The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

    Captain Future!

    THE RULES:

-- This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.
-- No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. (Original photography is fine.)
-- No more than ONE submission by any one person.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    CAPTAIN FUTURE!

Before anyone says so: Yes, I know Warren ran a R/R of this name a couple of years ago. Well just settle, petal: that thread revolved around the Nedor Comics Character Of The Same Name. We’re more interested in this fellow here.

    Quoth the ‘pedia:
Although sometimes mistakenly attributed to science fiction writer Edmond Hamilton, who indeed authored most of Captain Future stories, the character was created by Better Publications editor Mort Weisinger during the 1939 World Science Fiction Convention. The stories were published in the pulp magazines from 1940 to 1951. The adventures mostly appeared in Captain Future's own magazine but later stories appeared in Startling Stories.

And Quoth the mighty Jess Nevins:

Captain Future's adventures take place in the far-distant future of 1990. Roger Newton, his wife Elaine, and their best friend Simon Wright leave Earth for the Moon, where they establish an advanced laboratory. In this lab they create two artificial beings: Grag, a seven foot tall superstrong robot, and Otho, an android who "looked only half human...its arms and legs had a rubbery, boneless look. Its artificially created flesh was not pink like human flesh, but pure, dead white.” Unfortunately Simon is dying from an incurable disease and Roger is forced to remove his brain and put it in a plastic box. Grag, Otho, and the Brain become known as the Futuremen.

[The Newtons’ enemy] Kaslan eventually catches up with the trio, and the Newtons are killed. This leaves their infant son Curtis an orphan, but Grag, Otho and the Brain decide to raise him. He grows up to be Captain Future, a strapping six-foot-four, red-haired scientific genius with "space-bronzed" skin and two powerful fists.

NO, NO, NO, YOU DON’T GET BETTER THAN THAT.

I mean, okay, there’s all sorts of other stuff – Otho and Grag each have a silly pet and constantly bicker, a “Planet Police” lass called Joan Randall becomes Cap-Fu’s bit of crumpet, there’s a spherical rocket ship, a proton-pistol, a Magician Of Mars, etc etc etc – but you’ve got the bare bones of this beastie already.

Ass-kicking gun-master of ScienceJitsu, in the distant and unknowable decade of the nineteen nineties, forces his trio of unhappy Lab-Freaks into perilous situations for his own Science Gain. Probably while cracking-wise.

I want to emphasize the three roboty henchfreaks, please. Because Otho, Grag And The Brain, on names alone, are twice as interesting as yet another buckle-swashing Spacegit. Extra kudos may be awarded for deploying MIGHTY! PUNS! OF! SCIENCE!

    You have two weeks.

I love that picture of Cap's own magazine.

1990:It was a time when the rave scene was in full swing...the good, illegal ones. When people with eyes like saucers danced like robotic spastards to acid-house,shouting "MENTAL" every fifteen minutes after hugging nutters they'd normally not want anything to do with.

I can just see Otho,Grag and the Brain oozing foul, caustic robo-sweat on the dance-floor as a XTC-fuelled Captain Future makes a idiot of himself by threatening the DJ with his naff, plastic gun 'cos they refuse to play his new white label...it's really bad!

As always i look forward to the brilliance this thread produces.

Same line up as the shown cover pretty much.
I feel that every robot should have a heart...painted on their chest.

@ Tim Hamilton - Very slick designs!

Wow, I'm early this time around...

"Captain Future and his (mutinous) companions [from L to R]: the Organo-Technological Humanlike Organism O.T.H.O., the massive Galactic Robot - Silver 47 ("GRAg" for short), and finally the brains behind the Captain, The Brain! For Science!"

DBed I always like your work, but this has to be my favorite. I would love to see a weekly episode where the minions try to kill Capt Future while he is blissfully unaware in a Maxwell Smart/Zap Branagin (sp?) sort of way.

Captain Future and his Men of Science

I've tried to make it as 90s as possible.

@Horrible Warning Si--I've got to admit, your feedback made my week.
@SimonFraser--Love the smile on The Brain's "face".
@Tim Hamilton--I like how Future's human look offsets the design of Otho and Grag.
@DBed--I've always enjoyed your design and color schemes. Now I've got Thomas Dolby music in my head.

Hey! We're three synthetic beings! Let's raise a human child! Whatever could go wrong?

Seems like we could still cast Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Gutenberg for these roles.

I've tried to make it as 90s as possible.

You don't have NEARLY enough needless cross-hatching in your inking, Simon. : )

"we could still cast Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Gutenberg"
Yeah, but who'd play The Brain?
The mobile perched atop Simon is a great touch.
