I'm gonna try and do more comics/cartoons this year. I find them very tricky to do, lots of rubbing out and redrawing and correcting in photoshop. Something about those panels makes them harder than normal illustrations.*

After speaking with a few of my industry friends, it came to light that showing sketch work like my DC logos could be seen as kind of a dick move, as I had none of the constraints and requirements of the designers who worked on that project, so me coming in with a new design as I did might be seen as belittling fellow designers in the industry, and that was not my intent. Thanks for the good words, though, it was interesting to do.

Your call of course, and you are a gentleman for even being concerned about it. But showing your interpretation of a brand logo is not dickish. There are whole blogs filled with people's reimaginings of other designers work, especially when the principle work leaves so many unhappy - only thing that might seem 'dickish' to the team responsible for the peel logo, is yours was better. Which is not dickish really, just sour grapes if so. I'll bet they are bigger than that though.

Large companies go to large branding firms because part of what they are buying is that firm's ability to maintain and fulfill all of the requirements that are attached to using a logo system nowadays. It's not just creating a logo and handing off a disc of Illustrator files, it's being on tab for DC's gazillion needs for using and insuring full and proper use of a huge system like that. After years of having friends and students working in firms like this, it boggles the mind to find out all that goes into maintaining a corporate identity, especially one that has just launched. If it took a year to develop that logo system, it will literally be another year for Landor to ensure the mark is out and used properly in all of the applications it will be needed in, from being put on kid's underpants to making sure it looks awesome when it appears in the opening titles to THE DARK KNIGHT RISES this summer.

That being said, I also know one and two person studios that work with really big companies and make it work. Usually though, big companies use this line of thinking: "Well dammit, we just spent 6 million dollars, so of course it's a great logo system that will fulfill all of our needs."

And with all of that, I agree with your assessment: designing the mark to work for everything, it ends up getting diluted. Designer Paula Scher once said that good design doesn't really come from communal thinking, it comes from really good focused singular vision. A Milton Glaser or Saul Bass, someone who can drive an idea all the way to the end, is a rare commodity. They do exist, and they produce great work, but they are also risky to a big company who is literally sinking millions into a design. In a sense, they want to buy the assurance their mark is exactly what they need.

I have massive respect for graphic designers who work within that framework, but there is also a reason I've worked solo for 18 years and keep my practice simple. Nice print Fishelle. And even my shitty phone camera can do surprisingly big resolutions, they still look like a blurry mess though.
