As we said yesterday, something new.

Here's a story. It was written by me some time ago, in response to a challenge by Regie Rigby, and published in the first collection of stories.

Your challenge is to provide art: either a spot illustration or a two page adaptation. An easy one to start with; there's no dialogue in the story.

Title: Dancing to Silence
Word: articulated
Length: 200 words exactly

It was three o'clock in the morning and the moon cast its light over the almost deserted area that was formerly a drive-in movie theatre.

The stands which for so many years had broadcast the soundtrack of the motion picture playing were long gone, as was the screen upon which the visual images had appeared.

A pair of lights stabbed the darkness and the silence was disturbed by the arrival of a thirty tonne lorry.

The driver parked and, leaving his lights on but switching the engine off, he jumped from the cab. Brushing himself down, he lit a cigarette and waited. A few minutes later, another lorry, this one carrying twenty tonnes, arrived.

Over the next thirty minutes, fourteen more arrived, their drivers nodding in recognition at each other.

The oldest of them was fifty, the youngest just nineteen.

As the last of them arrived, the rest assumed their positions. The one who had arrived last set up the short wave transmitter and they all put on their bulky headphones.

And, in a darkness lit only by the glare of sixteen articulated lorries, and in what appeared to be perfect silence, the New Mexico Drivers' Ballroom Dancing team practiced.

(c) Lee Barnett, 2005

The Rules (edited)

You’ve got until evening on Saturday 21st January, say midnight British time, (4pm Pacific) to put up either a one panel spot illustration or a two page comic book depiction of the entire story. The art can be pencilled, inked, coloured, lettered... entirely up to you. But ART ONLY – no story ideas, or suggestions. This is an opportunity to showcase your art and storytelling abilities.

We’ll announce on Sunday 22nd January morning the winner who then gets to pick a new four word title and word, and I’ll write a new story which will go up Monday 23rd January at noon UK time... which will start the whole thing running again for the following two weeks.

Have fun!

Thank you, Rachæl - hadn't really considered photography; let's say that it's allowed if there's an element of creativity in addition to the photograph itself, i.e. you can use it as a background, or as part of the piece, but there must be illustrative art involved in the final creation...

But straight photography, no, sorry - don't think that'd be allowed any more than in the Remake/Remodel threads.

I've just got a lot on my plate this week, but the timeline may be a bit tight for most. If I hadn't had an unexpected dead evening, I wouldn't have been able to participate this week.

It's a tricky one, and some people may have been scared off by the thought of two pages (Hell, I copped out at one page). Don't be discouraged by a quiet start on this challenge, Lee. It's a great concept, just needs some time to find its legs. That and tricking all the other talented bastards on this forum to show what they got! Yeah, let's shame them into it, that ALWAYS works! : )

But I digress...

Sincere thanks from me and Si to everyone who read, spread the word and took part in this challenge.

Fair to say, I think, that while we knew the art submitted would be of high quality, the five pieces we got all blew us away. Like the R/R threads, it's a delight to see what people can do, and it's proved once again what a talented lot Whitechapel has as members.

Si's left the final choice to me, and it's this piece by @mojokingbee. I pretty much could have written the story almost word for word FROM the art, and while a spot illustration could easily have won, this one does it for me.

Every one of the art pieces put up deserve applause, folks. Thanks so much for taking part.

So, @mojokingbee - congrats and thank you; now I need a writing challenge from you for the next art challenge.

A four word title and a word to use in the story itself. Let 'er rip.
