about two straight years (and still listen to it for weeks on end, some months.) Third Eye
Joe Distort, based on your recommendation and by the record store guy saying "if you're wondering if this album is amazing and will blow your mind the answer is YES" I just picked up a copy of the s/t Black Sabbath album on vinyl. Special edition LP. Only on track one and...JESUS. Glorious. Just glorious.

Can't find this recording on Youtube, and to listen to it at that bitrate would be horrific, but playing this CD for the first time absolutely blew me away, in a way that's only happened a couple of times in my life. I'd got it through the post and put it on quite casually. And then within about 30 seconds it had me... I was sitting somewhere above the galaxy watching stars fall, the notes were like shards of light falling away into the black - sounds trite but that's the best way I can describe this. Played late at night, in the dark, it's like you're looking at the universe.
In other words, this is the most acid I've had when not taking acid. If I could only take one piece of music to a desert island, this would be it, and this would get me through...
And now time to troll the thread slightly... at the very least give a little counterpoint to all the "Essential Listening" lists you get in magazines...
Pretty sure everyone's heard of her already, but if you haven't, or if you haven't heard this song, I highly recommend it.
Expressionist-era science-fiction-themed rhythm and blues, produced by some of the most successful names in the hip-hop business, performed by a woman who refers to her on-stage clothing and hairstyle as her "uniform." I don't know about you, but that's my perfect example of "I didn't know I wanted to hear this until I heard it." Which is the best kind of discovery, I think.
"I was made to believe there's something wrong with me" always kicks me in the chest. Every damn time.
