The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

THE RULES:

-- This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.
-- No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. (Original photography is fine.)
-- No more than ONE submission by any one person.

INSTRUCTIONS:

PULPY LOVECRAFT

We’re going to do something even more different this week. As you know, one of the usual R/R stocks-in-trade is to take old pulp era characters and reinvent them for the modern reader. Instead we’re going to take some of the most famous pulp visuals ever, transplant them into an incongruous genre, and emerge with a brand new MAGAZINE COVER.

The Cthulhu Mythos is a shared fictional universe, based on the work of American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. The term was first coined by August Derleth, a contemporary correspondent of Lovecraft, who used the name of the creature Cthulhu – a central figure in Lovecraft literature[1] and the focus of Lovecraft's famous short story The Call of Cthulhu (first published in pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928) – to identify the system of lore employed by Lovecraft and his literary successors.

I shouldn’t need to say much about this, right? Lovecraft generated a huge collection of seemingly unrelated stories, in which disparate characters – mostly unaware of each other’s existence – each uncovered tiny hints of a vast reality-shaking occult conspiracy. The dedicated reader gradually built-up a picture of dark Elder gods, insane scholars, secretive cults, amphibious chimera-men and all the humourless po-faced adjective-crimes of a writer more in love with purple than an Imperial robe-maker. It’s the first ever Grand Crossover Event. (Crisis on Infinite Planes of Chlorotic Reality? Hrm.)
With a few arguable exceptions, the Cthulu mythos stories – if you had to genre-ise them – would probably fall under the category of… let’s say… “weird horror”, right?

So let’s have some fun. Pay attention:

Let’s assume Lovecraft got bored of being pigeon-holed. Let’s assume he wanted to continue to build his mythology – to hint at slumbering alien deities in extra-dimensional palaces of water and shadow; to suggest secretive communities of cultish adherents; to expound on fishmen and winged webbed beasties without description, and all the other over-the-top lexophanic silliness we all love so much… but to change his genre.

Western Pulp? Romance Pulp? Sci-Fi Pulp? Jungle-Adventure Pulp? Crime Noir Pulp? Beat-era Drugs-Are-Bad-Mmkay Reefer Madness Pulp?

So. You will produce a pulp fiction Magazine Cover featuring a lead-story by HP Lovecraft, in any genre except horror. If you’re looking for inspiration there’s a decent batch of pulp covers here, or just noodle about on Google for a while. The more overblown, moody, bosom-heaving, gun-toting, lip-trembling and swoon-inducing the better.

You’ll get extra kudos for all the usual pulp-magazine frills: header, story title, logline copy, etc.

Just, y’know. Have fun. With tentacles.

Tentacles? Must be a carryover from the sub-mariner challenge. I didn't do any tentacles then, but I'll need to work out how to incorporate them here. Still, I like the expansion of R/R beyond remaking old comic book characters.

@Salgood Sam: it might not be so cool with Daddy Si's maggots to have someone else jam on your inks etc. Probably something like "each entry must be the sole work of the entrant". I suggest you either jam on your own inks etc., or leave it as it is. Personally, I quite like it as it is.

No part of the rules say it has to be a good drawing. Don't compare yourself to the professional artists, and just give it a shot anyway. Or if you really can't even draw a recognizable stick figure, try the original photography route. Once again, it doesn't have to be great. It's fun to see the ideas anyway.

remove the space between "<" and "img" and it should work for you. It certainly did when I previewed it.

Darnit! I haven't been able to get time to sit down and do a quick horrible sketch of my idea, and I don't have access to a scanner at home today to post a quick thing, and today's the deadline. Ah well.

Well, the idea was just this: "Elder Deity Sentai: CTHULENGER!" Five Good Looking Japanese Friends From All Walks Of Life who each represent a different elder deity, drawing upon their power to save the children of Japan from various threats, teach valuable lessons in friendship, and form giant robots.
