It is just short of 24:00 on Jan Friday the 13th, 2012, and I have just heard a piece on the BBC about "hackerspaces*". At the end of the piece, the BBC journalists shot ping-pong balls all over the audience, and then exhorted us all to find a "hackerspace" near us, where we might partake in the communal knowledge and tools and all that would lead to such an outcome.

So let's have it - Hackerspaces, register here please. **

* As I understand it, a "hackerspace" is a (semi?)-communal workshop space, where those interested in electronics and physical manipulation of tools and materials can find a common place to gather and...hack.

** I live near MIT, so I'm sure I can probably get my needs met. However, I used to live in Kansas, so - please, think of the children.

There are several in Toronto. To be honest, I visited one for about a half-hour during one of their open nights, and found the space tiny and constricting, and the tool selection not much more expansive than the stuff I travel with. I'd rather work at home for free without having to put on pants.
That said, I'd be interested in workshops for specific skills, or the ability to rent something like a 3D printer or laser cutter for short terms. I just haven't had the need yet.

So, Toronto spaces, offhand:
http://hacklab.to/
http://site3.ca/
http://interaccess.org/
