    Speaking of Mass Effect...

    The GAME group here in Europe is in real financial trouble. They've lost their credit insurance, and over the last couple of weeks they've not been able to stock certain titles as the publishers wouldn't sell them to them without the insurance (Tekken on 3DS, Last Story on Wii etc...)

    Now EA and Nintendo have basically pulled everything they have coming out in March from GAME.

    That's a LOT of cancelled ME3 pre-orders. And GAME were originally the only place to get the collector's edition here in the UK, they've now lost all those orders too as EA have shifted it to Amazon, Play, Zavvi and ShopTo.

    It seems it's time to stick a fork in GAME, they're done.

    That means there are no national specialist retailers selling videogames in the UK anymore. There are some regional chains around, but down here in the South all we have is HMV. Who are not in great health themselves.

    @vornaskotti

    The phrase "rage-quit shitfits" made me laugh out loud.

    I don't envy game designers at all, it's a very difficult balance. Sometimes I drop a game down to easy because I just want to kill some suckas, or get past a particularly tricky section and get on with the story. Other times... well I once spent an entire day playing co-op halo with my husband and all the skulls on and it was IMPOSSIBLY hard and very satisfying. Players are fickle. Or at least I am.

    As to tutorials... have you played the Skate 2 demo on xbl? It is fucking DREADFUL. I will never buy that game. I remember being intrigued by the first game but the tutorial in the demo for number two is so bad, the instructions so repetitive and... Yes I have been left to my own devices to learn a game through experimentation before now and missed some crucial element through sheer stupidity that would have made the whole thing more enjoyable/easier. But if you're going to point out the obvious you don't have to slap me in the face with it repeatedly.

    Been neglecting the console and Steam lately, out of "ugghhh I just sat down to check tumblr and now I'm too tired to leave the internet" mood. So, been playing games like Buffalo Bison: Revenge (sequel to a toss-the-turtle-style game; huge step up from the first one) and Lab of the Dead (basically "Day of the Dead: the Game"; you run experiments on zombies because the military begrudgingly lets you...)

    Trying to get into Final Fantasy XII-2 but I'm already reconsidering it as I just can't be arsed grinding any more. I'm hoping this is due to me not having the time anymore rather than being too old!

    Who else LOVED the Baldur's Gate series?
    I'm hoping it's not "just" an HD release of the games (although that would be pretty cool) and that there's something new and fun in the works.

    I just got the whole anthology pack (BG 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Planescape) because of this board and was having a hard time getting into the first one because the UI was so clunky/huge/slow until I found a mod that formats the first game to run like the second one and now we are in buisness.

    So yeah I am interested in seeing what the news is about

    @screaming meat - for some reason the big videogame publishers are really down on anything vaguely Victoriana at the moment. I'm aware of several excellent game concepts that can't find a backer simply because that's the style they're going for. People are told 'Steampunk is too cliché, we don't want that' despite the fact that setting doesn't *automatically* mean you're doing Steampunk.

    Just finished the Alan Wake's American Nightmare and I'd say it was well worth the money. Action was good and the script was also, although there's one point in it which you'll either see as a cheap trick and hate, or love because it makes for a good story and it's handled well in my opinion. Nice amount of bang for the buck...

    Actually, I really like the idea of setting ACIII during the revolution! They left plenty of clues in II for it, too - I mean, even ctrl+alt+del predicted it... man, at least a year and a half ago? The American Revolution is rife, RIFE I tell you, with whacked-out conspiracy theory googly-moogly. Heck, just by inhabiting northern Virginia I feel like I'm at the confluence of vast and terrible occult powers. Just take a look at how many signatories of the Declaration of Independence were freemasons. I'm seeing Ben Franklin setting our man in white up with his crazy inventions the way Leonardo did in ACII and Brotherhood, running horse chases somewhere between Trenton and Philadelphia, crawling along the rooftops of Boston during a raging nor'easter...

    Yeah. I'm down with this.

    I'll be honest though - I was kinda hoping we'd finally get to play a female Assassin.

    I don't think they'll ever do a female assassin while there's a guy in the VR-into-the-past seat. Would make it a bit too Quantum Leap for some people's tastes. "Oh, boy", indeed.

    You're probably right, especially considering this is the third game and AAA titles seem to like their trilogies almost as much as they like their space marines. Still, could've been cool.

    At this rate, we aren't going to reach the AC "future" until 2018 or so.

    Which is a little sad, considering that the future is set in 2012.

    Hell of a spoiler, right? We'll KNOW the world didn't end by then. Unless I'm right and the third game incorporates Desmond finally getting his shit together and actually doing what an assassin does.

    By which I mean basically anything that is not arguing about who stole Lucy's yogurt out of the mini-fridge.

    History Nerds Prove Me Wrong (Please)
    I went to a shitty public high school where the history books were published about a year after the revolutionary war, so I do not know, but was the architecture in America during that time really that esthetically pleasing? I just don't remember seeing many paintings where the buildings really popped like they do with Crusades or Renaissance era works.

    So if they can make Boston and New York from that era look as sprawling and epic I will be all for it. Just seems like a weird choice for such a parkour heavy series.

    Well, if you want to compare it to something like the Temple of Solomon or the Colosseum, in terms of sheer scale and artistry, you're right, it seems like an odd choice. Boston, Philadelphia, New York, those places aren't going to match Jerusalem or Rome in terms of vertical structure.

    On the other hand, I think the term you used, sprawling, will work just fine for the game. I've seen plenty of amazing parkour shot in small towns in England or France where the buildings were, maybe, four stories tall. I can already think of one environment for ACIII that makes me tingle just thinking about killing bad dudes in it: Boston harbor.

    If the rumours about the player being a Native American are true, I could easily see some sort of forest tracking and tree climbing mechanic being added.

    @Sleestak

    ...I may still have my save game files from the original Baldur's Gate series just before the final boss fight in the third expansion (where you learn your characters actual history and destiny). I have to admit, I still tear up after Minsc's final speech every time I hear it.

    DON'T YOU FUCKING JUDGE ME!
