December is a very odd month in the games industry. The rush to get product out for Black Friday is over, which means hardly anything actually releases in the run up to Christmas.

The main release this December is the new Star Wars MMO. I'm long past the point where I'm into playing MMO's, but there's no denying EA have bet a lot on this taking a significant bite out of World of Warcraft, so it'll be interesting to see what happens regardless.

Still playing Skyrim on and off at the moment, and I'll be firing up Zelda on the 18th as that's my 'game to play during the week off before Christmas'.

My folks are both DS gamers now, which means finally at the age of 35 I can actually buy videogames for people for Christmas. Oddly, for the first time in a while I haven't asked for any for myself.

Dark Souls is still a very good game, once you manage to go past the first few hours. Very rewarding, even though it's utterly punishing.
And as a developer it's very nice to see people making good games focusing on mechanics and immersion and not giving a fuck about cutscenes :).

I'll also have to get Infinity Blade 2 for iphone pretty soon. It'll be played mostly during holidays when I'll be away from the PS3 ;).

I think I'm going to take a break from Skyrim. I've played so damn much during my free time, and there's still so much to do I'm overwhelmed. I can see myself playing this game on and off throughout the coming year. So.... time for something else.

Yesterday I replaced my PC, so now I'm getting around to playing Neverwinter NIghts 2. I tried to play NWN1.... but apparently there's compatibility issues with NWN1 and Windows 7. Oh, I love it. My last PC was such a POS that it felt like it was screaming murder just browsing the 'net. So even NWN1 was unplayable, and I gave up trying. Now I have good PC.... and I still can't. Once I'm done with NWN2 I'm looking forward to picking up The Witcher 1 and 2.

Yeah, the Alpha Protocol shooty was bad, but the talky was sublime.

Been playing some New Vegas - had it on Xbox 360 sans DLCs, sold that and recently got it on PC with all the DLCs. Just getting myself a few levels before I go into the DLC areas.
Having fun tooling around, trying to walk to new places, and getting constantly mangled by Deathclaws. Fucking Deathclaws. I'll put them on the endangered species list once I'm a high enough level... I actually really love the Deathclaws in New Vegas, in Fallout 3 they were way too easy to kill too early, and then they had to add high level monsters to the DLCs that were more powerful than the Deathclaws when everyone knows the Deathclaw is the king of the Wasteland.

Also been playing lots of Binding of Isaac. Finally killed Mom, but still plenty of items to find and one more character to unlock, so I think there's some hours in it yet.

Yay, someone else played Binding of Isaac! I thought I was the only one. :)

The December gaming slowdown is always a happy time for me. I can dump time into all the games of September-November and not worry about the things I'm ignoring to do this. My pile of stuff that's half-started that I really want to play is completely out of control right now, and this lets me whack it into shape. Dead Island, Saints Row 3, Serious Sam, Dark Souls, DoDonPachi Resurrection, Ghost Trick, etc. Plus a few things I need to have but haven't bought yet, like Rayman Origins. Honestly, if the game industry stopped cold until late February (and the new SSX) I'd be pretty happy.

Did something happen to the December videogame thread? I can't seem to find it.

Anyway, I think this is a great idea: Serious Sam creators don't worry about DRM if you pirate their game, they just force you to fight a giant, unkillable scorpion man armed with two machine guns.

Lots of cool things in there. Still haven't gotten in to the End yet, though I did set up a Nether portal earlier today.

@RenThing: Mirror's Edge had a similar idea. Saint's Row picks up the difficulty a little, but what it's really about is sheer insane awesomeness. My advice from experience, though- when you get the perks available to buy, don't purchase any of the invulnerability skills or unlimited ammo. I avoided invulnerability but wish I'd passed on infinite ammo.

I just picked up Rayman Origins today, trading in Need for Speed: The Run. Picked it up on sale from Steam 'cause I'd heard good things, and it's totally taken over my life.

I haven't spent enough time in MineCraft for it to really click with me, but I love the way Terraria uses a similar sort of system (procedural generation, mining, crafting) but you do it for the sake of adventuring and that adventuring is insanely fun.

In MineCraft it seems that the mining and crafting is the point, and the mobs are just an annoyance.

Lockpick and pickpocket have also been invaluable tools as well. When you get to Whiterun there's a kajit trader outside who always has lockpicks. Once you get to 40 Lockpick take the skill that let's you do so without detection. You can then spend your nights running around Whiterun skilling up your lockpick by breaking into people's houses; since you can do it without being detected the guards won't see you enter the homes if you leave right away.

I have to agree about smithing and enchanting, but I would caution to not focus exclusively on these because your damage output for questing will be low if you don't take perks in those areas.

Also, I might suggest taking more of a focus on a particular way of doing combat. I'm going all general with putting perks in Destruction, one-handed weapons (going for two weapon fighting), and archery and I think I'm doing lower damage due to being more generalized and not specialized. I think when I play this game again I'll do a mostly magic character and then later a mostly melee character.

While in the process of getting ready for our move (next week) my wife and I brought about 150+ books (and a few dvds) to a local store and got $335.00 in store credit. Since I've been wanting to get a new game system we got an xbox 360 to replace my PS2 (which we bought shortly after they became available). So we got the xbox 360 and four games (I say "we", but honestly my wife never touches game systems... I think she liked playing Gon in Tekken on the PS1): WWE 2012, UFC 2011, Fallout 3 and Fallout: Las Vegas. So far I've only tried WWE '12 and haven't even tried the storyline modes yet... just been having tag matches and stuff, trying to get the hang of the controls. I really want to play Fallout 3 but I know if I get started I'll get sucked in and I have to keep packing for the move and I also have to get ahead on my webcomic... so the Fallout games are still shrink wrapped. I'd like to get Saints Row III because I've heard good things about it, but that's down the line (probably the same with Skyrim).

 @ScottS
I feel like I should warn you, the Road to Wrestlemania in WWE '12 has pissed my fella off enough to not want to play it ever again. And from watching him play, I can understand. You barely get to play w/out cinematic cuts every 5 minutes. And it always seems like the matches end w/ you having to press X right before you'd normally have a victory, just to cut to a scene of you getting screwed over. Very strictly scripted, which works on TV (sometimes), but not in this kind of game.

But you have reminded me that I should put some more time into my Fallout games...

@Brittanica - your warning comes a bit late. I started the Road to Wrestlemania last night and yeah.. it's annoying as all hell. In a way it's actually pretty accurate a simulation of current WWE booking, and that's not a good thing. On the other hand, I like just playing individual matches well enough, although if that's all I'm using it for I really wish they'd release Fire Pro Wrestling for the Xbox 360, because I play the hell out of that game on my PS2.

@Andycon - I dunno, THQ seems to have put a lot of moves into WWE '12. I haven't played one of their games in probably.. 5 years? So I don't remember how many moves they used to list.

 So, BioWare's newest franchise is...

Command and Conquer?

Didn't see that coming. I like BioWare as a studio, and (against my better judgement) I like C&C as a franchise. I think Generals is one of the more under-appreciated RTS's out there. And, of course, I'm waiting to see if the rumors are true, and you can instigate a romantic subplot with one or more of the other commanders in the game.

Ah, who am I kidding, I just want to know what those ORCA-looking helicopters are.

@Anchorbeard: I did a bit off googling, and it looks like EA has realized that Bioware is basically they best thing they have going for them right now, and are just rebranding studios left and right to have the Bioware name. This C&C is being developed by Bioware Victory (rebranded from Victory Studios) and is basically an entirely new team. So all bets are off in terms of quality, really.

Some extra background info: there are now 8 locations across the world branded as "Bioware". Bioware Edmonton is the original; they've been doing the Dragon Age games. Bioware Montreal (in charge of Mass Effect) was the second studio. These days, there's also Bioware Austin (Star Wars MMO), Bioware Mythic (rebranded Mythic Studios, in charge of Warhammer Online), Bioware San Fransisco (rebranded EA2D, doing... something?), the aforementioned Bioware Victory, and Bioware Ireland (a customer service center, not actually a development studio).

At this rate, it's looking a bit like Bioware let themselves get bought out by EA so they could destroy them from within.

I have Skyrim, but haven't really gotten into it. I will be playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, and still play City of Heroes eagerly. I've got Chrono rigger in my DS for when I have nothing else handy to do, and the latest expansion for my favorite tower defense, Defense Grid: You Monster, incorporates GLaDOS from the Portal series into Defense Grid's story, with excellent results. I also picked up Galactic Civilizations II on a Steam Sale, looking for good 4x strategy, but haven't had a chance to play much with it yet. I still play Civilization V, and just managed to get a Cultural Victory with Thailand on King difficulty in the year 2010. The game rated my play at the level of Andrew Jackson and Nero, but honestly the game's scoring system doesn't account for Cultural playstyle well. My next plan is to play one of the more militaristic civs at the next difficulty above King, and see if I can't just march my way across the planet.

So I logged in to my Minecraft server today to find lava everywhere. Looks like griefers finally found out about it. I had hoped that the server would remain under the radar enough to avoid annoying security features, but it looks like someone just had to ruin it for everybody else. Turns out my backup system wasn't working the way I thought it was, so I basically have to scrap the whole world (which, given the how new it is, pisses off mostly just me).

On the plus side, a new Bukkit build got released recently, so this is a good opportunity to switch over from vanilla Minecraft. Still, between setting that up, revamping the backup system, going through logs to white-list previous players, and setting up ssh so I can remotely add to said white-list, that's basically my entire day gone. Definitely not what I wanted to be doing today.

Bee tee dubs, if anyone wants to check it out (once I've got everything running again), connect via Morac.dyndns.org (also, mention your Minecraft name either here or email it to morac@morac.net so I can white-list you).

So I've been logging a few hours on skyrim. I'm up to level twentythree I think with my "battlemage" character I'm playing. I'm playing as one of my rpg characters from our tabletop rpg. It limits what actions I can utilize in the game though, if I want to stay loyal to the character's personality. She's got a complicated set of morals (we've been using her as a character for years and we basically have every detail of her life decided)...so no stealing (unless it's from enemies), no guilds (so I can't utilize all the perks you get from that). The only group I can allow her to join is the Stormcloak rebellion, because coincidentally, in our stories, she's a rebellious "imperial".

If I ever finish this game I'm going to play a much less noble, evil little lizard man character next (who i'm developing right now for the new tabletop game we're starting soon). I think it will be a lot easier to play an evil character...gonna get him addicted to skooma...i've heard you can do that. He's gonna be a sniveling little thievy character...yay!

So nice to hear what everyone got for Xmas. I got Skyrim and Dead Island for the Xbox.
I was worried that I wouldn't get to play Dead Island once I got obsessed with Skyrim so I started playing it first, but damn if I'm not having a blast with Dead Island. Looks good and reminds me a bit of Borderlands with it's RPG aspects and the amount of weapons available. I did start Skyrim, but I've been drawn back to Dead Island for my last day off before going back to work. I've actually played so much that my hands hurt now.

Christmas gift cards have brought this household FUCKING SKYRIM, and a Wii. We really wanted a used one, as it seems the fancy new black ones can't play Gamecube games (I still have that Zelda compilation that came w/ the later Gamecubes), but there aren't any used ones at any Gamestops in driving distance, and are ridiculously priced elsewhere. So we got a new one (w/ New Super Mario), plus used copies of Kirby's Epic Yarn and Zelda: Twilight Princess. Actually liking Kirby more than Mario. I'm not a very good platformer player, and Kirby's got an easier learning curve. Plus it's just so goddamn cutesy.

@brittanica - the ones that don't play Cube games are physically a little smaller, suspicion is that they've dropped the part of the hardware that let it handle the smaller disc size. If it has ports on it for gamecube joypads (on the top, under a flap) than it'll still play cube games fine.

@andycon - The two Jedi Knight games (and to a lesser extent the Jedi Academy follow-up / spin-off) are classics, and still stand up pretty well when a lot of shooters from the period really don't.

Here's my problem with Halo: Reach.

I generally play games on Easy mode. I suck at games, but love the interactivity and the storytelling. So I open-palm slap Reach into my 360, and I notice (either in the manual or on-screen) that you only get achievements if you play on Normal or Hard. They pulled this shit before when you could only get the canon ending to Halo 3 on Hard.

Cut us dumbthumbs some slack, Bungie!

Also: ripping through Skyrim and loving it. The random events--like the NPCs who came by to polish off this troll my Housecarl and I had been having problems with--give a real air of verisimilitude.

Space Marine is awesome in a very hind-brain way. You wade into clots of enemies, you lay about with your chainsword, and that is your health powerup. Delicious.

 @Fauxhammer

Funny you should mention the easy thing--I usually do my first playthrough of a game on easy, but with Arkham City I started on Normal. I've probably died plenty more times then I would have, but it does make getting past those points that much more satisfying.

That being said, having the "cannon ending only on hard" thing is kinda bullshitty.
