One of my greatest aims is to make Whitechapel a nexus for Desirable Information.

Memes, virals, that which makes you laugh, that which makes your bowels weep; anything found or scavenged online which has no informative value: that stuff will continue to go in “Around The Net.” I’ll be updating that once every four weeks too.

This…? This is for everything else.

News Stories. Mad Science. Horrific Nature. Metaphysical madness.

Here is where we gorge ourselves on the creamy clostrum of Information. Here is where we nuzzle at the red-raw teat of the Up-To-Date Dataweb. Bring me the light of your Weird Wisdom and your New News.

(Anything of particular interest, go ahead and create new threads in this category to delve deeper.)

 @WorseThanDetroit

Well, yeah, however the FBI sheet strikes me as a list of indicators, similar to a profile of serial killers. Just because I happen to be a white male between the ages of 25 and 45 doesn't mean that I'm a serial killer. However, if other indicators pop up, somebody might want to check my house for bodies. In the same way, just because someone "likes privacy" that doesn't mean that they're a terrorist. However, if they're popping all or most of the behaviors on that sheet, it might be time to bring the bomb-detecting dogs around to give their garbage a few quiet sniff.

I will say that I like that the FBI sheet strongly emphasizes behavior over ethnicity.

That's more than one gone every minute.

Plus there's at least one buyer out there who went for option 8, and several who chipped in over $100. @Ben Gwalchmai - cool, but not so surprising. I mean, consider - they are using 3 of the exact same kind of plant. Figure that, as the plant doesn't actually have a nervous system, that if cutting it releases some kind of gas that trigger's it's own leaves to be exude a bit of toxicity, it makes sense that other, exact same kinds of plants in close proximity are going to be equally triggered by the same signal. It's not like the gas has any idea which specific plant it came out of, and the leaves have no way of knowing if the gas came from some other part of it's own root-fed entity.

The narrator is quite over the top in gosh-wow-gee breathlessness - but this really doesn't look like anything especially amazing or surprising to me. Certainly it doesn't look like anything I'd call "communication".

 For the record, I consider freediving to be crazy stuff, but then again, people have the right to be as crazy as they want as long as they endanger only voluntary participants.

"Behind him another diver resurfaces. “Breathe! Breathe!” a safety diver yells. The man’s face is blue, and he isn’t breathing. “Breathe!” another yells. Finally he coughs, jiggles his head, and makes a tiny squeaking sound like a dolphin.

For the next half-hour, as divers come and go, these scenes repeat. I stand in the sailboat with my stomach tightening, wondering if this is the norm—and if it is, how the hell any of it could be allowed. All the competitors sign waivers acknowledging that heart attacks, blackouts, oxygen toxicity, and drowning may be part of the price. But I have a feeling that competitive freediving’s continued existence has more to do with the fact that the local authorities don’t know what really goes on out here."

OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND YOU'RE DEAD

 Pooka:

It's sort of crazy, but so are most extreme sports. I remember how I got a huge shitfit when I saw my first free diver practicing. In this outdoor pool complex thing a couple of evenings are reserved for divers, and we were practicing something, when I suddenly noticed a guy lying totally limp in the bottom of the pool, wearing only swimming trunks and goggles. He looked totally dead and I didn't realize what was going on. It took me some time to get near him, certainly far longer than I could've held my breath, and just when I was about to go under and "rescue" him, he suddenly sprang into life and swam to the surface :P

One free diver died in a public swimming pool some time ago and apparently now most of the pools in Helsinki area forbid practicing it in their facilities.

I was contacted directly by the lead of Fox’s legal team, who explained my situation to me very clearly. He told me that I was technically in my legal right to use Isaac Asimov’s material. However, if I chose to proceed, they would file multiple lawsuits totaling over 2 million dollars against me. In the end, I might win, but it would take hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees just to fight it, but it would cost Fox nothing. It would be 10 years before any type of verdict could be levied, and by then it wouldn’t even matter."

 Although, you know, he sort of just gave up. I don't mean to the threat of legal trouble, either - he just gave up film, it seems, when it got hard.

I did a lot of live theater throughout college. In college, though I thought I was doing hard work, in reality it was very easy to push from one project to the next, surrounded by people self-selected for interest in that kind of thing, and in an environment constructed to assist me to succeed. When I got out of college, it was immediately very hard to keep that up. I pushed on 3 or 4 years before turning to other things.

This guy ran into his very first real world film industry problem and he just stopped. Worse, he blames it on everything else. Fox's threat made him not complete his thesis project. Without a thesis project, he couldn't get into a Grad School. And because of that, his film career was aborted.

Really?

He couldn't have taken some time off and gone back and done a new thesis project, then applied to grad schools? Somehow he was going to find the money to pay for a graduate film degree, but he couldn't work out paying off the 10K he sunk into his film? He'd have maybe had to work a year and go back to school later, but so many people do just that. Also, as far as that goes, did he really need to go to grad school?

You and I are both familiar with the fact that you do not need to go to a graduate program in film school in order to make movies.

I don't really have a lot of sympathy for his story. He would never have had a career in the real world in film. He just didn't have the perseverance in the face of real world obstacles, as opposed to a comparatively nurturing environment in school, that getting anything done in big art requires.

And he pretends that Fox ruined his career so he can feel self-righteous about pirating movies.

That's the impression that story gives me, at any rate.

Some grumpy guy gets pissed off at the government, and a criminal informant is used to hook him up with an undercover agent who actually provides the (non-functioning) explosives. When the suspect shows up at the intended target, cops swoop in and arrest the guy, parading him around like they just saved the day.

When in all actuality, the guy was harmless, and completely ineffectual. Without a CI or an undercover supplier, would the suspect have actually done anything at all? If anything, we could use our top-notch surveillance on these guys to lead us to actual black market suppliers of weapons or explosives, or possibly even real terrorist cells. Instead, we just get a grumpy nutjob and more security theatre, and make everyone "feel" safer.

Bush's administration did this several times, and now so is the current one. I wasn't impressed by it ten years ago, and I'm not impressed now.

The undercover cops went to classes, became Facebook friends and flirted with the other students. One 18-year-old honor student named Justin fell in love with an attractive 25-year-old undercover cop after spending weeks sharing stories about their lives, texting and flirting with each other.

One day she asked Justin if he smoked pot. Even though he didn't smoke marijuana, the love-struck teen promised to help find some for her. Every couple of days she would text him asking if he had the marijuana. Finally, Justin was able to get it to her. She tried to give him $25 for the marijuana and he said he didn't want the money -- he got it for her as a present.

A short while later, the police did a big sweep and arrest 31 students -- including Justin. Almost all were charged with selling a small amount of marijuana to the undercover cops. Now Justin has a felony hanging over his head.

 @mbakunin
It's ridiculous that the judge would throw out the case like that when it's pretty clear the guy was assaulted. That being said, it mentions in the guy's video that they're parading in the name of freedom of speech, however I really don't see how this is accomplishing anything. I mean, I tend to be somewhat 'anti-religion', but really I'm just anti-ignorance. This guy is just being an asshole about people's beliefs and then defending himself by claiming anyone against him is against free speech. This is exactly the kind of stuff that makes a lot of people hostile towards atheists. I suppose that's not really the issue at hand here though, so I digress.

They need to moderate their flow of pure evil if they're going to last. It took Labour over a decade to fuck things up this badly and they managed to counter it with a small amount of sense.
