    [Edit -- appreciate y'all getting on with this on your own, folks. Apologies for absenteeism: Christmas boozefest ran-on longer than anticipated. --Si.]

    If you're in Paris, you need to go to the Louvre and see 'Raft Of The Medusa', by French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault. Read the story at the link, it's fascinating and horrifying in equal measures.

    Oh, is this painting only famous in France, then ? It's, like, part of popular culture around here, being highly referenced and parodied in comics, for example.

    As here, in Asterix :

    It features in at least one chapter of A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes.

    Regarding Dorkmuffin's above post, I saw the "OH CHEEKY CHEEKY" balloon and joy filled my heart.

    But my body violently rejects sentimentality, and I give you this, in hope that crude CGI will purge my system of this unwanted intruder. This might have shown up on a IDNTST thread. Don't recall.

    It took me until 1:25 to figure out what that silvery stuff was. I just couldn't work out what was weird about it... then...

    @TheEndsOfInvention

    A traditional thing to do when ice diving is to get up to the ice cover, go as far as your safety rope allows (as in your have a rope attached to you and a partner above the ice holding the other end), turn upside down, put your fins against the ice and signal the buddy to pull you up as fast as he can. Whooo, surfing on the ice and popping up from the hole legs first :P
