    Who here in Whitechapel is from or currently living in Texas? Let me get a headcount! And a poo-throwing fight.

    I for one am a wee bit jealous of all these Northerners having their little regular get-togethers. I'm not sure they know what debauchery actually is and I'd like to show them.

    But first I want to know if we even have enough here to make a Texas beard-shampooing party feasible. Who knows, maybe one of those Midwestern weirdos will come out and sling some bottle rockets at Perry's ranch (name omitted for taste).

    So, how about it? I'm in Dallas and go to Houston often, and Austin's within reach.

    I know I don't exactly post here very much, but I lurk as much as the next...well, lurker; and I'm in Austin and would happily meet up with other Whitechapelers. I do hang out here enough to know these are a fine bunch of folks, whether or not I'm posting anything.

    I'm in Houston, sans automobile, so I don't seem to travel much. I too am jealous of the northerners and I also have a beard.

    Also, if any potential meetup is to be in Houston, I could probably put a few boarders up (if they don't mind a cat), I have a spare bedroom, my office has a futon, plus there's living room couch. I also live in a fairly cool neighborhood (aka Montrose if you know Houston) full of bars & restaurants etc within walking/stumbling distance.

    I don't drink anymore, but I don't have a problem being around smokers/drinkers, etc.

    Great bar's include Rudyard's, the Black Lab, Cecil's, Anvil, and about a dozen or more fantastic restaurants.

    Totally not saying Houston is the only place to do a meetup, just throwing options out there.

    (Just FYI, I'm working graveyard shift at the moment, so if I sound scatterbrained, I apologize. By the time of any potential meetup, I'd be off the graveyard shift, and would probably be taking the day off (or the day after).

    There's a tex-Cajun place down the street that does bacon wrapped shrimp stuffed with cheesy stuff that's so good...

    I'm biased toward Houston myself--especially in terms of food. But yeah, three people, plus as many as I can fit onto my private jet, apparently :P

    Houston's not too far from me, either. Some good food and pints to be had in Austin, as well (and no, I'm not talking about stupid Sixth Street).

    I always preferred Red River to 6th, but it's almost the same neighborhood. Then again, I loved the Black Cat before it burned down, and that was on 6th. As far as food in Austin, unless it's Ruby's BBQ off Guadalupe, I don't remember too much about good places to eat. Most of what I remember were all of the chains.

    Not to say that there aren't great Mom n Pops out there, I just don't remnember any.

    The best barbecue places in Texas are an hour outside Austin--Salt Lick and Snow's--but cool places abound in Houston and Austin. I always liked Trudy's and Texas Chili Parlor in Austin. Heck, I've even found some interesting places in DALLAS, of all places.

    Now, if we're talking just good little mom n pop, look no further than Lankford's Grocery (as seen on video at Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives), menu here, and that's walking distance from my house, which is great since there's little to no parking. But they close at 3pm!

    The closet competition to them is walking distance from my job, downtown, and that's the Hubcap Grill, video here , oh my god, it's no wonder I'm such a fat ass.

    Damn, I've never heard of Lankford's, and I've been all over that place. Course, that's also pretty close to Barnaby's, and if we could (which I can't) spend some MONEY, close to Feast, La Dolce Vita, Fabio's...

    If only there was a group of out-of-towners, we could show them how dank Houston can be. Like Lola's. Or Numbers during 80s night. Or Ripcord on a weekend.

    Oh, God, no more Numbers. Please. Ever. And I think the last time I was at Lola's I spent the night sleeping in a loading dock somewhere, being eaten by bugs.

    Barnaby's I've only been to a couple times, but I've hit Baby Barnaby's up for excellent breakfast. They have an automatic fresh orange juice maker, that's just awesome to watch.

    There's Osaka sushi, down Westheimer, Riva's for Italian, Niko Niko's gets great reviews for their Greek, but I have better gryro's down the street at the convenience store next to Rudyard's pub. There's a fairly new Thai place that's pretty awesome, some of the best Pizza I've ever had at Pinks on W. Gray, and if I feel like dropping a couple hundred on dinner, I'll go back to Americas in River Oaks. Good God. They had a tres leches cake covered in flaming cognac.

    For the record, those recommendations were a joke...unless we WANT to go to the Lola's bathroom and watch a crack deal go down, or we WANT to go to the Ripcord's weekend show on the back patio and watch a fifty-year-old man in bondage gear get fisted...

    I could talk about Houston hangouts for days, though. Pinks is awesome, though I'm nostalgic for Star, and if we're talking money, Tony's and Da Marco probably have some thousand-dollar bottles of wine to wet your whistle.

    It's a pity the Vortex House is gone. Do you know if the president heads are still sitting around in the warehouse district?
