One of my greatest aims is to make Whitechapel a nexus for Desirable Information.

Memes, virals, that which makes you laugh, that which makes your bowels weep; anything found or scavenged online which has no informative value: that stuff will continue to go in “Around The Net.” I’ll be updating that once every four weeks too.

This…? This is for everything else.

News Stories. Mad Science. Horrific Nature. Metaphysical madness.

Here is where we gorge ourselves on the creamy clostrum of Information. Here is where we nuzzle at the red-raw teat of the Up-To-Date Dataweb. The second dolphin identified the objects with a similar high success rate, confirming that dolphins possess a sono-pictorial form of communication."

The Discovery of Dolphin Language

Backstory: Rick Scott is the douchebag governor of Florida who, among many pretty shitty things, made it mandatory for anyone to get public service they must submit to a drug test first. Nevermind the fact that they have only found about .2% of those on public service use drugs, the requirement was costing the tax payers millions despite the claims that it was to save money by kicking those people off public service who do drugs (because the poor, supposedly, are rife with drug abusers). Mostly, many people believe this was to make a system to funnel taxpayer money into Rick Scott's pocket seeing as he owns a chain of labratories up and down Florida that, among other things, perform drug testing.

Anyway, apparently he recently had a press conference interrupted by The Daily Show when one of their correspondents presented him with a cup and asked him to pee in it to prove to the citizens of Florida that he's not on drugs since he benefits from so much of their tax money.

Rick Scott was not amused.

 @Stoto--

Y'know, as a writer for a few lads' sites and a mag, I always try to bring a little self-awareness to the piece to exactly avoid, as they say "hostile sexism." Many of my assignments are about crushing on women, but I always try to do it with respect and admiration, and include personality and intelligence with the crooning verses of physical beauty. Hopefully landing a couple opportunities this week to help define the voice of such places.

Some men's publishers have policies about how to mock celebrities (and whom you can't) so as not to come off as misogynist. I've always preferred the Esquire angle of being openly in awe of women, but as people, not pedestaled statues. Still, this is going to creep me out for weeks wondering if any of my jokes come across too dry, or my sarcasm too quiet.

"Y’see, one of the issues of male privilege as it applies to fandom is the instinctive defensive reaction to any criticism that maybe, just maybe, shit’s a little fucked up, yo. Nobody wants to acknowledge that a one-sided (and one-dimensional) portrayal of women is the dominant paradigm in gaming; the vast majority of female characters are sexual objects. If a girl wants to see herself represented in video games, she better get used to the idea of being the prize at the bottom of the cereal box. If she wants to see herself as a main character, then it’s time to get ready for a parade of candyfloss costumes where nipple slips are only prevented by violating the laws of physics. The number of games with competent female protagonists who wear more than the Victoria’s Secret Angels are few and far between."

Nerds and Male Privilege

@Ben Klumaster : I mean rape, of which women are the first victims. Sorry if my syntax is a bit off, I'm not a native English speaker.

But yes, men are also raped, tortured and murdered.

To quote the Unwatchable site (see my link in the previous post) :

At least 5.5 million people have been tortured and murdered within the Congo since 1998. The Congo is the most dangerous place to be a woman or girl in the World. Men and boys are also targeted and terrorized.

The most effective tactics used are rape and murder. Using rape as tactic of war is not only physically terrorizing, it is physiologically so damaging that the communities break apart into a form of social chaos, leaving no one to resist or challenge these armed groups.

This method of war is recognized by the UN as a strategic tactic, Amnesty International has stated that rape is cheaper and more effective than bullets

Armed groups Ransack villages for men and boys forcing them to kill their mothers and rape their sisters, so they have no one to returned home to. Many of the armed groups are controlled by fear and are occupied by men who have been forced to enlist. The men within these armed groups are unpaid and are often starving – essentially they are armed slaves. in order to survive they loot villages for money and food.

This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing," Dr Semiletov said. "I was most impressed by the sheer scale and high density of the plumes. Over a relatively small area we found more than 100, but over a wider area there should be thousands of them."

This has been going through my head since reading that:

Of course, there may be another explanation - I'm not sure which would be preferable.

Manipulating a single gene in fruit flies extends life by up to 50%. The same gene occurs in humans and appears to perform a similar function.

A team consisting of researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of California, Los Angeles, took the fruit fly ( (Drosophila melanogaster) and tweaked a gene in their intestinal stem cells known as dPGC-1, which is also found in human DNA and known as PGC-1. This resulted in the aging of the fruit flies' intestines being delayed and their lifespan being extended by as much as 50 percent.

In flies and mammals, the PGC-1 gene regulates the number of mitochondria within an animal's cells. Mitochondria are often referred to as "cellular power plants" because they convert sugars and fats from food into the energy for cellular functions. Since previous studies had shown that calorie-restricted animals have greater numbers of mitochondria in their cells, the researchers set about investigating what would happen when the PGC-1 is forced into overdrive.

Using genetic engineering techniques to boost the fruit fly equivalent of the PGC-1 gene resulted in the same kind of effects seen in organisms on calorie restricted diets - namely, greater numbers of mitochondria and more energy production. When the activity of the gene was accelerated in stem and progenitor cells of the flies' intestine, which serve to replenish intestinal tissues, these cellular changes corresponded with better health and longer lifespan.

Depending on the method and extent to which the activity of the gene was altered, the flies lived between 20 and 50 percent longer than normal.

 @Tedcroland

The RotK movie was done by the same production company as The Hobbit, so if you liked the animation of The Hobbit then you'll like RotK. They do skip a bit, including much of the final battle, but you do still get Frodo and Samwise's final push into Mordor (including the bad ass Samwise the Strong scene that is, IMO, potentially better than the life-action one). Added bonus is you get "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way" which I was disappointed they didn't include in the live-action movie.

But, yeah, the Fellowship/Two Towers movies were shite.

The Rankin/Bass Return of the King movie is an interesting phenomena. I doubt that it would have been produced if Bakshi had gotten the scratch together to complete the trilogy himself. I barely remember it from its TV airing, but remember thinking they did an OK job despite it being a "quicky."

I found a REALLY crappy VHS copy of The Hobbit at a thrift store. It was missing scenes, and had "fuzz outs" that suggested that it had been recorded off of the TV! Still, it was an interesting effort; it had a kind of '70s "trippy" feel to it.

I'd like to get good copies of both Rankin/Bass adaptations. And the Bakshi film, which I've never actually seen!

Here's a bit of update text from the bottom of the article:

"UPDATE: Raw Story contacted another UGA Scientist, Dr. B. T. Thomas of the Department of Environmental Science, who indicated that, while it is unlikely that the Mayan people migrated en masse from Central America to settle in what is now the United States, he refused to characterize Thornton’s conclusions as “wrong,” stating that it is entirely possible that some Mayans and their descendants migrated north, bringing Mayan building and agricultural techniques to the Southeastern U.S. as they integrated with the existing indigenous people there."

Just the possibility that some of the Mayans may have migrated north is a pretty damn interesting bit of info in and of itself.

Right "refused to characterize Thornton's conclusions as "wrong"" is not the same as approving them.

There's a lot of debunking going on on this story right now, including from the archaelogist who actually made the find. BoingBoing has an interesting summary of it all :

1. Nobody found Mayan ruins in the U.S. state of Georgia. An article posted on The Examiner claimed this was the case. That article is full of it. So full of it that even the scientist cited in the article is (in a more polite way) publicly calling out The Examiner for being full of it. Mark Williams of the University of Georgia does do research on North American archaeology. He has spent 20 years excavating sites in Georgia's Oconee River valley. But these sites are not Mayan. Instead, they're part of what are broadly known as "Mississippian cultures," a conglomeration of ancient North American peoples who built a lot of earth mound structures and whose cultures are distinct from those of the Mayans and other Central Americans.

2. Do not automatically trust anything you read on The Examiner website. The Examiner is a content farm that allows anybody to write whatever they want about anything with absolutely zero oversight or fact-checking. The guy who wrote the bogus story on Mayan artifacts in Georgia appears to have just made up the entire Mississippian/Mayan connection out of his own imagination. As archaeologist Mark Williams told ArtInfo, "No archaeologist would defend this flight of fancy." (Again, this is polite scientist speak for, "Oh, my god. That guy is full of it.")

Well, yes and no. The fact that there was trade between Central American and North American indigenous civilizations in the Pre Columbian era is pretty well established. The claims in this article are really unfounded, though.

It reads like it's premised on the idea that because Mayan civilization collapsed, that the Mayan people disappeared or went somewhere else. They didn't. They are still right where they always were, in Mexico and Guatemala, to this day. Their languages are even still spoken. The cosmopolitan civilization unraveled, but the people didn't go anywhere.

It is not impossible that cultural exchange, or even some people traveled between Mayan regions and the moundbuilding civilization of the Southeastern North American region, but the Maya were a highly literate civilization. They wrote on everything. It's really stretching credulity to imagine a relocation of a significant portion of Mayan people that didn't also bring along some written evidence. They wrote on stone, remember, and this wasn't that long ago. One thousand years. There would be something more solid, some writing, some indisputable pottery, something, if a significant Mayan migration came that far north.

And the taxes for each kind of toy vary, depending on the description. Specifically, "dolls" are toys that represent some sort of human, and "toys" are representations that are non-human, such as robots or animals. And it turns out, the non-human toys are taxed at a much lower rate than the human ones, 6.8 percent versus 12 percent. Hence, two Marvel lawyers are arguing that Mutant action figures are not actually human — and therefor shouldn't be taxed as much. And thus unknowingly unleashing the age-old Mutant debate that has long been a part of the X-Men's world.

Critics worried that the advertising ban would entail a revenue loss of $133 million and a net job loss of 20,000. Fears that the city would look worse without the mask of the media alarmed residents. Despite the concerns, the law passed and the 15,000 billboards cluttering the world’s seventh largest city were taken down.

Five years later, São Paulo continues to exist without advertisements. But instead of causing economic ruin and deteriorating aesthetics, 70 percent of city residents find the ban beneficial, according to a 2011 survey. Unexpectedly, the removal of logos and slogans exposed previously overlooked architecture, revealing a rich urban beauty that had been long hidden.

So, this is what "Santa Claus" used to look like up here in the olden times. There was some discussion about this earlier this month, don't remember if it was in here or just in social media with some Whitechapelers chiming in. In any case, the Finnish word "joulupukki" translates literally to "yule goat", and then there's "nuuttipukki" (St. Knut's day goat) that was up and about early January. These characters used to be scary things that came into homesteads to demand foodstuffs and booze. Giving gifts and hearty ho-ho-hos, not so much... Actually a saying went "the evil Nuutti will take away the Christmas".
