The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

-- This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.
-- No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. (Original photography is fine.)
-- No more than ONE submission by any one person.

We’re going to do something a bit different here. Rather than taking an idea or golden-age character and reinventing them as a Modern! Day! Super! Hero!, we’re going to take an ages-old superhero, throw away 90% of the background, and get Conceptual. This is important, pay attention:

You will not be redesigning Namor The Sub-mariner. Namor the Sub-mariner is an extant Marvel property and, hahaha, jiggering about with those isn’t what we do here, is it? No sir it is not. No no no. No, what you’ll be doing is taking a couple of notable niblets from his Origin Story – niblets which frankly aren’t even unique to him – and evolving them upwards into a Brand New Character. Which is a brilliant and inventive process which totally respects and pays homage to the original character, yes indeed, and won’t get us shot in the digital face by a C&D order. FUN.

    For what it’s worth:

Namor the Sub-Mariner is a fictional comic book character in the Marvel Comics universe, and one of the first superheroes, debuting in Spring 1939. The character was created by writer-artist Bill Everett for Funnies Inc. The child of a human sea captain and of a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor possesses the super-strength and aquatic abilities of the "Homo mermanus" race, as well as the mutant ability of flight, along with other superhuman powers.

Now forget you read that. Most of it, anyway. For the purposes of this challenge, there are just 18 words we’re interested in:

"The child of a human sea captain and of a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis.”

That’s your mission, my swampy loves. Make me believe that the character I’m looking at is half human, and half… other. Really and genuinely Of The Ocean. A briny being of bubbly brilliance, a nautical numpty, and similar alliterative bumsoup. Truly, a “mer/man”. Or maid, if you like. Or slut. Or spinster. Whatever.

Forget the Crime Fighting. Forget the spandex shtick. Definitely forget the brachycepahlic forehead and fruity ankle wings, which – as awesome as they may be – don’t shriek “oceanic life” to me.

    Build me a mythical marvel.

Er, let me get this straight. We don't remodel the Sub-Mariner himself - we invent a totally new character who is the product of crossbreeding between a sea captain and an Atlantean princess. And the character must do the Sub-Mariner and Atlantis proud. Yes, it took me a few minutes to get my head around these instructions, but I think I get it now.

I know what I'm doing for this one. AND I think I have the time to pull it off.

@Rootfireember: You've got me all eager to see what you come up with; it sounds really delicious!

I can't help but think of that old sea shanty...

My father was the keeper of the Eddystone light,
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night,
Out of this union there came three,
A porpoise and a porgy and the other was me,

    The Eddystone Light

    @Purple Wyrm

My wife sings that shanty to our son to get him to go to sleep.

@dnewling - I've already done some sketches for it and just. Oi. Fingers crossed.

Slightly tempted to post an image from the new Crossed webcomic - anyone who's seen the preview will know the one I mean - as a sort of "origin flashback" for this character. But I won't. Because some idiots still like dolphins.

Wot,like a sea captain tosses a baby-batter filled sex-balloon into the ocean after a posh wank and it gets shredded by a propeller. The life-tadpoles happen to come across a random "merslut's" egg.As the miracle of creation takes place it's ate by a basking shark. After gestating in said shark's innards the resulting creature is shat out only to be washed ashore on Blackpool Beach to end up being prodded by snotty nosed kids with sticks as it shrieks " me!".That sort of thing!?

That's what i would draw if i had a pencil...

Why did I never notice the "Ankle Wings" until now? I must not be terribly observant.
Will definitely try to enter this one by the way, should have some time for once :P
(note: I won't just draw Sharkpony and claim it's the Submariner, although the thought did occur to me)

Somehow I think I would like to see the offspring of Flecky's ideas with, say, Paul Sizer's artistic talents...

Seriously, I want to do a photographic entry for this SO BADLY. Why did you have to pick a nautical theme during Canadian winter? Blah.

(Alternatively, any models want to volunteer to lay on the rocks at the beach half-naked? I'll pay in whisky.)
