Warren did this thread a while ago, and I thought I'd revive it myself. There's quite a few readers here on Whitechapel, but I'm among that there is a strong contingent of writers as well. Do you have books out? Can they be purchased? Tell us about yourself, your work, and where to get it.

I, myself, am an author, so I'll shamelessly start with my own work.

My first novel is titled The Icarus Void, and the short description is thus:

The crew of the Icarus is used to high-stress situations: their ship is designed to dive into the heart of a star to collect scientific data for research. But when they discover an alien artifact hovering in low orbit of the Sun, the attempt to retrieve it pushes them to the breaking point.

Captain Gordon Markov is more than happy to oversee his final mission on board Icarus. And Doctor Stephen Straub is more than happy to be a part of the prestigious research team assigned to the ship. Testing out the Icarus's new heatshielding is the plan, but the artifact in orbit of the Sun leads Doctor Catherine Tybalt, head of the research team, to press the captain to retrieve the object for further analysis. The interior of the artifact is hollow -- a void -- and should be incinerated, but it's perfectly intact. If they can discover what makes the object naturally resilient to the radiation of the Sun, perhaps it can be used for future development in stardiving. With a risky plan in place, Captain Markov reluctantly agrees. However, the artifact emits a strange radiation that affects not just the operational systems of the ship, but also the crew itself. Once the artifact is on board, research begins, and the scientists discover the terrifying secret of the void...but when they do, the fate of the ship may have already been sealed.

I really feel like it's a great time to be a writer. While independent publishing doesn't create the biggest or brightest of spotlights, word-of-mouth is insanely powerful, and when internet readers find something they love, they're a core, loyal set of fandom. It's not easy to self-promote and get an immediate foothold with sales, but it can be done, and I think that when the community of writers/readers comes together to discover new work and not just shill themselves for dollars, we can all benefit from the rewards of such.

I'm not sure if I'm quite accomplished enough to play, but to hell with that! I've spent several years writing screenplays. The one I got hired to write will never get made if there is any kind of supreme being. The entire premis was THAT bad. I've managed quarter finalist in competitions with three different works of my own. I'm currently doing re-writes on what will likely be my last feature for a while. When I got sick of writing things that would never go anywhere, I started writing comics. I have one 4 issue story with a buddy of mine to draw. We've only been talking about doing a comic together since middle school. Sadly... his life is keeping him otherwise occupied so progress is slow. I'm over 3/4 of the way through an 8 issue story arch for another comic. Once that's done, I'll put it onto a shelf until I find the right artist. My next project is 85-90% likely to be a novel. I've got the characters and setting and the basic plot. The rest is easy, right? Right? So nothing to shill here, but always happy to talk craft.

I am haunted by comics that I wrote for Yaoi Press when in need of money a few years back. They won't go away and have now popped up on Amazon in digital form.

I tend to write horror, sci-fi and fantasy short stories. The genre and nature of the story usually depends on my mood and I tend to like to get all my main ideas down in one go to give myself the kick to complete things. I've also planned out and written a few issues of a couple of different comic series that have hit dead-ends due to real life issues happening to the artists. Oh, and I entered a play for the Bruntwood prize last year because I was tired of it still staring at me after a few attempts at live productions fell apart the previous year.

Other than a couple of stories commissioned by friends as birthday presents I haven't had anything published to -The Public- due to my continued confusion over what distribution channel would best suit me and my own personal ignorance as to how to approach/where to look for outlets in the first place. Basically, I am my own obstacle. The continued search for a regular paying job also consumes most of my time at the moment due to having a family to feed. Still, if anyone has suggestions on good places to start sending shorts too for a bit of exposure/feedback and portfolio love, please feel free to shove me in the right direction as I'm determined to make my writing a main focus for 2012, what with the world ending and everything.

I write stuff. Last ten years have been (mostly) SF short stories, published free on the web, and slam poetry. I also publish other people's stuff online: I edit Weaponizer. We're soon to publish our second magazine. I also engage in random acts of music journalism for The Skinny and Shallow Rave. Once, I even got to interview Alan Moore.

Working on my first novel (third attempt at one) just now. No plans to tuck a shotgun under my chin in frustration... yet. ~~This~~ Last year I sold my first story, to a small press in the US. The anthology, a collection of positive post-apocalypse stories, can be purchased here.

I'm consistently blown away by the quality of writing by my Whitechapel contemporaries. Have the honour of web-publishing folk like Fauxhammer, City Creed, Cat Vincent and K. Patrick Glover, among many (many) others.... you guys have taught me so much. I basically owe any success I have as a writer to this forum. You inspiring, deranged, beautiful bastards.

Also: Si's novels rock my fucking world. 'Contract' ... is just so... holy fuck!

I write everything from press releases on pottery groups to reviews on custom bike shows to stories about chess playing bears.

I've been doing magazine work (Freelancing for BSH Custom Bike magazine, reviewing for Fortean Times) for a couple of years now. Started submitted my fiction just over a year ago. Since then I've had a fair few stories published by good folks like texture at Weaponizer, Rachel Kendall at Sein und Werden (Which is well worth checking out), Beautiful Scruffiness and Cafe Irreal. I've also won a couple of prizes, and have a story in the anthology put together by Steevo.

I tend to write stories that are mainly unsettling, whether crime, magical or mythic fiction. I'm working on a series of stories I hope to get published in a chapbook, based around hauntology and bedsits. One of the stories is here

I've been away from Whitechapel for a while, so this is actually an opportune spot to make my reappearance.

I've written various speculative short stories. Some of them I'm shopping around, others need some more polishing.

My first published work is a middle grade adventure novel I'm writing under the name M.E. Castle, called Popular Clone. I'm not a writer but I take every opportunity possible to pimp my wife's book. She writes character driven fantasy stories and her first novel Thieves at Heart has started to get some very positive attention. The second in the series will be out in another 2-3 months, she's just finishing up the final edits now. The whole story started as a character bio for an RPG campaign I was running. 3 years later she had thousands of pages of manuscript and she's now working with a professional editor to tidy the whole thing up and release about 4-5 books in the series.

I'm honestly a little surprised at the apparent lack of writers around these parts...

I've been a professional journalist for the last ten years or so, mostly technology, science, general journalism and some adult entertainment.

I'm currently working on the second draft of the first novel of my adult age. It did quite well in a local major scifi/fantasy novel competition arranged by a publishing house last summer, but not enough to be in the published top-2. I've written 1,5 novels when I was younger, but they'd require quite a lot of work to be publishable. My aim is to get the draft fit for a publisher rejection slip tour later this year. The story combines low key scifi with magical realism and surrealism.

On the short story front, I was one of the winners of Black Static magazine's Campaing for Real Fear, I got some flashfic out in Hilobrow's competition also, and of course the Whitechapel anthology Out of Place, Out of Time.

I'm also working on several interactive fiction projects (read: text adventures), that straddle the divide between game coding and creative writing.

Also, I'll have to say that the magnificent matriphiles of Whitechapel are responsible for rebooting my writing ambitions, this place is the best thing that's happened to my creative antics during my adult age.

Thanks guys, that means a lot. The positive feedback from Whitechapel is one of the main reasons I've kept writing. So much of what I write has been personal, (mostly stories people around me have heard a dozen times or more) and it's been hard to get legitimate feedback from those close by. I'm still writing, though I had slowed down a bit due to traumatic events, I'm back at it, today coincidentally, so thanks for the boot in the pants. I still don't know what I'm doing, but like Alanon, I just keep coming back.

Hullo.

Been a while since I dropped by these parts also as I've been moved out of the reach of high-speed broadband and into the country where I crack open a bottle of red wine everytime a 700meg download is done within 2 hours. The reason for the move is because I'm writing for Welsh National Opera's 9 Stories High project - yup, I'm currently writing opera libretti - and I grew up near the area where the project is so here I am back in the countryside.

I doubt I am the only one but I think I'm the first to write in this discussion that I'm foremost a playwright.

Saying that, I'd love to write comics and had my first idea for a good, original one just last week. All my other drafted comic books have either been terrible or the dream, i.e. writing for Hellblazer.

As it's a new idea, instead of writing that, this year I've started on the novel I've been thinking about & researching for the past 6 months.

When the videos are online for the Welsh National Opera thing, they should be fun so if anyone wants them posted on here, say so. If not, they'll be on my site where you can find what else I've published/produced/edited/made.

I run all my webcomics off my site but just got digital distribution with a company I'm not sure I can name yet. I also write Hannibal Goes to Rome over at Shadowline, and I wrote The Man's Book of the BBQ, published in the UK last spring and the US the following September.

These days I'm editing and writing a men's interest site (about to undertake revisions or I'd link you there) while doing some print work for Maxim and a column over at Cracked.

I have a graphic novel - White Tower - due from Committed Comics that will ideally see the light of day later this year. It's part of the now ubiquitous team-of-mismatched-occultists-with-near-future-gizmos/abilities-battling-Lovecrafian-nasties books.

Latest project is called Ultrasylvania - alt 19th century Europe with truly monstrous heads of state - and will see me working with about ten different artists. Look for a digital or web release in summer with a TPB in the fall. I plan to share more on this in the months ahead.

I've also authored a comic anthology - Worlds Apart - that's sold quite well at Wondercon, SDCC, and APE.

I've been writing in one medium or another for many years. Prior to entering comics, I made a couple no-budget digital features - that, at this point, I pray no one else ever sees. One turned up on IMDB.

I think you're kind of right, that it's a good time to be a home-cooking writer, but people going through traditional publishing might not agree.

I'm in a slump at the moment - the end of last year got pretty hairy irl, and I think my productivity has taken a hit - but there's a couple of comics written by me with homes - one in Stacey Whittle's imminent "Into The Woods", and another placed with Orangutan's FLT anthology.

One of the reasons I'm in a slump is I'm attempting to pull together a collection (or two) out of my work at Elephant Words - those are all here. It turns out I'm a bit too OCD to pick through the 150+ pieces, but I'm getting there.

Had a breakthrough this morning. Got some inspiration for my fifth bedsit story.

Also completed the first draft edit on my current short story. It's the first time I've printed out and pencil edited, but it has helped a lot, giving me a bit of clarity and overview I don't always get when I read off the screen. A very successful morning!

OK, had a good week last week.
I've decided to knuckle down and get my novel written. Up until now it's been an idea that I've played with in a couple of short stories. So last week I worked out how many words I need to nail a day to get 10,000 words out a week (About 1400). So this week has been habit building, and it seems to be paying off. I'm now 10,000 words further on than I was last week. I know that I'm going to have to slice through the draft like a psychotic barber, but that suits me just fine.

In other news my short story The Fibril Prosthetic is up at Inky Squib and one of my shorts from last year, 'Branch', has been selected from a longlist of 200 as one of the top 50 very short fictions by Wigleaf

I made a comic with Riley Rossmo (Dark Wolverine, Cowboy Ninja Viking, Green Wake) and I'm working on a few more with people like Ryan Sook, Ben Templesmith, Tyler Crook and so on. I hope that these gentlemen's willingness to work with me somehow means that maybe I know how to do this, at least partially. I'm doing my best to make comics that will be unlike anything else you've seen or read before.

The comic I made with Riley Rossmo, WILD CHILDREN, is coming out in July 2012 via Image Comics.

I'm Kody, I did a solo book called SWEETS: A NEW ORLEANS CRIME STORY from Image Comics.
It's on Amazon and ComiXology

Sweets was very well reviewed by just about everyone that reviews comics.

I'm also co-creator and artist on a highly unusual comic called PUNKS, which you can read for free over at MTV. This one is done entirely in traditional photo collage using an old photocopier, X-Acto blade, and scotch tape. Fun stuff.

I have an all-new crime comic in production, I'll probably show it around to publishers just before San Diego Comic-Con. There's also a slim chance I'll self publish as a digital original. Some decisions to make on this one.

This is actually a big step for me, to say "I Am A Writer" here...
(deep breath)

So, I mostly write on the Fortean beat. Yet another Weaponizer (my main thing there is the Mason Lang Film Club), I'm now a contributing editor at The Daily Grail (my most recent bit was a deeply-felt review of a truly shite book). I was also recently published in Real Proper Books - Darklore vol. 6 (with a piece on the Slenderman - free pdf available here) and the Modern Mythology compilation Apocalyptic Imaginary.

(I've also got a nice little earner doing an anonymous A-Z of Cannabis Terms for a noted Dutch seed company...)

And I still occasionally blog at my own joint & write more at Twitter than anywhere else - @catvincent, of course.

Future plans include the second Slenderman piece for Darklore 7, a possible collection of my articles on practical occultism known as Guttershaman... and who knows?

I wouldn't have dared to try my hand as a professional writer were it not for the support and nurturing of young artists & creators here - so thank you, one and all.

I've been writing comdey sketches and short stuff for ages but never did anything with it until now.
Pulled together my stuff and published it on Amazon 2 months and it's been doing pretty good.
The first is a blog-style teenage fantasy set in Stoke and the second is a series of interlinked comedy sketches copiously illustrated parodying the superhero world.

I co-edited Arcana studio's first Dark Horrors graphic novel anthology and had a short story inside it called "Bones." I think it's available on Comixology.

I did some ambient scriptwriting for the forthcoming Square-Enix/United Front Games open world Hong Kong action game called "Sleeping Dogs" (formerly True Crime: Hong Kong.) I don't know what, if anything made it into the final game, or if my name's in the credits, but it's a personal milestone for me because it was the first paid writing gig, and it's just nice to see it get released.

I contributed writing to some web series for friends of mine. I did punch-up writing for one called "Pretty in Geek" about a group of girl gamers, whose D&D game gets crashed by a LARPer. And I wrote a few episodes for another called "The Gate" which is a sketch-y type one about St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, and the shit he has to deal with. Again, for both, I don't know what's made it to the final, filmed projects, and I don't even know if they're released yet.

Had a bunch of things almost happen then get cancelled, as it goes. Got a few other things on the go, but can't talk about them yet. When I can talk about things, I talk about them here: http://jamesnadiger.com

I changed up my process on the story I'm working on now; instead of working from an outline, I just started free-associating. I hit a personal best as far as words-per-hour (as well as the number of instances of the word "handjob" for some reason), and I am really happy with the hallucinatory, subconscious feel of it. It's crazy and disjointed and it's a blast to work on.

I just hope it doesn't suck.

Think it's okay to announce this now. I just got a paid job as a Staff Writer for the paper I helped set up seven years ago. I'm also being mentored by a very experienced professional journalist and broadcaster, which is great. For the first time ever, after ten years of graft as a mostly unpaid blogger and journo, writing is paying my rent.

Also typed THE END on my novel, so that's the first draft done after 12 months of work. The funny side of all this is I'm going to be so goddamn busy now, I may as well hook up an IV drip from the internet into my veins. But as anyone who knows me will testify, I love to be busy. Looking forward to another year flashing past in this hyperactive, pell-mell dash towards the grave they call LIFE.

Gah! I'm writing a book on what is essentially Beer Appreciation 101. Covering common types of beer, brief run-down of how it's made, types of glasses, how to buy/order for yourself or others, brief run-down of pairing and blahdeblahblah...

Not planning on making it a definitive guide by any means, but I want it to be short, sweet and get other people on the road to appreciating beer better and looking deeper in to it if they want.

Getting a netbook today so I can write in the pub (something I've wanted for site business and travel things anyways).

@ Steve Toase - Thanks, man. It does indeed have a paranormal element to it. There's some freaky hallucinations ["n shit"] going down alongside the fact that it's essentially a trip through hell.

The timescale is that it should be available in roughly 3/4 months time.
Pretty quick, I think. I'll be sure to post more when I know. I'm thinking I'll blog the research I did that I didn't use in the run up to it so I'll be sure to gross you all out with some of that weird shit.

Good luck with the agents. I've found that they tend to take an age to respond.
So far, I've had no luck - I even got a one sentence 'no' reply the other week for the book that's now getting published.

I started STRANGITIES.com as a way to practice writing the only form of fiction I know how to - weird. I've since released one collection of short stories, "STRANGITIES: Volume I" in paperback and ebook with a second just about complete. I'm also a month or two away from releasing my first novella, "The Cold Year Of Creation." (Here's a teaser trailer.) A reader suggested I should join the community of Whitechapel as a way to meet like-minded individuals. So here I am.

I may be bending the rules on this somewhat, since this is not being traditionally published - if so, do forgive me.

I've started serializing my novel, The Last Suburb, on a dedicated Tumblr. I plan on getting a personal website up and running before too long, but I have just enough followers on Tumblr that it made sense to start there and see if I can build up a bit of readership. Whitechapel (without which a good chunk of this novel may not exist, for a variety of reasons) will also, naturally, get first crack at it. Because you're all awesome.

The novel itself has quite a lot (some might say too much already) written, at over 500 pages, but I'll be uploading one scene, between two and eight pages, once per day, until the book is finished. I suppose it works a bit less like a classic serialized novel, more like a daily webcomic, or a TV series.

I've got the first scene up and running now, plus an introduction and an epigraph page, so if you want something short to read, I would be more than happy to provide that.

Gosh I've been away from this place for too long.

It's wonderful to see what you're all doing.

I'm in Fusion Fragment this quarter, and next month in a little startup mag called Old Hedgy Times, which just dropped its first issue (recommended especially if you like chiptunes), and then another thing in March that's still a shhh moment. I might be joining Old Hedgy as a staff writer, also.

If anybody's interested in collaborating or publishing with Old Hedgy, I'm reachable by email and might be able to pull some strings. They pay.

A bit of publication news.
My short story, Chicken Skin Gloves, has just been published by Liquid Imagination. What's interesting for me is that they've also recorded an audio version. The recording is the first time I've heard someone I've never met narrate my work. Very pleased with how it turned out.

One of my other hats is as flash fiction editor for a magazine called Indigo Rising UK, our third issue is out, with a good mix of poetry, fiction and flash. There is some really good work from first time published writers.

I'm new but also a writer. I spent a while living entirely as a freelance writer, but I decided I wanted to move out of the ghetto and have health insurance. Plus the video game I spent months writing for got canned. Did some film reviews and piddling crap like that. Been writing comics, though and I finally got published for real! In Canada. In French. BUT STILL. So I mean, you can buy it in French published by a real publisher and it looks really nice... It's an accomplishment, I think? Next, I hope to be published in a language I actually speak!

On my front: the novel publication date got pushed back a little to avoid something or other, they tells me. Still out this year, I'm still happy.

Got some funding to do a new start-uppery writing thing so cracking on with that.

Well, no. Not really.

When it gets pushed back a little, I feel like momentum is put aside awhile when I'm attempting to push ever onward.
