I spent the weekend hanging out with rope bondage aficionados. There will be a few shots of me, but mostly I hid behind the camera.

Not sure I want my photography to bend this way; I can handle a bunch of bloody/bruisy self-portraits, but I don't want to get into that naked-chick-objectification thing too heavily. Still, the rope textures are nice.

@vornaskotti. Thanks. Yesterday morning was better, the colours paler with the street lights still on. Sort of looked like chinese lanterns. Didn't have my camera with me unfortunately. The one feature I'm loving with the DSLR is playing with the ISO settings. Something, obviously, limited to a single film with a standard SLR, or carrying several cameras. These sunrise ones were ISO3200

I found a new hill to climb last week - Harting Down, West Sussex, it's only a few miles away, and very beatiful. The third shot shows the view down to the Channel. First time the camera had been used for anything other than happy snaps in weeks if not months.

@Jehrot, those are gorgeous man. Are you editing them in Photoshop? I only ask because the top one has some visible 'halo effect' around the mountains. For darkening the sky to bring out color or cloud detail I recommend using the gradient tool and a layer mask so that the transition is smoother and looks more realistic. IF you use Lightroom, try the graduated filters to darken the sky. Or if you want to do it in camera pick up a circular polarizer for your lens. Not trying to be nitpicky or critical, I really like your shots and just want to offer advice. Keep the good work coming!
Also, nice score with the telescope! That thing is beautiful!

Thanks for the positivity dudes! And, yeah. That halo obviously comes across as a lazy edit (which it was) rather than a cool effect (wishful thinking). I'm using Aperture to edit, there's definitely some graduated filters I can try in there. I'd love to grab a polarizer though. Next purchase perhaps.

Do you like Aperture? I auditioned Aperture and Lightroom at the same time when it was time for me to migrate out of the dreaded iPhoto. I felt like Aperture was clumsy and inelegant, a beefier version of iPhoto. It ate up my hard drive space like crazy too. I just never liked it and pretty much the only thing that was good for me was the ease of migration. Ultimately I settled on Lightroom, though it was a nightmare to migrate to, but I have never looked back. I love it and find it to be a very powerful and elegant piece of software.

I don't want to incite a devolution in this thread to talking about the tools of the trade, I am just genuinely curious what people's thoughts are about the tools that they use. I have spent the last two weeks editing furiously for competitions and clients and I am doing the same right now, deadline for PDN is tomorrow. Glass of whiskey in hand I shall be up the whole night editing until I am either too drunk to fuck (so to speak) or finished completely. I find that LR uses the resources of my now 5 year old Macbook pretty well considering its age and relatively low processing power. Whooo, ok. Pouring another glass and getting back to work!

Talking about the tools isn't a devolution of the thread. That's why it's the Photography Thread and not the Photo Gallery Thread. I don't make any money on pictures, so I try to do everything in camera as much as possible (live view is a godsend for that), only using UFRaw for exposure adjustments on any RAWs I might take. The hard part is remembering to shoot RAW, since usually I only use that for astrophotography, and I haven't been out to do any of that since last July.

I made a resolution to go out and take a picture every day, and then broke it after a week because I got bored with going outside in Phoenix. I'll maybe get back into it when I start riding my bike to work.

Mostly doing everything through Photoshop, but I know that I should try Lightroom (or Aperture) ... but the less I change my pictures the happyer I am.

Just bought a Canon GS12 and I've read in the instructions that shooting directly at the sun may hurt it ... true ?

In 2010 Lex Machina suggested Lightroom to me and in all honesty, I've never looked back. It's nice to have all the shots I took in one easily navigable place and the adjustments, while needing some getting used to (ESPECIALLY since I've recently upgraded to LR3 and can now work with RAW photos), is just wonderful to have.

As a side discussion, where is a good place you folks go to get the skinny on upcoming photography competitions?

I use lightroom, but my editiing, more and more, strives to be as little visibly "effected" as possible. I miss the complication of photoshop because a lot of what i WANT to change in a photograph is to edit away clutter, or shift the placement of things to better fit my OCD aesthetic of space, or change the relationship between colors in a way that lightroom isn't designed for. However, it's been a long time since I've bothered to do that, instead trying to instill in myself a sense of forethought and getting-it-right-the-first-time. But graduated filters are a godsend at times!

I think I like the process of fine tuning my photographs, though. Shifting and cleaning. It makes them feel more like it's an image that I took part in, rather than simply had a camera in my hands at the right moment.

@RobSpalding There's been a lot of talk about this recently in a Flickr group i'm a member of - basically your RAW file is what the camera records straight from the sensor and is, well, raw, it needs processing digitally to produce a nice viewable picture. You can do this in camera, in fact for most compacts that's the only option you get, or if you've got something that will let you export the RAW file directly, you can have a go yourself with suitable processing software. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom are popular though there are others, GIMP is a free, open source alternative that has plugins like UFRAW that will do the job for some RAW files (oh yes, each manufacturer, in some cases each camera,produces a different, proprietory and mutually incompatible type of RAW) but might be a bit fiddly - bit too complicated for my poor brainsses. Now if you know what you're doing and have the patience to spend time working on your pictures you will generally end up with more detailed, nicer looking results than you can get straight from the camera - though some of the in camera converters are rather good and if you spend a bit of time setting them up the difference can be surprisingly small sometimes. The important thing is that the results you get depend on your skill with the software and how good it is in the first place - not all RAW converters are the same and it's quite easy to spend ages buggering up a perfectly good picture if you're not too familiar with how it all works. Or is that just me?
RAW files are also BIG, though that's not so much of an issue these days as memory cards and hard discs are getting bigger too.
I think most cameras that do RAW give you the option to save a JPEG along with the RAW file, that's the one i use, even though i usually stick with the camera JPEGs i've still got the RAW file to play with if i fancy chancing my arm and trying to be a bit clever or need to sort things out because i forgot to change the camera settings for colour or noise reduction or suchlike.

TL:DR: JPEG small, fast, easy, pretty good. RAW big, slow, fiddly, best results if you're good at it.

@david, thanks for making me feel better about that. Honestly, I sometimes forget I am at Whitechapel and not Photo.net, where snark reigns supreme. Also, nice shots! Glad to see that Phoenix is treating you well, photographically speaking.

As far as RAW is concerned, roadscum nails it. I have been shooting almost exclusively in RAW for the last couple of years because hard drive space is cheap and the possibilities that you have for editing are endless. jpg compresses the color space of the image, and usually in a pretty good way, all things concerened. Jpgs 'pop' more because the contrast is greater. I shoot in RAW because all of the editing that you do on the image is non-destructive. LR4 is about to come out of beta and usually that means a new engine for processing RAW, which can dramatically change the image quality. If, years from now, I decide that I don't like the edit I did on a picture, I can reset the values and start from scratch using all of the shiny new tools at my disposal. Every time you edit a jpg it degrades the image and that is a major shortfall for me because I tend to revisit my images every now and then to see if I missed anything and pull something from the archive to edit and breathe new life into. With RAW I know that the image is safe. It is a like a negative, unchanging and just sitting there waiting for you to do something new with. Also, if you failed to get the white balance that you wanted in the original you can shift it easily with a RAW file. It takes one whole step out of the things I have to worry about when I am shooting because I can usually just fix it later. Not that i don't try to get everything right in-camera first but hey, I'm only human.
One last thing, RAW gives you +/- 2 stops to play with if your exposure is off and the ability to import directly into PS as a smart object to delay as long as possible making critical and irreversible edits.

Again, apologies for getting technical but I see so many amazing images in this thread and my curiosity gets the better of me about how they are made. OK, I have 3 and half hours til my deadline. Back to work/whiskey.

@Rob: What roadscum said. RAW is the only way to avoid any and all noise reduction that the camera will do, and noise reduction on astrophotos can be very bad, since it'll tend to blur out a lot of the smaller, dimmer stars. Though I actually find that it's less of a problem with my D7000 than it was on my D50, just because the resolution is so much higher.

But the other big benefit of RAW is changing the exposure in post, so if my tracking rig isn't perfectly aligned (which it never is because it's a bodge job done by attaching a cheap Orion tabletop polar mount and a motor to my old tripod, so I have no ability to fine tune the horizontal axis), I can do an exposure just long enough to hit the edge of when the star trailing becomes noticeable, and then increase it in UFRaw to make up the difference (this is especially useful when shooting on any lens longer than 28mm). Doing so will bring some noise into the image, but not (I think) as much as if I'd doubled the ISO setting and kept the same exposure. Plus I can tweak the curves to make the stars brighter and the blank sky darker, too.

@Bankara The one complaint I have with Aperture at the moment is the way it takes control of your library. I run a dual-boot OSX/Win 7 machine, and if I want to access my RAW masters from Windows they're a bastard to find. Other than that, I find to be pretty slick and intuitive. It probably helps that my hardware is only a year old, and hard drive space isn't an issue. I'm very new to photography/editing though, so I'm still trying to find out what sort of workflow works best for me! Good luck in your comps!

@Jehrot, I was using the first version of Aperture and I am certain they have worked out some of the kinks by now. It did seem to utilize a lot more space for what it was supposed to be doing and it would use up entirely too much of my computers resources, much like iPhoto. I also use a netbook as my 'on the road' editing book and I can create catalogs in LR and then bring them over to the Mac with no difficulty, which I absolutely adore. We'll see how it functions once I begin my next big project of building a Hackintosh Mac Pro tower for photo and video editing. I am thinking of making it dual boot with two SSD's one OSX and the other W7 and keeping only applications and OS related files on them. All other assets will be on RAIDS. One of the beautiful things about this project is that I can make use of the external drives that I have that use eSATA. Since Mac killed Firewire they haven't done anything to replace it and I am tired of waiting for USB3 to be something real and usable. I am generally frustrated with the direction Apple has gone in recent years with their design philosophy and I would outright switch to Windows at this point just so that I could have more control. *End Rant*

@Rachael: Yup, just about sums it up to me, the gear keeps getting better and easier to use, to the point where just about anybody can produce a half decent picture without needing to know the ins and outs of it all. Result: lots more photography, many fewer professional photographers. And the world moves on.

Wow, that piece is pretty bang on but really only as it relates to Photojournalism and weddings and stock photography. Traditionally, these have been areas where you are hiring the photographer because he has a better camera than you and probably knows how to use it. When you take the gear out of the equation it really does seem to me that we are entering an entirely new era of image making. I saw this coming down the pike when I was taking courses in photojournalism in art school and decided to get the fuck out of that field. The only smart thing that my professor said in that course was that there will always be a market for good images, just figure out who wants to buy them. Part of the problem is that we are seeing a decline in the asking price because of the ubiquity of images in popular media. Publications need them but they increasingly feel like they shouldn't have to pay for them. The perception is that the visual literacy of the public is also at a stunning all time fucking high right now but I think that there is a laziness to it. People are consumers of images not connoisseurs, they see literally hundreds of images everyday and they think that they actually see them but they really don't because they walk right by them with the assumption that they have absorbed the image. There is so much clutter that they miss any of the sophistication. The reason for this is they think it is easy, they look at it and think 'I could shoot that' and the good news for those of us who try to make a living with our cameras is they really fucking can't. Shit, half of the creative people I work with are fucking stunned when I break down how an image is lit or even the basics of how a camera functions. Most peoples eyes glaze over when I tell them I spent 2 hours in retouch on a single image and that that was a rush job.

What is funny is that I see a lot of photographer retreating into film as a way to increase their 'legitimacy'. 4x5 and Medium Format are still enjoying popularity even among younger photographers who grew up in the digital era. Mostly, it is because potential clients are still scared shitless of shooting blind. Not having that LCD screen means not knowing whether you got the shot and anyone who can pull it off still gets credit from people who would otherwise think 'I could do that'. I see a lot of horseshit masquerading as art because it was shot on a 4x5. Yes, it is difficult to use but fucking come on! A shit image is a shit image no matter what it is shot on. I have a friend who is a cinematographer who takes better pictures with instagram then most of these fucking wankers with their 4x5s. If they shot with a digital camera no one would look at it twice and that is the only standard by which to objectively judge images. It isn't the equipment, it is the eye of the photographer and their technical skill either enhances or detracts from the image.

So, TL;DR. Photography is fine, photographers are going to be fine as long as they always remember that they are fucking idiots and egomaniacs for thinking that someone should pay them to do what they would have done anyway for free and that they sure as fuck didn't get into the business because they thought they were going to be rich. Images are getting better even as people are taking them more for granted. We are entering the golden age, accept it and adapt or die, motherfuckers.

In all seriousness, I pretty much agree with what you said, Bankara. I'm pretty far from being a serious photographer, and shoot more for my own entertainment than anything else, and while I like film, it always puzzles me to run into people still trying to use film in a professional setting.

I agree and disagree with various bits of that Reddit post.

One thing that professional photographers tend to have is good people skills. I'd hate to do PR/event photography (I've done it and I hated it...), mainly because I don't have the kind of personality that does stuff like that well. I've got huge respect for that. I can take a good picture, yes, on my own terms, but I can't corral people into doing what I want very well, and the press guys can do that brilliantly. The other thing is consistency - if you hire someone you trust and brief them well, they will normally turn out what you need. I don't trust myself to deliver that any more, I'm too rusty with that kind of work. If I commission a photographer, yes, I'm looking for great, usable pictures, but I'm also hiring them so they don't fuck things up.

I think it's a shame that the business is going for them, on the other hand, some of these guys are stuck in a business model that hasn't kept pace with what clients expect or can justify to the people setting the budgets.

A colleague recently asked a photographer for permission to use pics he'd taken for my company some 18 years ago in a local archival display. He sent an extremely rude letter back saying 'of course you can't, they're mine and whatever rights you had have expired, I've got to eat, and you wouldn't expect me to take goods from you on the promise of just a credit'. Which was factually correct, and I have total sympathy with the sentiment, but utterly dickish, because a) there was no conceivable commercial value in those pics other than to us, and b) if he'd just said 'sure but I'll charge a couple of hundred quid', I'm sure we would have paid it, and c) we'll never use the guy ever again for anything because he's been a dick. And d) we had the decency to ask and respect his copyright, rather than just go ahead and use the pictures. So those people will die out. Very few people will book people for PR/editorial work for single use stuff, especially not when budgets are tight.

The thing with gear is that for certain types of work, yes, I think it does matter. Again, it's one reason why I refuse to do 'pro' type jobs for work (which are usually pr type shots), because I don't have a decent off camera flash of my own and I can't often get away with available light. The popup flash on my D200 is useless for serious work. I don't have a fast short zoom either. Yes, if I was doing beautiful arty portraits like Jane Bown who has shot everything at 1/60th at f2.8 for fifty years then gear wouldn't be so important - but shooting a conference or something like that where you're going to need battery packs and stuff - I think it's hard to compete with that.

The bit about RAW files and post processing - I don't understand what he's angling at there - yeah, I'd agree that adding things in is unethical, but is he suggesting that every editorial/photojournalistic work should be untouched, uncropped and just as it came out of the camera? What about black and white? That changes things? Should there be a compulsory panoramic view around every image so you can see what the photographer left out of the frame?

All in all - I'm glad I took a decision not to try for a career in photography; much happier just doing it for myself.

I am not knocking film per se, I love film and old cameras and I shoot with them as often as my budget will allow. I just see a trend towards using film in the professional circles in a precious way that pisses me off because then it claims to be some kind of high art thing when frequently it is just an uninteresting shot. When film was all there was no one would have paid any attention to it but now it is like some kind of fucking miracle because it was shot on film! I am totally guilty in my nostalgia and reverence for film and there are plenty of people who use it to make incredible work but there is also this trend that I find wholly distasteful because it just masks the lack of actual talent or thought going into it by invoking that nostalgia and reverence. It is hard to explain but please don't get the idea that I am anti-film, I am just anti-bullshit. Each one of my old film cameras makes me shoot in a different way and I love that process of having my perceptions altered by the equipment. Mostly this is because of the limitations of each camera making me have to really think hard about how best to capture whatever scene is in front of me, forcing me to be more creative.

I ran a roll of 220 through a Mamiya RZ67 that I have on long term loan and I am loving the thing. I have never had a proper medium format and it is just such a joy to use. Not really a good street camera though since it is the size of a cinder block and just as heavy. I think I need to do a few more rolls in various different settings before I feel comfortable using it for a project. I will post any decent results from these sessions and you folks can call bullshit or hypocrite on me if you see me doing precisely what I describe above.

Ooooh, Hassies are nice. I have used them a couple of times and they are just sweet little machines. Can't afford one though so for years I have been shooting 120 with the Soviet knockoff, the Kiev 88. Looks exactly the same, doesn't quite produce the same results...

@JP Carpernter, seconded! Most places that develop 120 will scan it for you for about the same as the price as getting the film developed, if not less.

Using film because you think it makes you superior to an equally competent photographer using digital is just dickish. Gear only contributes so much.

Alright, glad that I clarified my statement. I mostly shoot digital for commercial assignments because of the realities of turnaround. I shoot film for my own satisfaction and enjoyment. I realy want to learn to use this camera well because it is a beautiful piece of equipment and can produce work superior in quality to what my digital can. My next project (personal, I should add) is going to be shot on it.

I agree with Mr. Carpenter that a lot of the hand wringing over the decline of the business of photography is from folks who refuse to adapt to the times. That guy he mentioned missed out on a chance to ring the till twice for work already completed because he was just being an ass.

Since this is intended to be a photography thread and not a philosophical debate about photography I will try to restrain myself to posting photos and comments related to photos posted. Honest, I will. It is just tough because I do kind of miss having these drunken debates with my classmates from art school. Whaddayawant? I am an art nerd.

I think that Reddit guy, though he was self-aware about it and apologized it, was mostly just an old fogey complainin' about the kids these days. It's certainly true that the profession is just about dead, unless you're doing glossy fashion spreads (and then you're just documenting amazing fashion and makeup work), or you're Ed Burtynsky. But I'm angrier about the ease of publishing online. I don't want to see another hazy beach scene or generic landscape as long as I fucking live. If people were just shooting and posting on Facebook, that'd be one thing. But having a Flickr and a bunch of gear seems to convince people of their own authority, and that's what gets me.

@bankara you mentioned earlier that you use a netbook occasionally for editing when you're on the road. how does lightroom perform on that machine? I'm currently more or less stuck with a netbook as my main computer, and the RAW processing program that came with my digital is nightmarishly slow to use on this box, and doesn't allow me to really do what I need to do anyway. I'd like to know how slow it's going to be before I go off spending good money on the software, and netbook specs are pretty uniform, so what you see is likely to be a good indicator of any issues I might run into.

It was pretty sluggish but the ability to edit on the fly was priceless for me. No fancy MacBook Air can I afford so a crappy HP210 bought off the back of a truck (scooter actually) in India is what I ended up with. Still for 200 bucks the ability to create catalogs and do basic editing as well as back up my work to an external HD was totally worth the sometimes sluggish performance. I would only really recommend it if you are going to be on the road for a very long time (think months) and don't want to resort to editing all of your work in internet cafes. My specs were 1GB RAM and a crappy atom processor so the first thing I did was strip out the OS and put Windows 7 Ultimate edition on it. In hindsight, XP would have used the resources more efficiently and would have given me less grief.
It would choke a little bit but it really worked fine and the battery life was amazing on those 30 hours train rides so I could write, watch movies, and edit my work. It actually runs lightroom pretty well but I atribute that to the fact that it is a well designed program. Hope this helps somewhat.

Glad to be of service! I have since dumped a 2GB RAM card into it to try to improve performance and haven't seen much of a difference. However, I did make a hackbook a while back out of a Lenovo 10e and it ran OSX like a champ! The next best thing to a MacBook Air, at a 5th of the cost. Runs LR great, everything works fine except the internal mike. Installation was a breeze, but i have done this a few times. The problem is that you have buy an older model to get it to run OSX but since the specs have not really changed all that much in netbooks it isn't an issue.

I love where I am immensely and that probably shows in my pictures... I'm not a city lover at all, which is why I endure a 4hr round trip to London to work. We did live in a town centre for a couple of years and while I liked some aspects of it (convenience, a station next door), I felt really, really claustrophobic. Since we've moved I've been far happier - having the sea a ten minute drive away is one of the best medicines I can think of and I couldn't bear to be without it again.

Allana and I briefly talked about this last night and I thought I'd ask you folks to see what you thought of the idea.

So, the R/R threads are amazing and all, but unless you have models, costumes and several other things on hand, it makes it a bit difficult for a photographer to get his/her shit together for it.

And the Art of Fast Fiction...well, Budgie has made it clear that 100% photographic posts are not welcome.

So how about a Photography Challenge thread? Every week or two we put up a challenge (a concept or...well, whatever we can agree on to make these accesible) and work with that?

So the other question would be "what kind of challenges would you like to see?"

Personally, I like interpretive photographic challenges that are simple but can be done so many times. Colours or single words. That type of thing. Also, perhaps experiment with challenges based on specific styles (similar to the David Lynch poster R/R)?

I'd say one a month, actually. (I'm doing a challenge now that's a new theme every two weeks, and I'm falling a bit behind, and those are just self-portraits. Also, seriously, there's enough range of talent and style in the R/R and other drawing threads that I don't think anyone should be worried about trying their hand at photography challenges. It's more practice than contest, I think.

I think a mix of simple challenges along with things that have more depth/narrative/something might be a more fair compromise. While I like exercises that force me to leave my house too, I also like rethinking a simple concept and adding as much depth/narratice/something as I'd like.

As for what the challenges are, how about setting up some kinf od e-mail pool, where anyone can submit an idea and when it comes to challenge time, one is chosen at random?

Now meself, i'm not really interested in 'contest', either as observer or participant, i just like to see the weird, wonderful and sometimes breathtaking stuff people here come up with when they're given an idea to play with. I'm interested by this idea. I endorse the challenge-not-contest idea, and a long-ish timelimit. On consideration, a month seems ok.

Also, on each challenge's subject: The usual approach for this sort of thing seems to be a very short & gnomic instruction, e.g. "red", "circles", etc. - but that seems a bit tired at this point. Perhaps, instead, we could use a poem or a short quotation or a song or even a painting as the subject? That way you'd still have a lot of room for interpretation, but more possible directions to head off in. And it might be a bit more interesting than 30 pictures of an object that is red and/or circular.

Thoughts?

In for a penny, in for a pounding. This sounds like fun but I agree that what makes the R/R thread work is that the artists work from a concept and expand on it. This could be a bit like the 'guest directed self' project, where a direction is given and interpreted by the photographers. I love the idea of a challenge but contests and judging don't seem like much fun or productive for getting some of our camera toting lurkers to contribute and feel like they are getting something out of it. We're all winners here when we challenge ourselves.

Good question and that's what needs to be figured out. My first thought goes to what I said earlier, an e-mail dump where anyone can send in an idea and then once a month or so, we choose one.

I'm in favour of being given the name of a genre and going with that, as well as a direction of creating a photo that somehow involves a single prop. As well as concepts, quotes, short stories and poems, as was mentioned earlier.

Wow, dudes, you sorta dropped the ball on the reading comprehension, there.

If we keep using the GDSP as an example, their prompts are completely open. Everyone submits one when their time comes, and it's been everything from single word to detailed limb-by-limb positioning. I'm sure we'll all come up with things suitably diverse, left to our own devices. Thumbs-up for an email dump.

(That said, in line with the R/Rs, I'd love to do some inspired-by-a-fictional-character stuff, myself. Not necessarily portraits with models, but collections of esoterica or scenes would be fine. Even if we have to caption our shit to get the point across.)

Si mentioned something like this back in October, and I think the general consensus was the same. it'd be a good idea, and I'm pretty sure most people here would enjoy the challenge, but we all seem distinctly paranoid that it'll turn into a contest, so there's going to have to be an explicit "NO, you DO NOT get a prize for making the pretty pictures" disclaimer in the rules. Definitely go with a monthly schedule, as it often takes me a month to remember that I've got a roll of developed film sitting at the shop waiting for me to pick it up, and I might get to my good computer with time to process my digital stuff every other week, and I'm terminally lazy and absentminded and liable to not walk out the door with a camera and time to think about what I'm doing until it's the worst time to shoot whatever I come up with.
Pick a subject, put in some basic rules (say, no more than two or three photos per person? or just one, to make everybody really think), make the post, and we'll see how it goes. I'd suggest the first subject be "mayhem," from the last word of bankara's post, but since it's mardi gras down here in new orleans, it'd be a bit too easy for me.

Another thing to maybe think on is the number of entries per photographer. My gut tells me it might be smart to slap on a reasonable limit, so as a) not to drown out folks who have fewer shots and b) to also get people to focus on whittling down the material to the absolute best shots. I don't really see this as much of a problem, but I know that I have a nasty tendency to go overboard, and limits are edumacational.

@allana: The last photo from the earlier post is of a shrub that looks familiar to me. I can't remember the name of it (I believe it starts with an S), but it is on the hill leading to the beach at my mom's house, and I think you can make a drink from the fuzzy red stuff. So I was taking some pictures for eBay auctions and came across a pretty useful tidbit: the inside of a Lowepro camera bag seems to be pretty darn close to the shade of an 18% gray card. So I took out a spare divider and used it to test exposure, since I don't have a gray card handy (I know): presto, seems like it worked great! Photos needed no adjustment, exposure was dead-on (being colorblind, I can't attest to the color balance). Am I the last person to know about this? Is this a thing?

@allana: Remember that bush with the red fuzzy stuff that I mentioned? It's a sumac tree.

Edit: If you ever decide to use the red fuzzy stuff, make sure it's not from a poison sumac tree (which is similar to poison ivy, poison oak, etc).
