some small sheets of foam core (to cut backings for lables/tags)
pre-printed labels
a mechanical pencil
double-sided adhesive squares to stick the tags to the wall

When I got there, the wall space designated for me was two upright 4'x8' wooden panels, freestanding but secured at the base and supported in the back by a frame like theatrical flats, with the surface covered by white vinyl sheeting. It was plenty of room.

I spent the first hour or so measuring and marking where to drill in screws. Then I drilled in the drywall screws, 2 per picture, and hung the pieces. I cut labels and foam core label backings with the exacto, taped that all together and adhered the tags directly to the vinyl wall cover under each picture.

I started around 5:30PM, and was done around 7:30PM. This is what it looks like now:



The only thing that is wrong, you can't see in this photo, but in measuring the distance between the taut wire on the back of the frame of two of the pictures, to figure out where the top of the frame would be when hung at the screwpoints, I rested the plexiglass front of the pictures against my legs. My pants were a bit static electric, and that drew a thin fuzz of pastel dust off of the picture and on to the inside of the plexiglass. This happened to the two portrait oriented pictures on the top row. A couple of people looked at them tonight and when I explained about the chalk static they all claimed not to have notices. It doesn't actually obscure the picture, but because light slants into the frames at an angle I can see it quite clearly from any distance. It is, in face, ALL I CAN SEE when I look at those two.

I'm sure the defect is not as noticeable if you don't know it's there already. It is too late for me to do anything about it now. It makes me very ragey.

If anyone buys those pieces, I'll clean the plexi before delivering it to them. If no one buys them, I'll clean the plexi when I get them back home.

Soooo frustrating! Glass is generally recommended for covering pastel for this very reason, as glass won't allow the static. But glass would have made these pieces too heavy. They were sprayed with a very light fixative before being sealed up, but probably could have used a few more mistings. There is a thick layer of chalk on that paper.

I like your comic, but you may be right about the amount of colors being too many in the sky. The 3rd panel feels better to me than the others because it only has 2 colors. In the others it feels a bit too rounded and 3 dimensional in the sky considering how 2 dimensional the rest feels. Almost like it's a collage of 2 things.

This is a piece I've been working on for a couple of months. It's a first attempt at combining my fine-detail blackline style with heavy textured impasto, and I'm not entirely sure it works. The ultra-glossy medium also makes it a bitch to photograph.

Some notes.

Van Gogh. The man was a fucking genius who invented modern art almost single handedly. Plus he was crazy so I feel a certain kinship.

Reg Mombassa. Modern day god of cartoon surrealism. He and Van Gogh taught me to love riotous colour.

Colin McCahon. Mombassa's main influence.

Scientific illustration. I had to do hundreds of botanical and geological drawings in college, and developed an appreciation for the natural world.

Grant Wood. Wood was obsessed with repetitive patterns of identical objects and lush, curvy landscapes. He was also quite probably a closeted gay man, and often included handsome, brawny male figures in his work.

Chris Tolkien. His cartography blew me away as a kid. I taught myself to draw by observing the patterns of simple shapes Tolkien used to build up his maps, and using them to make maps of my own.

J R R Tolkien. Taught me the joy of making ornate borders around the edges of drawings.

Scott Trevelyan. Big name Aussie artist who was in my art class at school. I learned a number of painting techniques by eavesdropping on all the extra one-on-one tuition the art teacher gave Scott, and watching him work. Amusingly enough, Scott painted the above piece in November of last year, a couple of months after I sent him this invitation to my art exhibition. I was flattered.

Murray Ball. Drew the wildly popular Footrot Flats comic strip for nigh on thirty years. I used to copy some of his strips onto birthday cards for friends, and developed my fine-line techniques.

Emile Mercer and Ron Cobb. Introduced me to the concept of cutaways as a storytelling technique.

Paul Chadwick. Wrote and drew Concrete, one of my favourite indie comics, for many years. Chadwick's use of symbolism taught me to be less concerned with realism in my own work.

Vorticists. Warren introduced Vorticism into Whitechapel last year, and I was seduced by the geometry and high contrast.

Matt Groening. Futurama is a wonderfully psychedelic interpretation of the Populuxe school of design, and I have based some of my larger works on the Futurama template.

Seurat and Signac. Pointillists, lovers of rich colour and precise brushwork. Signac in particular produced some vibrantly coloured works.

Edvard Munch. As for me, I finished this yesterday, and scanned it in and stitched it together with Photoshop today.
It's a sintra cut (basically a linocut with different material, or a relief print). I used watercolor because of lack of time to print all my flats, but you get the idea anyway. It's my relationship with my ex, from beginning to end, set on the couch in the figure drawing studio at my old college.

That particular moment is a very late night, when the annual student art show was being judged, and a couple of our teachers who had seen the backlash and drama of the break-up happened to walk into the studio and see the boy's hand up my dress. It was 3 am, they thought we were still sobbing over the loss of one another, and when they wandered in there to get some lights for the gallery, they found this a particularly amusing thing to find instead. My professors (one taught figure drawing, the other sculpture) couldn't stop laughing for the next 10 minutes.
It was also the night that I basically lost my virginity, but that didn't happen on that couch.

@no cuddle time, I will be purchasing your comic. It mightn't be until after christmas, but I'm dying to read it.

I've been away for a while. Took on more work than I could handle, but it's been worth it. I've a few projects finishing up soon and I'll keep you posted about them if you like. Today, I'm throwing up some prep for my Dredd R-R - which I just about got done.



Also here's an image I did while working on the Irish Presidential election. I was involved in the campaign for a candidate who is deeply supportive of the arts, a strong advocate for Irish heritage and culture, a lover of animals and a genuinely good politician (believe it or not). He won the election and has signed a number of copies of this poster for me, which was really sweet, as well as requesting a copy for his personal (and considerable) art collection. The cool thing was seeing people adopt this image as their profile pic in social media as the election drew to a close.

After I wrote that, I thought about how that might have sounded to you, and that it had an awfully snarky ring to it. That's not my style, and I apologize. I think the discussion on rules seemed to have handled it much better, and the idea of sinking makes some sense to me. You do have a valid point.

I love ruling pens -- so much so I think a number of my former students hate them.

I've practically NO idea what I'm doing with paints - I've got some acrylics and acrylic board and some acrylic brushes (only through years of hoarding bits and bobs) but it's rarely occurred to me to use them in conjunction. The board was the BACK of the acrylic board as the front has a texture and I don't like painting on textures. Though I feel I should be doing something smarter with the back of the board to make it useful (Gesso? I don't know what that is, only that it's... sort of useful for painting?)

Unlikely I'll do much more for a while as proper work is a calling, but it was fun thing to do.

(I drew it using a Faber Castell black soft pencil, then under painted in blue - because ...er... I feel like that's what supposed to happen. Then panicked as I had no idea what colours I should do for the face, so took a photo, and used that as the basis for it it - lost my way towards the end. I've become strangely attracted to the rendering that JC Leyendecker uses of late, and I'd be lying if I didn't have some thoughts of Jock's dredd's in my head when I did it too...)

I have the Hellboy figure with the Japanese vampire heads, and the I took a photo to use as ref, but, I think, it came out too close to the photo (I didn't add enough of my own voice to it) but still, mostly pleased with it.
