    The Pirate Bay Shows Futility of Domain and DNS Blocks

    In October 2011, a court in Finland ordered local ISP Elisa to block The Pirate Bay to stop copyright infringement among its subscribers. Today, the blockade – which covers many domains and IP addresses – took effect, but behind the scenes there is an effort to unblock the site and render the court order useless. Meanwhile there is already collateral damage – the court order has succeeded in blocking a domain linking to Electronic Frontier Finland.

    Well, there's a lot of fuss in Iran I'm sure, but for the rest of the world I think the press (and the governments) are doing the equivalent of "Oh, no, that's such...a shame...right..." and breathing a sigh of relief like the sitcom actor who just "accidentally" broke something they found offensive.

    Back during the Occupy Protests were in full-swing a video came out of Oakland of an officer who had covered up his name badge with tape. Rumors were circulating that officers were doing that there to make it more difficult to be identified by people who were potentially abused by them. The man doing the video tape kept his distance and calmly asked the officer why he had his name badge covered. When the officer didn't respond, the man behind the camera approached a near-by lieutenant and asked him, pointing out that covering up the name plate is against the law (technically it's against the officer uniform code, which has no penalities associated with it). After the two of them spoke, the officer uncovered his name badge.

    Well, it seems that the two have been disciplined for it, the badge-covering officer getting a thirty day suspension (no word if it's a paid suspension or not), and the lieutenant has been demoted for not reporting the incident.

    @Beamish - that's a more balanced version of the piece than some I saw yesterday. Lots of news outlets were taking a very anti-Microsoft angle without any mention of Apple etc...

    @Flabyo The tweets I saw were more anti-Apple, which was strange because they linked to an article saying the workers were moved from an Xbox production factory.

    Teenage Girl Scout wants to boycott Girl Scout Cookies after a Colorado troop admits a transgendered child

    I would be tickled pink if girl scout cookie sales actually went up because of this. I know I plan on gorging myself on the damn things now.

    Not that it takes a lot to get me to eat girl scout cookies (so long as they used real girl scouts to make them... none of that imitation, MSG stuff for me, thanks).

    Kepler Observatory discovers 3 smallest exoplanets yet in miniature solar system.

    It's sort of crazy to think we've reached the point that the discovery of planets orbiting another star has become pretty commonplace, but this story is particularly interesting because it points to the increasing sensitivity and sophistication of our exoplanet detection tools. One can only fantasize about the detail of the observations we'll be making five, ten, fifteen years from now.

    I read something, somewhere, about a speculative future exoplanet observatory design (it involved having a massive solar sail in heliocentric orbit to block out glare or something, so it was pretty exotic) that would allow a telescope to see sunlight flashing off alien oceans.
