@oldhat SKYRIM is one of my favorite games in a while, but its by no means graphically fancy.
my preferred first person game is PORTAL 2, which is gorgeous but not really a shooter. and its almost a year old, should be a cheap find. BULLETSTORM is also an older pretty game, albeit shallow and totally offensive haha
Well, $25 or under. Used, anyways. There's a lot! I'm looking at Gears of War 2, which is going for $14...or Modern Warfare 2, which is going for...I don't know, actually.
@oldhat: If you're looking for just shooting people's heads off then 'Modern Warfare 2' is a good choice. If you can pick 'World at War' or 'Black Ops', they're pretty good too. I'd second 'Borderlands' and 'Portal 2' as recommendations too.
If you can't get internet access for the XBox, I'd avoid a lot of Bethesda games like 'Fallout: New Vegas' and 'Skyrim'. They shore up the broken bits with updates and those updates are needed to keep down the frustration of constant freezing...
With 'L.A. Noire', while I have found the interrogation system frustrating, it wasn't enough to put me off. What got me were the poor elements of the control system - it being hideously clunky. The difference between the dazzling technology of the facial capture and the badly put together bodies that look slightly too small for the heads was also off-putting. And I have played it again.
If you're after something that's fun, looks pretty on a big tv, and is probably sitting in the bargain racks at Gamestop, then I'd say go with Just Cause 2.
That game is FAR more fun than it has any right to be.
If it must be first person though, hmm, maybe Crysis 2?
@oldhat - pick up a copy of Guilty Gear X for the original Xbox. Not the later versions, they're crap. Guilty Gear X is just so damn pretty, with gorgeous anime-style 2D artwork, that I still go back to it on the 360.
Play Faust and giggle like a maniac as you figure out the power moves.
@oldhat: Not a big FPS guy myself, but I do know that Vanquish is a lot of fun. Short game, but hella hectic and lean... As in, no unnecessary padding.
Gears of War 2 is generally considered to be the best of the GoW games, and one hell of a visual spectacle too.
@Beamish - It's fantastically done. I heard it described as "Batman Returns meets the Animated Series" which remains accurate in Arkham City. The stealth and combat are far better than their nearest equivalent (which is probably Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater. Which I also loved).
Anyone going to PAX Prime this year? I'm being infected by friends' excitement over it and am succumbing. I've even made my hotel reservations. It will be the first convention of any kind for me. I'm a little scared. Someone hold me?
Tore through a chunk of my backlog over the past couple of weeks. Finished Dead Island, which was pretty good (just shy of kinda great). Tons of content, lots of extremely gory zombie violence. In a lot of ways I think it's this generation's STALKER. Though I wish they would've given some more quality sharp weapons in the early game, because playing the edged weapon character and not getting a katana until very near the end is kind of frustrating. I need to try playing it in co-op now.
Also blew through the 'Missing Link' DLC mini-campaign thing for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It was a pretty excellent addition to the main game, and I hope they'll be able to release one or two more of these for this one, as I'd kind of hate for the new story threads they created in this one to be left alone until the full sequel.
I'm kind of bouncing off of DoWII: Retribution. They cut down the RPG aspects from vanilla and Chaos Rising and added some more traditional RTS elements that don't really work with the smaller scale of DoWII's missions, but I've only done the first two missions so maybe it opens up a bit later.
@Sleestack: I've gone to the last two PAX Primes, and I intend to go to this one. This year I won't be a ditz and I'll pick up my ticket as soon as they become available (had to rely on EBay last year... worked out in the end, but it was touch and go for a while).
I spent most of today on LittleBigPlanet 2. Updated my three accomplished levels from LBP1, both messing with the gameplay and adding some visual flair.
With one of the levels, I basically took out the whole first part and instead seriously went over the second part, since that was the GOOD bit. And then I filmed it with my phone camera.
