Intarwub Jeezus has offered up some predictions for 2012.

Since comments are closed there and he suggests discussing his musings on Whitechapel, well, here we are.

What most interested me is his predictions that "at least three sources" will be offering indie comics creators the ability to load up their comics into a storefront app in the e-book market. He doesn't specify whether that means Apple's market or Android's or Kindle or B&N's Nook, but this is something I've been hoping for a couple of years now. Especially since I seem to have the damndest time getting into any of the major comics storefronts (iVerse stopped talking to us for reasons unknown, we got hung up in a contract disagreement with Graphic.ly, Project Longbox imploded and ComiXology just plain refuses to answer my queries.)

Warren projects that these developments will create a "curatorial nightmare" but I'm not sure what he means by that.

Edited to add: That quote should be " ... the sort of curational crisis ...", not what I put in above. My apologies, Warren's page was behind a back-button and I feared if I left this page I'd have to start over again, so I ran with my faulty memory of his words.

 i assume he means that the effect of the 'vitual newstand' becomes almost impossible to browse or find anything when everyone has access to 'publishing' that way?

ie: my wife cannot browse the iphone app store in any useful way for random cool things because theres 8 billion of them

 @joe

Sorry to drop a deeply pretentious and over-stressed/over-loaded couple of words, but 'curation' and 'channels' ... = ... C21 'labels' and 'publishers' and 'broadcasters.' The waters might be hard to navigate for a while, sure, but waves will emerge. I hope.

EDIT TO SAY:

"...the sort of curational crisis you see when you browse for Kindle books by genre."

Undeniably true, and thereby I clamp myself. Yes, the ebook market is chaos, as are the storefronts of POD entities. Again though... I hope this is a transitional phase.

 I should also add (and correct myself a bit, again) that Amazon/Kindle already offers indie creators and publishers this ability to self-publish through Amazon's storefront. It's just that until the color Kindle, the platform has not at all been friendly to comics. I suspect that the screen size, though, will continue to be an issue, and may offer an advantage to indie creators/publishers that can more nimbly move to a suitably down-scaled format (about the size of mass-market manga, I think).

 Got an update of the software on my Kindle recently that talked about the introduction of a 'panel-view' feature for reading comics. Anyone tried it? I can imagine double-page spreads being horrible on the thing, in any case.

In a perfect world I would like the massive phone book sized b&w reprints of 'Essential' Marvel comics on my Kindle, but it doesn't look like that's available at the moment...
