The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

THE RULES:

-- This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.
-- No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. Original photography is fine.
-- No more than ONE submission by any one person.

JUDGE DREDD

All righty then. Doesn’t come much better than this.

We’ve had our clowns, we’ve had our jungle-protecting sorcerers, we’ve had our gun-wielding primates. I think we can all agree it’s about time we sunk our teeth into some good old fashioned head-breaking uberviolent zero-tolerance epic future cop action, yes? With the kind permission of the splendid droids over at 2000AD, you’re about to get the chance to re-imagine the most iconic chin in British comics history. Here’s what we know:

Dredd is an American law enforcement officer in Mega City One: a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine the powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot. He was created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra.

Those of us who know and love the character could happily add to that with days’ worth of affectionate waffle. We’d mention that the common interpretation of Dredd as a fascist is a horrible oversimplification, and for a character nicknamed “old stoney face” he's in fact remarkably complex. We’d mumble about the gigapolis he inhabits – Mega City One – being a gloriously over-the-top cipher of the real-world, whose gibbering denizens are so thoroughly buzzed on the insanities of the Future that they need brutal and unsympathetic law enforcement to prevent Colony Collapse. We’d meander endlessly through our smugness regarding the genius of a character able to make readers root for him – even empathize with him – despite his stated belief that democracy is the worst thing that could happen to his town.

And then there’s the uniform.

Let’s keep the rest. Let’s drokk about with the look. Your mission is simple: You’re designing a character capable of upholding the law in a city-sized lunatic asylum. He or she is going to be wading in violence 24/7. He or she needs to be mobile, armed, flexible. He or she needs to represent the judicial system which created them, with whatever symbols seem most appropriate. In a world of frothing pants-on-head crazystomm, He or she is the law.

And, folks: WE CANNOT SEE HIS/HER FULL FACE. Trying to de-helmet Dredd is a bannable offence, in this fan's opinion.

Totally worth coming out of forum retirement for! It's been a long time since I've done one of these, so lower expectations accordingly:

As you can see, I decided to make the eagle motif a bit stronger, like it's enveloping him. The helmet was designed to be shaped a little more like an eagle head. Extra armour, too, to deal with enhanced threat levels.

@Anchorbeard: I didn't know much about Judge Dredd either. But I am a researcher. So I've been doing some research on the Internet and bought an old special of Dredd classics from the book exchange. It's helped me to get the gist of the character and get to grips with his costume.

This is my first post, the opportunity to remodel Dredd was too good to pass up. A hard task as the original uniform is so iconic and visually arresting (pun was unintentional I assure you). I decided to make the uniform more practical giving Dredd back his peripheral vision and maneuverability with a bit more protection from rogue 'Futsies' with fully automatic firepower.

Hullo! I went for a streamlined, more heavily 'futuristic' Dredd, and tried to carry the Eagle symbol across more predominately. I also wanted to maintain the sense of a 'Uniform' as opposed to a suit only Dredd would wear. A design detail I wish I could show in an image is his name tag and Police rank would scroll across like a digital banner and his red parts would light up in silhouette!

The hammer/blade to the left is just there to clarify what is on her badge - it combines a gavel for being judge, dots for a jury, and a blade for being executioner (all pulled together on a badge for her being part of a police force). I streamlined the costume a lot because I wanted something more practical for being able to quickly respond to ongoing criminal activity, and the helmet is made to look a little more like an executioner's hood without impeding helmet functionality.

Also, no ridiculous heels!

@dnewling: I know from previous exchanges you're keen to get some useful feedback, so let me remind you just here - for your benefit and everyone else's - that this is a REMAKE/REMODEL thread. Your entry looks great and, yes, is pretty funny, but you've simply drawn Dredd as he currently exists. That's called fan-art. The rules at the top of the thread make it very clear that what we're interested in is a new look.

It's great that you're involved in every new challenge, but - dude - read the rules.

I'd be more than happy for you to enter another image to fit the criteria. If you want to do so, make sure you delete your initial one first, okay? One entry only.

Wow - so many great entries.

I decided to start from scratch rather than work with the existing design. The helmet now includes various technical capabilities such as gas mask/filtration system, comms system and night vision/infra red etc. The body suit is armoured and padded for day to day riot control and the truncheon is barbed, spiked and electrified.

Need to fix a couple of bits on the drawing but i won't have time before the deadline so i thought it was better to colour it up and submit and fix it later -espescially as it's just a concept drawing.

Technically I consider being able to drew so well as cheating but then so many people in this thread would be guilty of this crime only Dredd himself would have the energy to bring you all in.

@Mhengla: If you think you are of negligible artistic talent, you might like to try 'drawing on the right hand side of the brain' (book and workshops based on the book). Many people who thought they didn't have artistic talent really surprised themselves after trying this technique. I took a course and it improved my artwork tremendously.

Hello everyone. I heard of this challenge on the 2000AD blog and decided to give it a shot. Man, there's so many awesome and creative entries! Mine's a bit boring, though. I tried to go with a riot-police vibe, a simpler, high-tech suit, and more of a "faceless" look. I didn't want to get too adventurous on it, so that's why I kept some of the original colors here and there. I have a little mental list of the suit's specifications but it'd be too long and boring, hah. So, yeah. Thanks for looking!

@Flabyo I'd bet my willy we are going to see more Dredd toys than you can shake a stick at next year. We are in the slack time before the momentum really builds for the film as old licenses will have largely lapsed and new ones are being negotiated (you'd have to assume). It is a bit too early at the moment but the announcements will surely start to roll out soon.

Also the 3A deal must surely involve a fancy Dredd action figure at some point, I'd imagine they are just building up to it, so it drops closer to the film.

Hey,

Molcher FBed the thread link earlier this week - it's moved on apace since then.

My last attempt at something like this was to put Dredd on a skysurfing board.

This time it's Feudal Japan - I made the same connection Mr. Sizer did - somewhere between Akira Kurosawa and Colin MacNeil you might find Samurai Joe.

@ Paul Sizer, thanks for the props - I'm feeling the subtle colour palette and hint of bloody ultra violence in your piece.

Been getting back into traditional materials this year and decided to make a fully painted image - however once scanned I also wanted to try stripping out all but the essential visual information.

Have really enjoyed following the thread - still hope to see Matt's Rechtpanzer before close of tomorrow.

@Paime77: I wonder what would happen if we incorporated those Jury Boxes into our legal systems? Ah well, I guess it couldn't hurt - everyone knows our legal systems are crap. Too lenient or too harsh, letting the guilty walk on technicalities or whatever, some innocent people get sent down - and just too bureaucratic, slow, and expensive.

In a surprise and delightful twist, I've asked the honourable MR AL EWING to pick his eight favourites for the Bleedingcool slot. Al is a long-time writer of Judge Dredd, and widely acknowledged as second only - in terms of writing "canonical" and "status-quo-altering" tales - to Dredd's creatorJohn Wagner. Also he's great. And mad. But great.

So, yeah. Look for the selection on B/C soon, and many congratulations to everyone: a bloody marvellous group of entries.

The courts are currently social tools used to oppress the poor. The human element while meant to grant MERCY to justice, grants leniency to those who fit the image of a good person. I am reminded of one of the quirks of the early justice system -- in middle ages Europe, I believe, but a variation was used in the US Old West. The ability to recite Bible verses could cause one to be set free from most crimes, because it was believed that a good Christian could not commit crimes. We have the technology to capture the true perpetrators of most crimes, some jurisdictions lack the funding to have the equipment, but others prefer to go after the usual suspects.
